Tony & Chelsea Northrup 20 seconds in he talks about his lens and I don't see it in the list. Also I think the converter is missing from the list. Am I misunderstanding what he is saying? I'll listen again and search comments... thanks again for another great video...
Tony & Chelsea Northrup I'm still waiting for the nikon fit telephoto lenses😑
nice video bro
Tony & Chelsea Northrup this video is officially 5 years old it sucks u didn’t leave a link for Christopher or is it a k idk
You guys missed to put the telekonverters in to the description box.
Great advice. Thank you
Love this guy rocking the Tokina. Shows it isn't about who has the biggest or "best" lens.
Chelsea is beautifil
@@alexandrehot5046 yeah
@@jose280714 oh yeah yeah
Hlw
The way that Chris is always scanning his surroundings I can tell he is pro!
Or he has a restraining order out on someone and he’s making sure they don’t sneak up on him.
The main reason I wear a bit of camo is to aid in making myself hidden from "other people" when shooting in the field. Birds will see you regardless, and though some are elusive such as kingfishers, many other species just don't care how close you get. But if you are in an area where you want exclusive shots, and there is other people around, the camo can help you blend in so they can't see you, and come stomping over to ruin your shots.
I couldn't agree more! When people ask me I say... 1 Birds still see me, 2 Hopefully people don't so I can avoid dumb questions, and 3 camo is made for hunting so it is made for the elements and keeps you warm/cool as needed and holds up to abuse...
***** A 2X teleconverter on your 70-200 f/2.8 will give you the best images of faraway subjects.
A lens should never be larger than your arm! That thing is a beast.
Diane Derenia Carpenter That's rather arbitrary...
I find the 2x TCs reduce the image quality too much for my likings. there is a WORLD of difference between the Canon 2x II and III but the Mk III just costs too much and the other 2x options your usually better cropping the image.
The 1.4x is another story, Canon Mk II or Tamron SP (not the black F MC4 one) have great optics and I never worry about putting one behind my lenses.
So, considering I already have the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, how worse would it be with an EF 2x III converter VS the 400mm f/5.6L Chelsea is using?
I don't know from experience because it's too rich for me but most reports online say the 70-200 2.8 II + 2x III have about the same IQ as the 100-400.
Canon tele lenses are white to reflect the sun and reduce heat build up when used outside.
I didn't realize Billy Bob Thornton was so multi-talented. Acting and photography!
You could use a TC with your existing lens, or pick up a 400mm f/5.6, depending on your budget. For a complete overview of lens buying considerations, read my Photography Buying Guide (available using the 'worldwide' link in the description).
I have to say i love the way you all are so down to earth. It almost seems anybody can approach you all to ask questions or to simply ask if one can hang out with you folks to just watch and learn. Like the fact you have all shared your experiences (good and bad ones) that yall havr learned through the years. Thanks so much for all the info. Its REALLY helpful. Its funny to hear you all talk about the tripods/monopods. I have a nikon ed is 300mm not af. And i have to shoot it in manual mode. Its driving me bonkers to figure out what iso and shutter speeds i should be using when shooting a bird in action or sitting on a tree under the shade. Watching this video has now made me want to sell my lens and buy a 300mm af lens. Just too much of a hassle with the one i have. Anywhoodles, thank you all for this video
You are one the best, easy to follow photography "mentor" on youtube Tony.
I am better photographer thanks to you. I'm sure many agree with me.
Best birding gear review I've found on YT. Thanks.
Check "Using Telephoto Lenses" in Chapter 8. And thanks for reading the book! BTW, if you haven't gotten the latest update directly from me, send your receipt or a screenshot to tony@northrup.org... the current iTunes version doesn't have all the videos, because they limit the file size.
Is this dude rolling his eyes at them constantly or is he so used to searching for birds that his eyes are wandering lol
No, I think he has a nervous tick
Zac Govitz we all wildlife photographers have the same tic we are always looking for that next great shot!!
LMFAO seriously! he looks to me as though he keeps rolling his eyes
He is genuinely trying, but very socially anxious.
Ive had another look and the champion may also be on the Autistic Spectrum, and that’s cool, explaining why he is so good at the details in photography
Love the cost saving tips most of all. I use a D7000 and love the camera.
This, for me, was really fun to watch. I like that they don't "need" the most expensive equipment and they showed example photos of all the different gear. Kris seems like a really cool guy and I love that he finds all his gear for super cheap, lol. Fun video. Thanks!
The 70-200 with a teleconverter is viable but not ideal. Check my Buyer's Guide at SDPCommunity*com, specifically the wildlife gear FAQ near the end of Chapter 2.
"7 frames per second or something insane"
hope you are enjoying that A9 in 2018
Worth a note that Military cammo only works on Human eyes, where as Forest/MossyOak styles work on wildlife
You could take neon green spray paint and put stripes on blue jeans and it would work on color challenged species, Deer.. so on.
