to be honest, midoryia is such a great character for the lov. if only he was a villain after he obtained one for all. I'd take a good guess that he'd be acting to catch everyone off guard. especially katsuki. if anything, he'd be the next deadly character ( if not the most ). i think midoryia has this tactic of surreal acting, that he genuinely makes himself believe he wanted to be a hero. But in the end, he was always the trickster and fooled himself into denial.
he'd see himself as a hero, but he knew deep down that he always was the final boss. the enemy that will take you down and force you to quit.

the force of the knife could also be why it goes in a straight line.
Of course, it'll slow down at some point, but in this case the spy must've been far from them for the knife to actually slow down and lower to his under-leg. Otherwise it wouldn't have made sense for the knife to reach his under-leg if Izuku threw it in a straight way.
