- Passenger train strikes truck; crash victims are 2 adults, boy. Three people were killed in a crash that involved a pickup truck and a passenger train Friday night in North Tonawanda.
those bars are designed on purpose so you CAN just drive through them, they aren't that strong
True. I've seen it happen once.
Please tell the driving world this
Little known fact. Don't stop drive
Through the crossing bar it's only
Cheap wood.
I didn't know that. Thank you for the information
But if I drive through them I might get a scratch on my precious car😆😵😵😵
@@jeffharper7579 no, its, wuhat do i do now ?! Somebody come tell me what to do..
First off, never stop in traffic on the tracks. 2nd, those gates can be crashed through in an emergency.
3rd get out of the vehicle!
Please , anyone in this situation , just get out of the car and out of the way
People don't want to leave their cars. They were dumb, more air for us.
A railroader’s worst nightmare…
Exactly . My late Brother in law,,CSX 40 yrs. Never hit a car but lived in dread of it. Many of his fellow engineers did. And never returned after a deadly accident.
@@alphaomega5909 I drive a city bus. A coworker (and buddy) was driving down a hill the day after Christmas, a driver in the oncoming lane crossed 3 lanes of traffic and hit him head on. Their passenger was ejected and killed against his windshield.
He's still being paid to come to work, but due to his psychological injury cannot drive.
I know a engineer that’s still haunted by people hurt and kill at grade crossings accidents.
@@lawnmowerdude Most take retirement.
I've only heard stories so far... one incident, a man unalived himself. But they forced the engineer to yard the train. And didn't even hose it down fro the next crew. "Brain matter" was on the plow and stairs. The crew left out the rear door. Another engineer hit three kids on a bridge. So they added horns to those five bridges now.
No, it was not "stuck" between the bars. Go THROUGH the bars, don't waste time trying to gently get around them. They're rather flimsy and will break.
"Truck stops in path of train. Consequences as expected." The train did not swerve uncontrollably and accidentally hit the truck as your title would imply. Stop blaming trains for idiots that stop on tracks or try to beat the train.
This was not some idiot trying to beat the train , this was a family who were stopped due to the lane being blocked by the first incident and the lack of safety and negligence of EMS on scene by not directing traffic around a very dangerous scene during an incident . This driver and his family were murdered by the communities authorities in cold blood .
@@timc333 No. If you cannot safely proceed all the way through an intersection then you are not allowed to enter that intersection regardless of what the traffic signals are telling you. This also applies to train crossings. Go to the DMV and pick up one of their learner permit books.
Watch your fuckin mouth if that was your family yhu wouldnt b saying that same shyt it was a regular road they were blocked off due to multiple vehicles and they panicked they also had my 6 year old nephew so it wouldve been a bit harder to just get everyone out nd run.
@@Sidicas I liked the insult at the end , that was cute , but had you not felt the need to be a dick , I could have told you that I agree with you , I simply never ever stop in the middle of level crossings , how ever things can happen causing a person to be caught in the middle of a crossing , some people panic in that situation . I was an EMT and I subscribe to " Life over Limb and Law " Life is paramount so in loosing a lime saves a life then it must be and I have no problem being alive to talk to a judge . Yet the emergency personnel on the original incident should have secured the scene so as to prevent this and that is my point . again I loved the insult , but man I get much more vicious myself sometimes , it was like getting hit with a loofa .
@@timc333 There is no insult. It's just when I correct people online about their terrible driving they get all upset saying there is nowhere it is written that it says those things that would have saved peoples lives if they were followed, so now I automatically tell them where it's written to avoid that back and forth. It's in the little book you get when you apply for a learners permit. I still have mine from when I got it 27 years ago and apparently I still need to pull it off the shelf from time to time to inform others to be better, more safe drivers...They're free at the DMV.
Those horns sound well before the bars come down.
The only asterisk to that is my trains begin the horn when the gate is half down. We're only going about 35 though, so that puts us 20 seconds from the crossing. For any train, if you hear the horn, you have 15-20 seconds to get the fudge out of our way.
