ok whoever just said he was ugly...whats the point of that? he did a nice thing and put this on youtube for everyone else... thank you and you are a great guitar teacher!
Majorly delayed response.. sorry.. but the exact placement for that is, from the low E string and down, 7-9-9-8-x-x (the x meaning, don't worry about those strings). And you would use the index finger for the low E string, ring finger for the A string, pinky for the D string, and middle finger for the G string.
I'm pretty sure it should start on the low E string.. as far as how many times.. I totally don't remember haha. Try playing along with the song! (don't forget to tune down half a step though)
wtf matheusmunhos,he's not ugly,he looks awesome :D and he's a great teacher. ok this is like the third video i've commented on of yours in the past 5 minutes but oh well, your videos are too good (: i was wondering if you could do another Death Cab song - I Will Follow You Into The Dark.Or if not possibly Send Me On My Way by Rusted Root?Great song.Love your videos.
Thanks for this bud. Makes it a bit easier if I'm out camping and I dont have to tune and retune for every single song that comes up. I also am just obsessed with this song. This is simple and beautiful. 👌
@@CurtainGuyPlays I got the same feeling from this. So glad that people can still appreciate this music. It’s dark, for sure. But if you play it at the right time, it works
I can tell you but.. I'm not sure how to describe it via text.. Also I don't think there's one set strumming pattern, it might change up a couple of times. Sorry if this is super confusing.. D stands for Down Stroke, U for Up Stroke, and * is for rest (aka just pass the strings on this stroke) The one I usually use for the strumming section is.. D, *, D, *, *, U, D, U, *, U, D, U, *, U, D U (repeat)
Hey this is the second video of yours I've run across, and even though I love Lack of Color when I used to listen to it years ago, I didn't really care to learn it. But I decided to watch anyway and because of how easily you explain it, I can now play this song! Thanks bro.
I'm referring to the frets on the guitar starting from the low E string closest to you down to the high E string. So for example 7-9-8-8 would mean the 7th fret of the E string, 9th fret of the A string, and 8th fret of the D and G string.
This is an awesome video and thanks to it I've learned how to play this song pretty well! The only thing I will say is on the verse when you strum the open E and use the A string on 11th 7th and 9th fret I think it's A LOT easier to use the D string and go from 6th, 2nd and 4th fret. That way the transition to the second part of the verse is a lot easier because you are already on the D string. Also, I think that is the way Ben actually plays it but to each his own. Great job either way!
great tutorial ! But my only problem is, that I don't know how I have to tune my guitar 1/2 step down? I'm actually always playing in standart tuning, so I have no idea. I hope you can help me! .. guess if you know how to do it, it's pretty easy. :D
every time i strum my e string sounds like mcdonalds sprite 😰 but ive got the plucking part (almost) down! moving from the first couple of a string notes to the g and d notes is tricky
Whoops sorry for the late response.. I'll copy and paste from an earlier response: D stands for Down Stroke, U for Up Stroke, and * is for rest (aka just pass the strings on this stroke) The one I usually use for the strumming section is.. D, *, D, *, *, U, D, U, *, U, D, U, *, U, D U (repeat) Hope that's not too confusing!
For some reason my a sounds all ringy only when I play on the eleventh fret :( it sucks and I just got my strings replaced too.. Well anyways great tutorial
i see ur strummming pattern it works but can u help me with the actually strummin pattern i suck at figuring it ou on other video your is great though kudos
@paramoretwilight101 Just remember that the bass note follows almost immediately after the melody note. Hard to explain it via text, but.. it's kind of like a heartbeat. The second note follows quickly after the first note.. the first note being the one on the A string, and the second note being the one on the low E string. Does that help?
if you're having a hard time just play them as straight 16th notes starting with the low E. it sounds just fine that way. as you practice more you'll get the slight difference and "heartbeat" but it's very subtle..
Awesome lesson!!! Learned this song in no time, think you could do a tutorial on "for a better day" by city and colour? Would really appreciate it! Thanks
Ok.. another super late response, sorry.. but it turns out you actually don't have to avoid the B and high E strings all the time.. they actually sound kind of nice with the song, and if you listen to the actual recording I think you can hear them occasionally. If you do want to avoid them though.. I'd say just angle your strums in such a way that they hit mostly the strings closer to you.. aim high, I guess. It'll start to come naturally with some practice and persistence.
This is a quick and great sounding song to learn, but it is so difficult to get the timing of the melody and guitar in sync when I sing and play together. Any tips on that?
i noticed that too. but i'm not sure if that's how ben plays it. because you know that softer sound when your up on a high fret as apposed to an open string. it kinda has that. i think this video may be acurate. either way both ideas work very well
Sorry I didn't get to you on time haha.. glad you figured it out though! I always check my comments but I usually am only able to respond like once a week
There are actually a few tutorials out there already.. but the ones that I've seen have been a little confusing. My favorite one is by mikesmai.. but even that one I feel is a little overwhelming. I don't know if I can play it perfectly but if you'd like I might be able to give you my take on how to play it. Any specific questions though?
Ah this was incredibly helpful, thank you! Before I had the basic melody down, but not the chords. Just a question though -- are you using a specific strum pattern for the chords? I can't really tell exactly. Thanks so much! : )
hey i did a cover of this song. to view/hear it you can click my username, look for the playlist that says "butcher series", click that and then "lack of color" is the 1st vid.
ok whoever just said he was ugly...whats the point of that? he did a nice thing and put this on youtube for everyone else...
thank you and you are a great guitar teacher!
Thanks for the help with that weird chord. That's a major seventh. I couldn't figure that out when I was hearing the piano in the track.
For practicing: here's where he plays all the parts together so you can repeat it and play along. 6:39
thanks
omg this video is so old... 2008!! amazing