I was here to find out what kind of equipment is required for bird photography., and I am so happy I chose to watch this video. Not only did I get a lot of valuable info along with comparisons and advantages and disadvs along with it, but also was a very lively discussion with the bonus of hearing out three people's views at the same time. Thank you Tony!
...and I have to add, Chelsea is amazing and she looks and sounds so humble and so are you Tony, even with all your immense photography knowledge and expertise, I really like that with you guys.
Hi, Abdou. I put a video out just a couple of weeks ago that compared the 70D and the 7D for wildlife, so check that out. Also, get my Photography Buying Guide (using the third link in the description, the one with the coupon code) for detailed information about lenses and other wildlife gear. It'll save you hundreds, at least.
I want to hear more from Chelsie.
Screams 😏
She sounds dumb
You spelled her name wrong
chelsy looks amazing....... i love her
Thanks, this video clarified quite a few issues.
You are honest, that makes one hell lot of a difference.
You guys are great. I'm quite experienced at wildlife/bird photography and found myself nodding at everything you say, particularly the bit about tripods, hate them.
How did you start to get paid for taking photos of wild life? Could you make a video about that? Thanks
I ran a website with advertising and sold them as stock... neither of which is profitable today (times change).
Thanks for the reply!
most wildlife photographers make money selling framed prints and such. Or through these kinds of means, making institutional videos and getting paid through youtube.
I would enjoy if you showed how to shoot wild life on a budget
+videofletcher Check out chapter 8 of Stunning Digital Photography.
Tony Northrup Will do, thanks.
Great video guys, Thank so much. And thanks for your honesty when you talk about cropping and also how hard it is to track birds. As a rookie it is great to hear that professionals struggle also with these issues. I feel somewhat normal now, thanks for the great advice..... going to go buy your book now. And like your FB pages.
Check out the Canon 400 f/5.6 prime instead... and look at Chapter 2 of my buyer's guide, which is free for a very limited time at sdpcommunity*com.
Have you seen the recent capture of a green woodpecker with a weasel on its back by an english amateur photographer?
Steve Makin Yes! It's awesome!
Tony&Chelsea while they were TORTURING Kristofer
" watch his poor eyes lol"
This is a pragmatic discussion of all aspects of avian photography. Great job!
Tony and Chelsea. I just watched this video. Amazing session and a little more understanding on lenses.
For bird photography, would you also recommend the Canon 400 5.6 prime over the 100-400 zoom? How big a deal is not having IS?
falcoperegrinus82 Yes, definitely. Check this review, too: Tamron 150-600 f/5-f/6.3 Review: The ultimate wildlife lens for $1,000?
Tony Northrup Thanks Tony!
Tony Northrup I have the Tamron 150-600 coupled with a Canon 6D body, fantastic results!
Richard get the new canon 100-400 L lens mark ii its the best lens in the world check out ken rockwell canon lenses test reviews.
Is is useless for moving objects
omg she is literally perfection
Yup I have no idea how anyone could walk with Chelsea taking photos? I would be able to take my eyes off that beautiful woman! Wildlife? Huh? What wildlife!?
Great video. I am 24 and have been taking photos for press. I find that the canons hold up to half a million photos being taken and still keep taking pictures. My Canon EOS 7D has around 600,000 shutter clicks as of yesterday.
Great guide. And wonderful to see people with a GOOD reason to be in camouflage.
1:59 ISO 32000? Maybe typo and mean't 3200?
5:34, lol yes, seems like she has some muscles to hold it
I really like your videos, I used to and still want to get into astrophotagraphy but I find wildlife fun and challenging, I also enjoyed points made about good gear vs expensive gear. Great Work you guys!!!!! You make it look easy
thanks Tony for posting your insights on photography equipment... I am just getting started building up my gear so this is helpful information
What is the Nikon equivalent of the cannon 7d Mk ii or the 5d mkii???
The D500 is Nikon's 7D Mk II, and the best wildlife camera we've ever tested. Check the D500 review on our channel.
Tony & Chelsea Northrup are there any good Nikon cameras for wildlife that I can find on eBay regularly?
yeah.......the D500
Maybe the D7200
She is just so beautiful.
Im sure she has some lenses pointing at her from all over the land
Yeah!! She is very hottt
These guys are chelsie envy

Check my buyer's guide, specifically the Flash Buyer's Guide, at sdpcommunity(com).
For hand holding when shooting birds I use the 300mm PF with 1.4x on the D500 with grip. I love that combination ... much less weight and very easy to control than my 200-400 f/4. By the way the buttons on the grip still work without the battery installed if you really need to reduce the weight - it uses the battery in the camera.
i quit taking pic to 15aneras,wedding,concerts and models just to star taking pic of what i really love,,, wildlife
Holding a Bazooka that can capture things.
i saw this video back in 2018 and have been using the dual shoulder strap harness, that Kristofer Rowe is wearing, ever since. Best system yet for walking around carrying a heavy camera and lens. Zero strain on the neck and the camera and lens doesn't swing back and forth at your side like a single strap does. Having two attachment points also gives me peace of mind.