People need to look both left and right before crossing any railroad tracks even when no train is present and signals are NOT in motion. These RxR signals can fail at times. The life you save may be yours and that of loved ones.
1/4 of a mile from the whistle post
A lot of places don't let the trains blow their horns anymore. I honestly miss the sound of it, especially at night.
There are even red lights flashing and bars coming down! 😉
If only trains were bigger, louder, easier to see...
and only confined to certain locations, like "tracks" or something. they are so dangerous being able to go anywhere, and with no warnings whatsoever!
If only people were smarter, wiser and had much better insight in all situations.
If only people knew the road rules better. You are not supposed to attempt to cross over the train tracks unless you can safely clear the crossing when you reach the other side.
😂 right ?
I just learned they don't even have steering wheels. the fuck?
Poor family. Sure have to feel for the locomotive crew and first responders too.
Darwinism at its best.
Go through the crossing arms people. Doing little damage is better than getting hit by a train.
NEWS STATIONS: Please put your city/state in your title, and in stories, put the same. It's ridiculous that I have to google where the hell tonawanda is. Get professional, jeez.
Don’t tell news stations how to do their stories and stuff. Why don’t you do it yourself other than that just shut up
Honestly I feel like you are reaching its not that hard
thank you! public should have basic information
If you just click on the station logo right underneath the video, it will take you to the station's RUclips main page, where they DO tell you what city/state they are in. It's so much faster and easier than looking it up on Google.
@@christopherjackson2629Thanks, moron.
Who in their right mind would stop the car or truck on the railroad track
Man thats messed up ! They paniced they could have just gotten out of the truck .sad
the stupidity of humans has gone to really dangerous levels.
Grandma and Grandpa with grandson. Very sad and avoidable.
As a car carrier in N.J. I was told many times, "Don't ever shift gears while crossing the tracks"!
ALWAYS STAY CLEAR OF THE TRACKS AND GATES even if they aren’t down or activated! You never know when A train will arrive. I see drivers all the time stop on tracks or between the gates when no train is around! DONT DO IT! Always assume a train is nearby. Complacency and lack of attention to safety is to blame.
Simple rule is NEVER stop on the crossing.
STOP, LOOK, LISTEN AND LIVE
I imagine it might have been a grandchild with them.....when you've got kids with you, you can not take any chances at all.......having said that, once I was on a road when the swing bars came down right after I was thru...I stopped and just waited...for me there was plenty of room....
Rip to the victims...sad all around.
Heartbreaking
Back in the last century when schools provided drivers education as a class one of the points driven into us was never stop on a railroad track for any reason. If there is a line of cars on the other side, stop at least two car lengths from the tracks. I was driving out west in a sparse little town and saw a fast freight train derail at a crossing and take out the first four autos in line. Now I always stop back at the pavement painted crossing markers or about 5 car lengths from the crossing and turn on my four ways. Lot of people honk or just go around, I pay them no attention.
Exactly....the person driving this vehicle was old enough to KNOW better than to stop on a track. No one else is at fault. People need to stop attempting to pass BLAME on someone else.
Any time is train time - don't proceed unless the way is clear
I hauled HAZMAT, liquid oxygen and bulk CO2 for 12 years. Still to this day O slow down at RR crossings by habit even though I am not required to fully stop and use the four way flasher's.
Never stop on the tracks. I really feel sorry for the locomotive crew, they have to live with this for the rest of their lives
I live next to a series of tracks, and those trains are gigantic, heavily loaded... FAST, takes 5 minutes to stop one.
RIP 🌷🌷🌷
NEVER STOP ON TRACKS EVEN IF YOU DONT SEE TRAIN. Why don’t people know this ? So tragic
Its 2024 and people are still getting hit by trains...
Well there are tons of morons in the USA, duh
Sincere Condolences to those lost and impacted by this tragedy. I hope we can all learn from this.
