I am living in Scandinavia. Many of our traditional knives are stick tang knives. A few of mine are from Finland. The most allround knives are 80-120 mm and used for all daily use. In Finland they are called Puukko with just means knife. The longer once are called Leuku and just means chopper. They are not meant for battening firewood. If you are going to battening larger and more difficult pieces of firewood you should choose a full tang knife like Cold steel SRK or Fällkniven A1. Also knives like from Cassrtöm will do the job. I use stick tang knifes for battening thinner pieces for my twig stoves but for making campfires I recommend to bring a folding saw and an axe. Stick tang knives are not made for heavy battening.

A good Leuku should definitely be able to cope with the tasks you done when testing the knife ,as I said on the last video obviously there knives are meant to be wall hangers and not tool's. Very disappointing I've always liked the look of there knives and tool's but after watching this video I'm glad I never purchased any.😁👍🏻

My Randall model 1 the aluminum cap started to corrode all of the tang (all the way to the guard) by the time I realized it a lot of damage was done. I offered to ship to them and pay for a re-handling and the quote was "If we offered rehandling our blades that's all we would be doing.". Well that kind of sucks to hear from custom maker.... From now on, for me it's full time all the way!

Yep m8. Very poor to hear that from a custom knife maker

Sorry to hear that even Randall is just a steel sharpener and not a real knifemaker. Shame on them

A serious Company won't do that especially nowadays. It is a truly self inflicted bad publicity damage. Thanks for sharing. I am sure Scroogelli will never get my money. Let Kev fix it and improve it. Cheers Bro

Hi there, thanks for reviewing the Roselli Leuku. 👍
I own a lot of Leukus : Marttini, Wood-Jewel, Ahti, Helle, Isakki Jaarvenpaa, Brusletto etc.
    All with wooden handles.
Light batoning is no problem, but I would not use them for thick notted pieces of wood.
If you would like to do that, it is better to choose a less traditional knife, as for example:
Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140 or the Terävä Skrama 200/240, these knives have rubber grips.
Not as beautiful as curly birch......but much stronger !

That is a shame mate for a blade that size it should be able to baton at least reasonable pieces but on the bright side I look forward to seeing what Kev can do with it

Sorry to see a nice knife been damaged like that.
Personally I am not into buttoning with knives, I use an axe but if you method of wood splitting is buttoning with knives I think a full tongue knife will be most appropriate.
I have been using roselli knives for the last 12 years and the only issue i had is some chipping with their UHC steel but never use them to button.
Having said that, this could be an internal problem with handle in the way it has been attached, because they should be able to take some beating.

It looks like a good knife for survival but I think the handle material choice has compromised it. Sure it looks nice but it’s not designed for hard use.
As for the warranty, it’s “buyer beware” I guess. Seems like a case of the warranty is fine but what the knife is “allowed to be used for” isn’t. Given how many people baton I’d suggest you won’t be the first or last to run into this problem.
Stacked leather, micarta or some rubber like the skrama and you’ll be fine.

Interesting as their own video ; Roselli - One Knife For Life shows batoning! Regardless get yourself a nice bit of stag horn or a good hardwood drill a hole and a bit of epoxy and your good to go. Customizing the handle will make it more special for you and that blade steel deserves the fix. Cheers.

Origin knives are going to try and replace the handle for me. Hopefully it will work better for me then

I still think it was most likely a combination of flawed fitment that caused the failure and perhaps a flaw in the handle material itself. I did some light kindling battoning with my Ahti 180 and Wood Jewel 210 yesterday (the head cold seems to be clearing) and didn't find any issues. I have also seem a few videos on Stromberg and Erapo leuko that get battoned as well.
None of these brands are over 3.5mm thick either.
They are also cheaper than the Roselli. I hope to rest further today if I can stay out of bed!

@@easygoingoutdoorse.g.o7342 I am wondering about the tuning fork effect as well as I can't say I have experienced that with my hidden tang blades. That I am not sure about.

Well you can see it clearly affecting my left hand in the video clip as i baton the logs.

@@easygoingoutdoorse.g.o7342 oh absaloutely! Im not disputing it at all, just not sure what the root cause may be because I don't have a hidden tang knife that does the same but I do have flat tang knives that do, but that is mostly a function of the handle design. I think I need to revisit some blades if I have the energy because this has really gotten me curious!

Almost like they’re admitting to the fault but not admitting it at the same time, you’d think a famous company would stand by their products you’d get a better warranty with a bread knife !like I said previously I’ve had no problem with my wood jewel Leuko which is considerably cheaper .
    All the best Mick
