      If you don't mind my asking.... What did you do in the Navy?
      Both my mother and father are retired Corpsmen. My mother was in medical research (mostly epidemiology) but my father did it all: FMF, HMC, Indep.Duty and did four tours in Vietnam (3 on the ground with MC and one on ship). When I was 17 I tried to enlist for Corpsman as well but at 5ft & 89lbs they pretty much just laughed at me (I can't say I don't blame them tbh) so I'm an Extreme Conditions Medic in the civilian world.

    On a Navy ship in the Pacific in 1968, we had seas that were worse than the video shown here. And the ship I was on was nearly 700 feet long, 75 feet wide and with a 35 foot draft. The bow was 50 feet out of the water under normal conditions but was buried several times during this storm, with water coming all the way back to the forward superstructure. It was pretty damn scary.

    From Wikipedia: "The 1888 Moradabad Hail was a severe hailstorm that occurred on 30 April 1888 in Moradabad, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It had the highest mortality associated with a hailstorm, and killed 246 people, 1600 cattle and sheep with hailstones as large as “goose eggs and oranges and cricket balls. The hailstones were reportedly as big as oranges and in some places accumulated to up to 2 feet in height."

      What surprises me the most is that so much accumulated. Hailstorms are relatively common here and I've seen large hail like this before before but never so much at once. They're warm weather events so typically they melt within a few minutes of hitting the ground, just like an ice cube would in warm weather. Seeing several feet of it would blow my mind. What a storm.

    I had a similar thing as 2:43 happen to me near Pella, Iowa in the mid-1990s. I was driving my pickup truck along the highway, and noticed that slush-balls were hitting the windshield. I thought this interesting, but they soon turned into baseball sized hail! I quickly pulled over as the storm pummeled my truck (leaving dimples from nose to tail) and severely cracking my windshield. I saw a poor UPS truck across the highway, with the driver holding his hands over his ears as the hail beat his truck like a drum! Good times.

    Imagine the terror of that North Sea storm hitting a ship in the pitch black of night.

    • @captainwin6333
      @captainwin6333 2 года назад +7

      Some of these storms last for days so these vessels can be out in them for that time. Most of these ships are support vessels for all the oil rigs out in the North Sea, this is a requirement after the Piper Alpha disaster and they tend to be out at sea for a month at a time before a crew change.

    • @bobsondugnutt2762
      @bobsondugnutt2762 2 года назад +2

      @@captainwin6333 Yeah, this looks uncomfortable, but not necessarily dangerous for a vessel in good shape. This particular one seems to be handling the seas quite well. She is pitching and rolling quite a bit, but smoothly, without snap rolls or smacking the bow. Also, being a smaller vessel (support vessel, and not a cargo carrier), she is not at risk for sagging and hogging like a longer vessel would be.
      For comparison, look at this: ruclips.net/video/gaZhnNlutuQ/видео.html. It may not look as dramatic, but for a ship that was not built for the conditions it is fatal.

    • @RaptorTroll360
      @RaptorTroll360 2 года назад

      Not necessarily, they might not cover storm damage under standard insurance policy, having it as an "extra luxury option" and even if they technically did "cover" weather caused damage, insurance companies are very notorious for weaseling their way out of paying a single penny for the damages that they previously claimed they would cover.
      And they get away with it in so many cases that apparently it has become an industry wide standard practice, especially when it comes to screwing over private individuals who are not rich enough to sue the insurance company into bankruptcy(as would be deserved), for the rich folks the insurance actually works as intended, while the "poors" get scammed of their money for years only to get nothing in return, because of some lawyer talk legalese technicality, that invalidates their insurance.
      Sometimes some of the "poors" manage to win some court cases, but by then the insurance payout barely covers the cost of the legal expenditures, and even if it were one out of hundred cases that went to the little guy, it would still be profitable for the insurance companies to keep screwing over people that can't actually afford a legal battle, when they're in need of money because of whatever happened to that which they had ensured.
      Also:
      There are places in the Tornado Valley, where windshields are pretty cheap to replace, probably due to savvy mechanics shops ordering them in bulk for the storm season.

That's why ive subscribed for his English narration is plainly educational for those studying English grammar. Unfortunately some youtube vlogers i dont like is their local slang the way they speak hastily, they're eating their own words!!! They dont consider their listeners on how to understand the narrators, they dont mind it as long as they upload vlogs!! Kudos for this channel, keep up the good work!