finally... finally learned the strumming part... and MY FINGERS BLEED >: D.
You actually don't really have to for this song.. you can leave the B and high E strings open. Give it a shot!
Thanks a lot for the video. Its the first song I learnt on the guitar, will always remember you :)
I came here to say this too! I remember you when I first tried to play anything dude thanks so much mate 😊 @curtainguy

Awesome thank you so much. Love this
i play this in drop D capo on the first fret. i think it sounds right that way.

wow your probably the best guitar teacher ive seen on youtube. thanks
Thank you
can you post the progression of the chords for the 2 strumming parts? that would be great.
but if not, you still helped A LOT ;) thx!
Thanks so much for the tutorial!

For those chords,I wrote out the frets in the info section, you might want to see if that helps.
TIP: after you play the B chord, slide your index finger AND pinky finger up a fret to the C note for a C Diminished chord.
Seems like there's a lot of requests for What Sarah Said haha.. I'll have to take a look at that song again.
you seem really chill...
you are awesome!

This was made a few months after I was born LOL
Thanks for this though
Wow this is older than I remembered
Can you do Suzie ( I Love You)? by Michael Bernard Fitzgerald.

I think I may have posted that in the info section in the top right of the page.. but if that doesn't answer your question let me know!
thx so much, great song & great video!

thanks uhhhhh how do u avoid the b and e string when struming haha

buddy wth yo , thats awesome . . well explained too
i'm kinda confused by this. anyone mind making/linking tabs closest to this?
Great tutorial, thank you. :)
Thanks for the feedback man!
No problem glad to hear it!
I'll add it to my list of requests!
I have a full guitar cover for what sarah said, if you guys want it and to make it better, haha. just ask.
very helpfull and well explained, thanks (:

Thankyooou! But unfortunately i can't play some of the chords because my hands are too small :(
excellent tutorial, is it in standard tuning tho?
great job thanks so much! lol I have the same guitar =) love it
Hahaha I remember you used to point out my piano screwups all the time!
I actually did make one mistake.. but I'll let you find it yourself =)
Thanks for a guide. :3
Thanks so much!
the strumming part is difficult. Do i mute the bottom strings B n E?
how are you not outstretching your index finger when holding down the fourth string after the chorus?
I think it was helpfull for many people, but not for me. haha :D
i'm just suck at guitar :(

that weird "E" chord u talk about is actually an Emaj7 chord
i'm sure a lot of people do. my friend also has a takamine. calm down.