As a driver, you should be looking beyond the tracks before you even start to cross them. If there is an obstruction preventing you from clearing the tracks, do not pass the RR Crossing signal, even if the gates are not activated. It is also the law not to stop on railroad tracks (NY Vehicle & Traffic (VAT) CHAPTER 71, TITLE 7, ARTICLE 32, Section 1202 (h)).
I know, in this case, that is a sharp right turn, but there is still a full car length prior to entering the crossing to make that quick assessment. This is the driver's responsibility. These accidents are totally preventable.
You are NEVER stuck between the bars. Drive through the damn things, that's how they are made. I feel for the six year old.
We really need to make it a mandatory DMV written test so people know that 1) the train track arms detach easily because they're meant to be a visual signal, not a physical barrier; 2) any legal and financial ramification from going thru the bars, are way better than dying.
I’m very angry about this I’m a train fan and a train watcher here in North Tonawanda and I believe I saw this Amtrak pass and they waved at me when they passed through I feel bad for the people who are killed and the train crew this was Friday evening on my birthday the 17th
Considering that this would most likely not have happened if the authorities on scene of the first incident would have notified the railroad informing them they were conducting activity near or on railroad property , the railroad would have limited the speed through the scene to increase safety , they were sitting ducks , just like the driver and his family , they were murdered . The negligence of Emergency Management and the complete lack of situational awareness of the community leaders and failure of emergency services caused this , and they murdered three people and went home and eat their dinner and went to bed and slept like babies after killing someone's babies .
Why didn't police block/ stop peolpe from making that turn if the road was blocked and they could be stuck on the tracks ?
The bars break away just for this reason. Risk your life by stopping on tracks? Then risk your life because you're afraid to drive through the bars? I'm just stumped. People have lost common sense.
The last few amtrack crashes this year were drivers not obeying traffic guards ! Sad ! 😥
This one happened because the authorities blocked the lane of travel at a level crossing , and did nothing to mitigate the very dangerous conditions they caused . They needed to have traffic control and yet somehow had none . this driver was murdered along with his family by the Town Mayor and his henchmen .
@@timc333 Was getting out of the truck impossible? This feel like a darwin award.
@@ghost_stars2307I mean they did have time to try and go around the RR bar. Instead right through it
@@R3al3yesRealizeRealLies Sure, what i meant is if all else failed, there was still the option of simply leaving the danger zone on foot.
@@ghost_stars2307 First I couldn't know what was going through the driver or his family's head as I never in my life encountered this , see I simply under no circumstances ever stop on train tracks . Yes I was behind a state trooper at a traffic light in heavy traffic with train tracks close to the intersection , the cars in front of the trooper got a red light I ended up in the middle of the crossing , so I pulled up on the right hand side next to the trooper , he got mad rolled down his passenger window and asked what the hell I was doing , when I told him , he smiled and said drive safely . But some people do get confused as to what to do simply because they want to follow the laws right . I don't care about law if my life could be in danger , I have no problem being alive talking to a judge . Been there many times , talking to judges that is , hahaha lol. The Police on scene should have directed traffic in this case , just saying they were at a stationary incident they should have secured their original scene , but failed to do so . Making them Guilty of gross negligence .
Being from NT my dad always told us to hit the gas or get out the vehicle and run away from it. The car can be replaced. You can not.
Never NEVER stop on a train track. It's NOT AMTRAK'S fault.
Stop, look and listen!
Prayers to the family and the train crew the train crew is the ones that really suffer there are helpless when you see a car on the tracks and you can't stop.
RIP lil one! RIP adults. I am in no way blaming the RR those imagine what the engineer must feel!!!
Oh my God, the grandparents were stupid. They should have gotten out of the vehicle taking that kid out, but they did not and they murdered that kid.
I would not let a bar keep me on a track with a train coming!!
