"Brain matter" was on the plow and stairs. The crew left out the rear door. Another engineer hit three kids on a bridge. So they added horns to those five bridges now.

This was not some idiot trying to beat the train , this was a family who were stopped due to the lane being blocked by the first incident and the lack of safety and negligence of EMS on scene by not directing traffic around a very dangerous scene during an incident . Back in the last century when schools provided drivers education as a class one of the points driven into us was never stop on a railroad track for any reason. If there is a line of cars on the other side, stop at least two car lengths from the tracks. I was driving out west in a sparse little town and saw a fast freight train derail at a crossing and take out the first four autos in line. Now I always stop back at the pavement painted crossing markers or about 5 car lengths from the crossing and turn on my four ways. Lot of people honk or just go around, I pay them no attention.

Sincere Condolences to those lost and impacted by this tragedy. I hope we can all learn from this.
As a driver, you should be looking beyond the tracks before you even start to cross them. If there is an obstruction preventing you from clearing the tracks, do not pass the RR Crossing signal, even if the gates are not activated. It is also the law not to stop on railroad tracks (NY Vehicle & Traffic (VAT) CHAPTER 71, TITLE 7, ARTICLE 32, Section 1202 (h)).
I know, in this case, that is a sharp right turn, but there is still a full car length prior to entering the crossing to make that quick assessment. This is the driver's responsibility. These accidents are totally preventable.

The negligence of Emergency Management and the complete lack of situational awareness of the community leaders and failure of emergency services caused this , and they murdered three people and went home and eat their dinner and went to bed and slept like babies after killing someone's babies .

What we need to realize that it’s not the fault of the train when a car or bus or other vehicle gets hit by a train. (Besides driver education) There are crossing signs and signals as well as the train horn. We also hope there’s a bit of common sense. The right decision for these people would’ve been to get out of the truck immediately and get out of the train's way. They did not need to go down with the ship so to speak. In all cases of a train vehicle accident, the driver of the vehicle is primarily at fault. It’s sad what happened. They could’ve hit the gas pedal and backed up through the barriers. The could have gone around the barriers if they’re the right kind. The drivers didn’t seem to be that old.
Some years ago there was a Darwin event with a cheerleader in Colorado. Her car stalled and was stuck on the tracks. Her boyfriend tried to push the car off the tracks. She had plenty of time to get out of the car. And yet the car remained on the tracks only to be hit by a Coal train. she suffered serious injuries. Luckily she survived. Her family sued the railroad and made out pretty well due to public sympathy.

Sounds to me like the authorities there screwed up big time , they had a lane blocked at a level train track crossing with a different incident and did nothing to mitigate the very real danger from the train . They had not informed the railroad that they were conducting activity there which would have caused the railroad to limit the train speed through the scene . They did nothing to prevent the confusion of the killed driver by directing traffic safely around a very dangerous scene . Public safety being very publicly unsafe again . Ever in an unsafe position , ignore orders to stay there , get out of the unsafe situation with any means , live to talk about it later . I'd rather talk about the illegal order with the cop who gave that order than have that same cop zip up the body bag .

Virtually all crossing grade accidents are caused by motorists doing dumb things. The psychological impact on the poor train crew who had to watch helplessly unable to stop is often profound, especially when a family gets killed. A car might weigh 2000 lbs, one ton. A train might weigh thousands of tons and it's in motion, needing a mile to stop. It's simple physics as to what happens during a collision. Very sad.

Was the driver always licensed to drive in the United States? Was the driver able to read English? A lot of these fatalities happen because foreigners coming from a different country they're Road set up is completely different, and should not be allowed to drive on American roadways unless they can read and comprehend every single road sign. Little pictures on the signs obviously isn't good enough
