Also in PA, the green sunfish got huge. Back when I used to catch them they didn't have cell phones, so I don't want to hear it about getting proof. But I did look them up on Google images, and some of them get pretty dang long like between 12 and 15 in and they're thinner like a longer shaped fish, than fatter an averaged sized sunfish.😅

Bluegill have a spot at the anterior base of their dorsa fins. That second fish you caught to eat had a bit of red on the opercular flap, so maybe a red eared/green hybrid?
Panfish ID tips: There are only two thick bodied/bigger mouth panfish in most of the South. Those are warmouth and green sunfish. The most obvious way to tell you have a green sunfish is they have those yellow/orange tipped fins. Warmouth are brown/black with mottled coloration and green sunfish are more solid green. Also warmouth have 3 anal fin spines. I didn’t include crappie in the bigger mouth big bodied panfish mix because they are easy to identify. If you ever get into panfish ID fins almost always are the easiest determining factor in what you have. Coloration and patterns might change in different regions and different bodies of water, but ray counts and fin shapes are always consistent. Opercular flap (commonly called ear flap) is also a pretty good indicator. For instance pumpkinseed and longear are often confused with each other. A longear has a long and rectangular shaped opercular flap and a pumpkinseed has a round opercular flap with a small red spot on the back. Yes I am a panfish ID nerd 🤣.
I don't consider myself a panfish nerd, however I do believe in knowing how to identify the majority of native species....the 1000 nicknames for the same fish (mostly the south) is aggravating. Why can't we just call fish by their actual names? Common Examples: Striped bass/rockfish and freshwater drum/sheapshead
Thats how i spend my summers. Load the kids up and spend a week or two at a time at the lake. Cooler full of ice brine and trow filets in it as we catch them throughout the day. Fry them up at night over the fire.

You can catch anything in the surf with lighter tackle with the exception of sharks . The one issue you may have is rod length. Surf fishing rods are typically a lot longer to cast farther but you can certainly fish with any size reel.