Condolences to any living family members and friends. So sorry for your loss. 😢
What we need to realize that it’s not the fault of the train when a car or bus or other vehicle gets hit by a train. (Besides driver education) There are crossing signs and signals as well as the train horn. We also hope there’s a bit of common sense. The right decision for these people would’ve been to get out of the truck immediately and get out of the train's way. They did not need to go down with the ship so to speak. In all cases of a train vehicle accident, the driver of the vehicle is primarily at fault. It’s sad what happened. They could’ve hit the gas pedal and backed up through the barriers. The could have gone around the barriers if they’re the right kind. The drivers didn’t seem to be that old.
Some years ago there was a Darwin event with a cheerleader in Colorado. Her car stalled and was stuck on the tracks. Her boyfriend tried to push the car off the tracks. She had plenty of time to get out of the car. And yet the car remained on the tracks only to be hit by a Coal train. she suffered serious injuries. Luckily she survived. Her family sued the railroad and made out pretty well due to public sympathy.
It's never the fault of the train. The train has the right of way. Car's are always at fault. General public does not realize this. Never stop on tracks, you have no idea when a train is coming.

😂😂
North Tonawanda, NY.
Trains always win vs cars and trucks! Don’t take chances!
Did it sneak up on them?
Yes. It was one of those new ninja trains.
Cops could have directed traffic safely through the crossing to prevent tragedy!
You don't cross tracks if you can't get clear on the other side. Sad for the families of those lost but simple rules are there to keep you simply safe. Disregard those rules at your own discretion and you may pay an awful price for doing so.
heartbreaking to lose your parents and your child all at once. i wish there was more education on driving through the bars and not just signs saying to look both ways.
I love these stories
RIP dear people. 😢
Well dang, if only trains could steer and swerve out of the way of vehicles...
Blaming the train? It is like blaming a tree.
I pray for those people who lost their lives, but I'm sorry, this was caused by stupidity of the driver. You're in that situation you FLOOR it through those arms, which are designed to break to avoid what just happened. Common sense is greatly missing in the world today, & it would have saved these people's lives. God Bless 🙏🙏🙏

The old man panicked
That's basically it. And no situational awareness.
Horrible. Just terrible. I understand it's not easy to figure out what to do in a situation like this, but seriously, why stay IN the vehicle? Condolences to the family and loved ones.
he wont do that again
trains are so awesome
The Gates not Bars are built to break away in just such circumstance !
It’s simple stay off the tracks
HORRIFIC :(
OMG !!!! Why didn't they just get out of the truck and leave it sitting there. ? My condolences to their family and friends.
Sounds to me like the authorities there screwed up big time , they had a lane blocked at a level train track crossing with a different incident and did nothing to mitigate the very real danger from the train . They had not informed the railroad that they were conducting activity there which would have caused the railroad to limit the train speed through the scene . They did nothing to prevent the confusion of the killed driver by directing traffic safely around a very dangerous scene . Public safety being very publicly unsafe again . Ever in an unsafe position , ignore orders to stay there , get out of the unsafe situation with any means , live to talk about it later . I'd rather talk about the illegal order with the cop who gave that order than have that same cop zip up the body bag .
Yes, why didn't police block/ stop peolpe from making that turn if the road was blocked and they could be stuck on the tracks ?
Common sense is not very common anymore. Those thin wood bars are no match for a truck with the pedal to the metal.
Rest in peace
Virtually all crossing grade accidents are caused by motorists doing dumb things. The psychological impact on the poor train crew who had to watch helplessly unable to stop is often profound, especially when a family gets killed. A car might weigh 2000 lbs, one ton. A train might weigh thousands of tons and it's in motion, needing a mile to stop. It's simple physics as to what happens during a collision. Very sad.
They have numbers on crossing guards to call and shut down trains. Get out and run.
🙏
Common sense not common
oooh... so it was stupidity that killed them..... not the train..

Was the driver always licensed to drive in the United States? Was the driver able to read English? A lot of these fatalities happen because foreigners coming from a different country they're Road set up is completely different, and should not be allowed to drive on American roadways unless they can read and comprehend every single road sign. Little pictures on the signs obviously isn't good enough