      Already, your grammar is better than most Americans. Nice job hyphenating multiple words combined to form an adjective ("word-for-word sequences," although "word for word" means verbatim, or repeated exactly).
      "Understood by an uneducated listeners" should be "understood by uneducated listeners" or "understood by an uneducated listener".
      Aside from that and a few missing commas and a misspelled word or two, your English is pretty good!

    In the early 1970s, while stationed in Sicily (with the U.S. Navy) we rented a car and drove up onto Mt.Etna. it was the only time that I would ever be so close to a volcano. The area was deserted with the twisted remnants of a " ski lift " type structure near what was a summit of the mountain. I was surprised by the look of the then inactive volcano, like the surface of the moon. BTW, the soil near our air base was volcanic and when it rained the mud became extremely sticky and slippery.
    I would be stationed there twice in the 70s, but no big eruptions either time, but you could see vapor clouds from our base about 20 miles away as the mountain dominated the landscape on that part of the island.

    It's possibly worth noting that the timing of the footage for Mt Etna gives a slightly weird impression of how active it is- that 2019 one wasn't the last eruption, it was just one with a good camera well placed to see it. The last eruption, at the time of writing, was 'yesterday', and there was another large one in 2021 (likely along with smaller ones, because it erupted 16 times in 2001. Not since 2001, just in 2001).

    Clip No 1- I have to point out that volcanoes rarely produce smoke when erupting. Ash, yes ( dark grey) steam yes, ( light grey and white) but smoke, no. Smoke is the result of combustion, and few volcanoes have anything combustible in their makeup, or produce combustible materials. The only time you'd get smoke is when lavla or hot volcanic rock came into contact with vegetation, and sets it alight. Fagradalsfjall in Iceland last year produced smoke when its lava set moss, grass and lichen growing on the older rocks alight.

    They released reservoirs in Houston after Harvey, ultimately flooding more neighborhoods, but sacrificing them for the sake of preventing even more extensive flooding. It destroyed my aunt’s house, and they had to be rescued. She was so furious, as I would be, too. When it’s your house sacrificed for the greater good, it’s hard to comprehend.

    • @MegCazalet
      @MegCazalet 2 года назад +2

      @@vexile1239 You’re so kind to ask, thank you. It’s complicated. Insurance, City of Houston, lawsuit against the city, the expected nightmare. The City was ultimately pretty terrible in the long term with helping people impacted despite the huge budget they had just for that purpose. My aunt and uncle (Diane and Sam, and their little dog Biggio) lived with my parents for two months, got compensated a mere TWO WEEKS at a hotel, and paid out-of-pocket (when they were supposed to get a subsidy) for an apartment for a year while they rebuilt their house. My other aunt and uncle (Kelli and Tom) lost their home as well, just from the natural devastating flooding, and their whole neighborhood was so destroyed, having been built IN A FLOOD PLAIN (WTF), that they ALL JUST WALKED AWAY from it. I think the City bought their homes?
      Kelli and Tom have since divorced and moved on, but Diane and Sam are happily back in their rebuilt home. My aunt had fun decorating, but I think she has lingering trauma she hasn’t really faced. I still have trauma of my own from Harvey, and we didn’t lose our house, just had to flee it on foot through tummy-high waters to trek to my parents, who had electricity; my husband and I each carrying a dog and otherwise just my medication and important documents, not knowing if we’d return to find our house flooded or not. Scary journey. Our house was fortunately on a high enough elevation. This time.
      I now keep a hatchet it my attic, just in case we someday do flood and are eventually forced to escape to the roof. People died in their attics when the rising floodwater trapped them and drowned them. Flooding is more terrifying and destructive than it first seems. And the water is filled with fifth, sewage, all kinds of bacteria, chemicals, fire ants and snakes and other critters. Even touching it is dangerous, but everyone had to live in it or trudge through it for days, even weeks. My friend got a flesh-eating bacterial infection on his leg. He survived, thankfully.
      Oh, on top of the flood, we had JUST, as in days before, closed on the sale of my late grandparents’ house, the home the family grew up in for 50 years after moving from PA. The buyer was only going to flip it, not live in it. We asked if we could rent it back for just a few months so Diane and Sam could live there, but the buyer said no! I was so furious. My grandfather had only passed away a few months before, after we personally did hospice care for him so he could pass at home. A lot of heartbreak that year. I thought no year could be worse than 2017. HA!

It required a vivid imagination to believe that there were no additions to the group by way of tomfoolery between MaryAnn/Ginger and almost any of the viral men shipwrecked with them (except the Professor who occasionally displayed homosexual tendencies) and Thurston Howell (no deliveries of Viagra during that unwoke period).
