  • A flare system is an arrangement of piping and specialized equipment that. collects hydrocarbon releases from relief valves, blowdown valves, pressure. control valves and manual vents and disposes of them by creating safe carbon dioxide and water vapor through combustion
Flares are important safety devices used in refineries and petrochemical facilities. They safely burn excess hydrocarbon gases which cannot be recovered or recycled.
A flare system generally consists of an elevated stack, means to maintain burning conditions at the top of stack, and means to prevent flashback within the system.
Flaring is an essential part of the LNG production process, ensuring the conversion of natural gas to liquid is carried out safely. During flaring, methane is broken down into water vapour and carbon dioxide, which has just 1/25th the greenhouse impact as releasing unburnt gas.
Flaring is appropriate for continuous, batch, and variable flow vent stream applications, but the primary use is that of a safety device used to control a large volume of pollutant resulting from upset conditions. Flares find their primary application in the petroleum and petrochemical industries.
The advantages for flaring are: Economically advantage to treat large quantities of solvent loaded gases. Normally no support of fuel is necessary to obtain good combustion. Good for strongly fluctuating or periodic emissions.
There are four major types of flaring tools: manual, hydraulic, single flare, and double flare. Single flaring tools are better for lower-pressure repairs like coolant or fuel lines. Because of the high pressure associated with brake lines, no one performing car repairs should choose a single flare for this job.
By watching this video, you will have a clear understanding on definition of flare system, design requirements, Constructional details and application of various flare system using in oil and gas industry.
