    Based on multiple recommendations I found online, I just purchased two of these switches - a 2500-48T, and a 3500-48POE. Using this video I have been successful and thrilled to configure them for my growing homelab (with zero prior networking knowledge, other than as a "power user" for ~25 years...). Thanks for the info!

    Thank you so much! As someone who has never touched SFP or a managed switch before, I was having a heck of a time figuring out how to get this going. Plugged into a "stack port" (and having no idea what such a thing was), I couldn't figure out why I couldn't connect to anything. Following the steps here, I have a functional 10GB network going. Thanks!

    Thanks so much for this! I just bought this switch and the info about deleting 10Ge stacks dug me out of the hole I found myself in. Hope you will consider doing other content on this switch. I am interested in learning how to efficiently use VLANs and LACP potentially. I have a storage server and an ESXI windows home lab on a couple R710s. I already have 10Ge cards in those servers directly connecting to my workstation. I was interested in the possibility of using two 10Ge ports in something like an LACP configuration for my storage.

    • @ViciousXUSMC
      @ViciousXUSMC  5 лет назад +2

      I spent the better part of my weekend configuring VLAN's and converting my home network from a flat layer 2 subnet to now a "Client" and "Server" subnet. It's extra security but the main reason is I have Jumbo Frames on the server subnet and using the switch as a layer 3 device lets me get away with it. So I probably will come up with a video on part of that. I am not using LACP since it wont really help much in a home setup, but I am using multiple uplinks on ESXi with explicit failover order for redundancy.

    Thanks for the great videos! My S3500 arrives soon. I bought it for the 10Gb ports & plan to connect my home NAS & Servers together with my Workstation in my home office/lair. All the gear needing 10Gb connections is in one room, so I can use DACs. My internet isn't super fast and enters the house in another room, so I hope to use a 1Gb port to uplink the switch out to the internet. There's Cat 5e in the walls and a consumer mesh router connected at the gateway modem. Any gotchas that you can think of associated with connecting the switch to an upstream consumer grade router via a 1Gb port?

      I actually got an answer somewhere else on the internet, inter-VLAN routing is enabled by default and cannot be disabled globally at all, to give VLANs routability you just add an IP address to the VLAN interface. Any further restriction between your routable VLANs will be done using ACLs. It makes sense honestly.

    so it sounds like most of the config is done through the console. So I guess you would set up vLan lags ect all though the console, and not though the gui web interface. I like to see what all can be done though the gui web interface. after seeing more of these video's is making me want to stick with Netgear yea they cost more but I can just about every thing though the web gui. from stacking ports, lags, to vlans ect. Or when you mess up then yet you have to het the console like I did when I deleted vlan 1, witch was a massive mistake, but fixed it. witch took like forever to figure out. Looks like this switch is more like the cisco switch's witch every thing is primarily set up though the console ect. am I correct.

      Your welcome, I kind of what to just toss them in tonight but I'll wait until I can set aside some time to film it. The big question is will the less powerful Noctua fans keep the temps down, I already know they will work (with modification) as I tested that. In a worst case scenario maybe I replace only half the fans as not all parts of the switch are as hot.

    • @YamilLlanos
      @YamilLlanos 5 лет назад

      @@ViciousXUSMC Yeah that was going to be my next question. Those little Noctua fans are about twice the price of some other models I see recommended for switches, so I was wondering if the switch could run with two fans instead of four. I live in a place where it stays 14-20 Celsius all year long so heat is not really a big concern for me. I just bought the switch and I am actually waiting your video to purchase the fans LOL. There is a guy on Reddit who claims he used cheap silent (non PWM) fans and the switch has a warning but it works fine. I would prefer the PWM option

    I have purchased three Aruba S3500-24P switches for a house that is currently under construction. I just received them today and was trying to test it out in my office. This video was very informative. I was able to set them up as shown and updated the firmware to 7.4.1.12. My last problem though is linking it to my existing network. I'm sure I'm overlooking something quite basic. As I don't have the SFP+ transceivers, I plugged a network cable from a network jack (going to another switch) into this switch and it took my network down. I then realized that maybe it needed to be a cross-over cable instead of a standard cable, going between one switch to another... apparently, that isn't it either as that also took my network down. Do I need to set a switchport to be a link from my other switch? My other switch is a Dell PowerConnect 5448. I have not had to do any customization to my Dell... it worked straight out of the box; at least until now.

      @@CarbonSteel93 Yep, that is all you need is the MTU I set mine to 9216 the max. Its the VLAN that required a switching profile to apply to the interface.

    EDITED: With the newest firmware, the commands shown in the video no longer work. -- I am sorry, I was in the wrong. I didn't know you were supposed to Factory Reset AFTER updating the firmware. That's where I went wrong.

    even after enabling compatibility mode in IE I see the aruba header but no actual content. any ideas?

      Yes, I had this issue with my 2nd switch. The firmware was an odd revision. I did a firmware update via USB to the newest and it fixed my issue. Put the firmware on the root of your USB in a folder called arubaimage. Then just use the buttons on the switch to select upgrade image.

    This isn't a full 10G switch like the title seems to make it. This is a gigabit switch with 4 10G ports.

  • @TheRangeControl
    @TheRangeControl 4 года назад

    NOT 10Gbps Networking if only the trunk lines... it's only Gigabit, isn't it? 10G is only to tie one Gigabit switch to the other without bottlenecking... I mean, i'm kind of a noob, but am I wrong here?
    Home networking at 10Gbps would be all of the ports running 10gbps so that different appliances with 10G cards can benefit... Again, if I am wrong, please re-educate me.
    Not trying to be a dick... it's just that I have 9 appliances with 10Gbps cards, and the title could lead some to misconstrue.

    CLI is just so old school, I want to throw up in my mouth. It takes 2x as long to configure something in CLI then it does in GUI. Waste of time.
