Africans first dealt with the Eurasian (Hyksos, Assyrians, Persians) then the Greeks and Romans. The first meeting between Portuguese explorers and King Nzinga a Nkuwu of the Kingdom of Kongo was in 1482. The Kongo Kingdom was founded by Lukeni lua Nimi about 1300.The arrival of the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1498 signaled a new era of foreign rule on the Swahili Coast. Unless she shows a deep interest in wanting to learn Kiswahili, Kenyans will always communicate with her in English. So when you come, make it clear to Kenyans that you have an interest in learning Kiswahili. 3. Majority of Kenyans know Kiswahili but it is mostly in the suburbs that the language is widely used.
