    I'm loving these videos man. They're exactly the type of thing I've been looking for -- the game is an amazing spectacle even without tactics and such, but battlefield formations and the like were sort of intimidating to break into. These make the process very digestible. Really interesting to learn some tidbits of real life application as well!
    Do you have any tips when it comes to setting up a good ambush deployment? Mine tend to devolve into chaos pretty quickly.

For ambushes I generally try and hit both ends of their column, moving infantry to block off the head of the column from escaping and cavalry at the rear to take out their missiles and artillery. It’s dependant on the terrain but I put archers on the sides to bombard them and concentrate fire on individual units

    I hoped for a bit more actual battle examples, like you did with the tercio and the dutch formation. In theory I know what to do with cavalry and I think I do reasonbly well with it, but I can't help but think that cavalry are the most depended on player skill and I believe you can achieve the near impossible when used to the maximum.

    pro tip for range cav: if they can shoot in every angle (circle range) you dont need to turn them to the enemy you can just keep ride away from them and keep shoot even if they are turned in the oppose direction so when you move them you can earn many valuable time wasted in useless positioning

    Hey malleus, ive been playing a lot of bretonnia recently and have a few more broad scale "formations" for cavalry.
    The first is a kind of early game cavalry tercio i used with peasant horsemen and archers. I noticed my horsr archers getting engaged a lot so i gave them an escort of spear cavalry, which interdict the enemy cavalry and allow the archers to flank and fire or charge. I also used this well with knights and auxillary outriders.
    Second, for an all cavalry force i like to use a frontline of questing knights, for which you can apply most infantry tactics to. A small sauad of shock cavalry paired with defensive cavalry can bring a mobile hammer a d anvil anywhere on the battle field.
    In particular when fighting with an all cavalry army, i like to use one echelon with a wedge tip to drive into the enemy centre. The echelon on the wing holds half the enemy line while the remainder of your troops achive local superiority on the open side. You basically use questing shock cavalry as the tip to peice the line, deliver an echelon across their line like an X, and then hold with echelon force while the shock cavalry and anything you had behinf now encircle one half of the enemy army.

      @MalleusGaming57  11 месяцев назад +2

      Omg... Cavalry Tercio... CAVALRY TERCIO!!!
      Haha bro this is amazing! I'm gonna try these all out I've been wanting to do a proper Bretonnian playthrough lately! What do you do when you come across a lot of anti-cav units?

    • @bugcatcherben4741
      @bugcatcherben4741 11 месяцев назад

      Hahah give it a shot! Brets definitely isn't the best faction for a cav tercio, but its the best way I've found to use their peasant cavalry. It works well with Empire Outriders though, I really hope we get some more ranged cav in the future!
      It really depends on what the specific unit is, but usually the strategy is just overwhelming if I am going an all cavalry army. Halberd Infantry and the like I'll usually use the false charge tactic you display here. Or I'll just make them the first target for my hammer once the anvil hits. The "wedge-tipped Echelon" ensures you get local numerical superiority on one half of the battlefield so as long as the echelon can screen the anti cav on the other half for long enough for you to come around you'll be able to swam them. THAT SAID, it's usually more reasonable to just have a couple of Foot Squires or auxillary units from another faction. In an all-cavalry army I've been leveraging alliances to get outriders with handguns or grenade launchers to deal with things like anti-cav infantry. But I've only really been going 100% cav in the later game, earlier on they are the first targets for artillery or Squire-chow. Happy to draw you some diagrams if I'm not doing a good job of explaining what I mean.

    generaly speaking i use heavy cavalry to break apart enemy formations and make them vulnerable to more cavalry or make it easier for the infantry , and light cavalry only exists for pursuit after the fighting is over , either i attack from the front or from the side , rear charges make the battles too easy i play a battle to fight not to see my enemy fall over with no risk to myself

      @@MalleusGaming57 flexible yes but the way CA designs ˝˝˝˝shock cavalry˝˝˝ is very weird i mean knights errant and knights of the realm wear litteraly the same armour (actually now that i think of it most of their knight units do) getting bogged down in melee shouldnt be a problem for such heavy knights but i guess thats game balance lol , the only weird unit in this regard is reiksguard who can for no apparent reason stand and fight spearmen

  • @Supercohboy
    @Supercohboy Год назад +2

    2:15 based on what I've read online, attacks that send an enemy flying do almost no damage and are generally *beneficial* to that unit's survivability. It does throw them out of position, however, which can be used to your advantage I suppose, but you usually don't send enough of the unit flying to relocate and entire group backwards.
    Online sources state that the weapon hitbox hitting a unit hitbox is what causes the big damage numbers. Slinging enemies around is mostly worthless, unfortunately.
    Side note, why the fuck are cavalry so horrible to control still? Are there any QoL mods out there that make them less of a bitch to use? Every other unit in the game is right-click and done. Cavalry gets stuck on EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME and IGNORES YOUR FUCKING MOVE ORDERS consistently. I shouldn't have to fight the controls as some sort of "added realism" or whatever. A key goal of any RTS dev should be to make all units around the same "comfort level" to use, with heavy-micro unit types being the exception but still actually function properly.
    This is what, the 25th Total War game ever? They should have this down by now...
    Edit: After trying the High Elf cavalry, I've come to realize that it's larger cavalry units that are so difficult to maneuver. I'd say that's fair if their larger size didn't make them unrealistically prone to getting 'hooked' on blobs of units as well. Certain outlier units seem to be affected more than others, like the Kislev Snow Leopard.
    All cavalry tend to get absorbed into blobs of infantry, which is totally fair when it's the result of my poor maneuvering. When it's because a single cavalry unit in a group got caught by a unit on the edge of a blob that he could've ignored in all actuality, or the unit randomly slowed down during an unnecessary turn in the middle of open terrain, etc, that's where I think I have a fair gripe. I'm just going to adjust my playstyle to fit the game, but all of my cavalry maneuvers are going to have to be very micro-heavy, more than they already would've been without the weird stuff going on with their pathing.

    Hi Malleus, as far as the video editing/compilation of shots, it seems like the shot at 00:23 gets really blurry and has some pretty bad tear-like issues (maybe it's just on my end). I think it might have to do with the specific motion of the camera relative to the units. Might I humbly recommend using more shots like 1:02 (where the units are fine and it's actually just the grass that is tearing which is hard to notice) or like 0:44 (stationary camera)? It's really not too big of a deal but I'm just trying to give some positive criticism! :)
