The fact he was able to even hit .200 after not playing for over a decade shows what an otherworldly athlete he was. Nobody else could have done that. I would be surprised if even the guys who were drafted to the MLB but chose another sport (Tom Brady, Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson etc) would be able to hit .200 in AA even just a few years removed from the game, let alone not playing since their Jr. year of HS over 10 years ago.
And then once he proved he could do it he goes back to the NBA and doesn’t skip a beat, winning 3 straight rings again. He truly was unreal 🐐

Michael Jordan's history with baseball reminds me of Ken Griffey Sr. He grew up playing football, basketball, and running track, only playing baseball because he had the time. He favored football as his preferred sport and most of his friends thought it was the sport he was best at.
But when he was about to graduate high school, he found out Ken Jr was on the way, so he had to take the fastest and most assured paycheck to support his new family, and that meant baseball's extensive minor league system. He wound up being pretty okay at baseball, too (although not nearly as good as his son), but it does kinda make one wonder if he'd pursued the sport everyone thought he was best at, what level of success could he have reached.

The story about Jordan not making his team in HS is technically true, but not how it's usually told. He didn't fail to make varsity. His school just didn't allow underclassmen to play on the varsity team, which was a common practice at the time.

Fascinating. Hitting 200 at AA was amazing for not taking up a bat for over a decade. It shows how hard baseball is. I believe had he started at 18 he would have made the majors but he'd have been Omar Moreno, a great Speedster with very good defense but always having a little trouble with the batting average. But I think on some teams he could have hit leadoff, and Moreno was even the center field on a world champion. The difference is that Jordan's primary sport was one where he could easily lead a team to Greatness whereas in baseball, like Moreno, he would have had to have the right circumstances, but could have been part of a great team.

He had exactly zero chance at the MLB level. The only reason he was out there, taking up minor league roster spots, was his name, and the idiots who went to games solely because of that name. Showed improvement? Sure he did, because the bar was so low. He hit .202 with no power at the AA level. He had no business playing AA. His skill level was closer to rookie ball. He did not have bat speed, whch he was not going to get. He had plus speed. He was able to steal bases, but not at an efficient level (60%). To be fair, though, that is something that I think would improve over time. Experience would lead to better reads on the pitcher. His fielding was poor, but that also would have gotten better.

Jordan's 1993 retirement and move to playing baseball were part of one of the biggest cover ups in sports history. It is tragically obvious that his father's murder was related to what was most likely a gambling related issue. My theory is that Jordan was approached by a shady character who asked him to help throw a series of Bulls games, perhaps a points shaving scheme. Whatever the case, Jordan refused and as a result, a hit was placed on his father. The NBA investigated and found evidence of the link between gambling and James Jordan's murder. The league also found evidence that Jordan was betting on NBA games he played in. The last thing they wanted was for their superstar to become the Pete Rose of basketball, so they came up with the retirement narrative to cover the 1-year suspension he was ordered to serve. He played baseball during this time to give the media and fans something else to focus on other than his odd retirement from the NBA.
The is no other explanation for why he would retire after winning his 3rd championship. If anything, he would have vowed to continue and win a fourth for his fallen father. That is exactly what he would have done had the murder been a random occurrence and he was not being suspended due to his gambling problem.

Which, like I said, is just this 1 man's personal opinion. I'd also like to add that being 2nd to Jordan, and ahead of everyone else who ever laced em up in the NBA is definitely not taking anything away from just how great LeBron has been/is still. There was just something about Jordan being able to erase any doubt in so many basketball fans' (many being the fans of the opposing teams) minds of the Bulls having a chance at losing during their 2 three-peats.

If he stuck with baseball all his life, we will never know. Look at Tebow, he hit .200 pretty much from the start. Tried to stick with it and never it went anywhere. It was clear he couldn't play in the big leagues, ever. Same thing with MJ. He knew it, and went back to where he belonged. @@attackthem8908 You're right. He's not "good" for the level of an MLB player. But that's the problem of our expectations, why should we expect him to be? Hitting a baseball against pro pitchers is a highly specialized skillset which takes years, even decades of practice. He was a serviceable minor leaguer, especially useful in the field and base path who hit .200 and earned a paycheck, even for a short time. That makes him way better than 99.5% of people in this comment thread, even some who tried to make the league.

Please Google names you don't know before you say them on a video. It may not be that important to most, but if you're going to do a video about a previous era, saying people's name correctly is the least you can do. I'm sure Dick Vitale would agree.

because Vitale has never gotten a player's name wrong or anything...Oh wait, he has, a lot. Almost like his job was to know the 10 guys on the court's names.

The ONLY REASON he played baseball is because he got caught up in the gambling scandal and he was suspended for a year from the NBA so what a great PR stunt.

No, he retired before the suspension hoax. It was just widely believed he'd get suspended because he owned the commissioner's team The Knicks. However, The NBA was never going to suspend its most popular player and the most popular player of all-time.

MJs talent and attitude is by far more iconic than Lebra will ever be.

Jordan was finesse and perfect form. He did astounding things that took your breath away, Lebron is more like a robot. A very dominant robot. But he has zero finesse. I am not in awe when I watch Lebron

MJ wouldn’t stand a chance in today NBA, not because of skill, but due to gambling. He didn’t retire, he was suspended for gambling.

Jordan played Baseball because the NBA was going to suspend him for 2 years for his gambling problem. But he was their meal ticket so he said he was going to retire.

Michael Jordan got suspended from the NBA for gambling on games but the league couldn’t ruin his reputation as he’s obviously the biggest star in the games history. To stay in shape he played baseball. He didn’t just choose to stop dominating basketball in the middle of his prime and move to Birmingham to play minor league baseball lol
