I'm 62, and I've lived in my vehicle off and on for 18 years. Meeting people is the most rewarding part for me. Helping people is also rewarding. I spent 765 dollars yesterday helping a fellow nomad and his wife buy groceries, gas for their RV, and gas for their generator. In my apartment, I could never afford to do that. So now that I don't pay rent,, I help people, and I find that helping others as a nomad has made the road more like home to me.

@@gemini1123 Thank you. Helping people has come back to bless me. On July 30th, 2024, I parked under a tree at a hardware store in Laramie, Wyoming. Before leaving, I noticed my right, rear tire was flat. Soon after, an employee from the store came out with an air compressor and filled up my tire to help me find the leak. Then, two cowboys on bicycles came over and took the tire off and put on my spare tire for me. I knew I would have to pay 20 dollars to get my tire repaired. The next day at the tire repair shop, they fixed my tire and didn't charge me. I always try to help people in need. Because when I'm in need, I often need help too.

I had done my share of car camping, backpacking, and sleeping in cars over the years being an avid hiker. Getting to destination was fun but the living in my suv got tedious fast because I had to be super organized in such a small place. I spent the last 5 years contemplating and planning for van life but decided not to do it full time or to get a cargo van to convert. I’d continue to drive to places when I desire a getaway but I’d always have my home base to come back to (and indoor plumbing).

Im an economic migrant, or my romantic title, 21st century nomad. I'm 69. I lived in London for 51 years, then I left in 2004. I have a small pension but its cheaper for me to travel around the world sleeping in dorms in hostels than it is to live in England. And the Quality of my life has improved immeasurably. 14 years in Asia, one year in South America and the last 15 months in Spain, Portugal and Berlin.

I'm only 52 and have been watching countless videos over last two years ... money is always the issue because I am not old enough for even a small retirement check. So I am trying to figure out how to work from the road with bad knees, but it's killing me being trapped in town.

I'll offer another option....what I did, although when young, was to buy a dump of a house with friends. We lived in it and fixed it up as best we could. It was not what I would call enjoyable, but life isn't always perfect. The cost for me to get into that property was less than the price of a new van at the time (apples to apples). Over the first years all the other owners moved on and we took in renters. We sold the house as a rental property. With appreciation, the improvements we made, rent we had collected I got back my initial investment plus about 1/2 what a new van was selling for. I repeated this and eventually could buy homes on my own. I've saved a lifetime of rent and gained a lot on appreciation. It is hard work, not always pleasant. I've have moved several times to different states to buy what I could afford.
Look closely at the cost of living in van. Many of these "nomads" have made poor financial decisions their entire life and this is just one more. Living in a van is extremely expensive. Yup, initially it looks cheap. A person buys a used van and hits the road...set for life. Then the van breaks down. Almost by definition you're probably going to be in the middle of nowhere so a huge towing fee. You're not going to be able to shop around, you'll have to pay whatever the closest repair shop charges. Or you buy another used van. No refrigeration so food costs increase and probably you eat more processed food which adds to health issues. You have to drive to new places to camp, gas isn't free. Lot's of propane.
People look at nomadding as cheap because that's what they want it to be. Well living on the street is cheap. Vans and driving costs money. Some people do OK with a nomad life, but take a close look at them, they have some things in common...they're all pretty bright people, can figure things out, creative, healthy. That's their secret. But I see many videos like this one enticing people who don't have all these skills into the same lifestyle. "If I can do it you can too!" People don't like to face it but many people get into rough shape because of making poor choices their entire life. Van life will just be on more bad choice for many.

RUclips is filled with narcissistic people pretending to leave a cushy life and put on the vagabond shoes to make a quick buck off of youtube. I find their content extremely BORING. Who wants to sit around and watch a narcissist pretend to overcome something they can easily exit in a moment's notice? Or brag on their videos about how "they were somebody- pay attention!" People who have no other choice, the anonymous forgotten people, they are facing the very human struggle to survive and thrive in circumstances which the rest of society views as failure and defeat. For those people it is a life and death struggle. For narcissists meh not so much. If the people who claim to have left "in their prime" to find something meaningful, then that in and of itself should be reward enough rather than seeking attention on youtube.

Carolyn, I think people feel it’s easier for a younger person to pick up and go than a 60 yr old. In your 30’s or 40’s you have energy, determination and can have ambitious dreams. Over 60 is seen as you’re preparing to die. So, when an older person chooses this lifestyle it seems overly ambitious. And, friends and relatives see it as you’re headed for failure because “you’re old why are you doing this?”

A lot of people don't realize that being a Nomad, means you are camping out the rest of your life in whatever vehicle you own. Think about that. Most people have camped very little in there life. That would be your only option. Most videos highlight the glamour of the lifestyle, beautiful beaches, forever sunsets and cuddling couples over a glass of wine. That is not the reality. Yes it happens on occasion, but real life goes on the rest of the time. Being stuck in a car, van, camper all winter long in the desert of Arizona with high winds blowing is reality. It's like being in a gravel parking lot .Encouraging older people on social security to leave their homes and take up being a Nomad and all their problems will be solved is not being truthful. If you have financial problems now, they will only increase.

I'll tell you why. Because she has the maturity and intelligence of a 10 year old. She childishly left her home and husband and no reason is given other than she just wanted to. But before leaving did she know anything about camping outside or living out of a vehicle? You can practice and learn and try it out in short trips a few days at a time before going from 0-100 with zero experience. Anyone with even one iota of common sense would understand that simple fact without having to be told. And if she doesn't have enough money to buy an old minivan (like they gave her) and outfit it herself according to her needs that she discovers on short trips beforehand, then she won't have enough money to keep herself afloat on the road. Staying on the road isn't cheap, contrary to the fantasies out there.
Also, her physical condition is that of an 80 year old. She doesn't have the stamina or know how to live that lifestyle (or money, I'm sure). She has abused her mind and body with a lifetime of smoking and drugs and alcohol. I'm almost her age and I know the score. I used to smoke and drink too much, but I quit over 20 years ago. So did many of my friends. Everyone knew and knows what it leads to. You're the custodian of your body and mind. Some people accept that responsibility, others (like this lady) just shrug it off and think the day of reckoning will never come. Well, it comes. All in all, this lady is a big baby that has made a lifetime of foolish decisions, and society (taxpayers) will have to carry her weight instead of her living a self sufficient life in a van or any other way.