Tony you are amazing! Your videos are such good quality, you are so professional, you have written booked which I am planning on getting, and you have inspired me into photography and to get a Canon 70D instead of a T6i. I love watching all of your videos and I can't wait to see more of your amazing work!
Chelsea the most beautiful photografer!
Camo gets u 2 stops closer to the birds I guess
Sooooo.... You think a "stop" is a unit of distance?
Love this. I hate watching so many videos of photographers talking about cameras/lenses and giving reviews without explaining what they actually use it for and the practicality of achieving that.
Good call, Ivar! I made the same upgrade and I've been *so* happy with it.
That's my vlogging camera setup lol
Cringe Lord 500mm? xD
p I think he zooms in on his little pecker 😭
Chelsea is a damn fine looking bird
Granpaaaa?
Love the idea of the dual strap setup. Going to buy one as I have just invested in a big lens and wondered how I would manage to carry it. Thanks!
love you three talking about your gear, keep up the good work
Ceasar Milan's brother!
hi i want to shoot naked birds w a giant lens from far away when they don't know they're being photographed. ... birds.... oh... yeah .. what kind of camera and lens is cheapest ... so i can shoot these um birds?
There is a slight possibility that some of these birds of yours woudn't mind being photographed. You can get a 300mm lens with a teleconverter and that would be a deal.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) cool
I appreciate that y'all discuss the problems and mistakes that you have. I feel better that I have the same complications.
I always understood the crop factor and what it really means, but I have to say you are the first person that explained it in the best possible way. Good job!
weird to see.. 7fps and 20 pics buffer size were considered a lot 3 years ag
Francisco Santos ikr
Guy on the left: mine costs more then yours.
Guy in the middle: casually says "I've won awards with this".
Lady on the right: flutters her eyes and realises that size doesn't matter.
Just ordered your book, will receive on Friday...also ordered the 400 prime f/5.6.
Thanks!
It's always nice to see passionate people, experts in their own field. although I understood only about 40 per cent of their talk. I'm new to those digits and teleconverters are
Have some class you guys she's his wife
is she single tho?
@@Trafficker1985 nah, I think she has a boyfriend.
Shooting birds with bazooka
Chelsea you are right full frame rocks with or without tele converters. I also use the 5dsr with the in camera exchangeable crop although, I loose a few megapixels the images sell.
When your talking those BIG lenses used is the way to go. I saw a used Nikon 400mm 2.8 under $4K in VG cond. Not the newest VR model but even the D-IF-AF-S II is great build quality and optically fantastic.
the guys in the middle has the robotic voice :)
Mohammed you are wright, man
00:02 THAT LIPS BITE THO
Chelsy is simply stunning in her photography and otherwise as well !
Thanks for the post. Great information delivered in a conversational manner that's educational and approachable. Well done.
Oh Hello Chelsea
Helllloooo
***** helloooo (blush)
Mark Meister sorry
*****
Do you model and shoot?
Mark Meister sorry i was in a bad mood
Oh this is when photography was still fun and Tony was a funny guy, so... what happened?
Tiny and Chelsea are still so chill
Learnt a lot from your down to earth approach to wildlife photography videos. My gear is very basic nikon d5600 with a sigma 70-300mm as my budget is tight. Getting fairly decent with your advice and settings. Great work keeps it up
Thanks for your contribution to the community, Cody!
This is NOT off topic....can't be has the word "photographic" in it. ok.
Chelsea is the most beautiful, photographic woman in the world! ; )
nice hickey
Lol caught that too.. he definitely shot that bird last night
I'll add that part of your challenge was probably not having a true optical viewfinder. The latest mirrorless viewfinders are fast, but that tiny bit of latency still makes it MUCH harder to use a telephoto lens, in my experience. Wildlife is one of the few subjects where I still soundly recommend SLRs over the mirrorless brothers.
Very Informative covering most areas needed for bird photography engaging in short trips out. Thanks!
Gosh, that woman is so gorgeous.
every bit of this video is great EXCEPT the one line about camo making you look like "a murderer or a hunter." Are they trying to take a shot at hunters?
Well, hunters are murderers. So it fits.
Murderers kill people. Hunters don't(not intentionally anyways :P)
What an informative vid Tony, thanks i got some incentive to get back into wildlife photography after many year away from the lens..cheers!!
Thanks, and glad it could help!
I always enjoy Tony and his daughter Chelsea's videos!
this chick is hot!
+tommy19851 - Dude, I was thinkin the same thing. I like her stuff the most and she barely talks about it. Ha ha ha... God I love photography.
+tommy19851 She makes me want to get into the wildlife photography game.
+tommy19851 Just thinking that, myself
she got a phat ass too
this chick is bang for the buck
For Canon beginners I'd highly recommend the Canon 400mm f5.6. Good quality, light and much more affordable than a bigger lens. You can also add an extender, although you will only be able to use centre focus points with it.
Mega impressed. I went right off to Amazon and ordered your book. Thank you!
Chelsea is Hott !!!
That's the biggest understatement of the DECADE! She's absolutely amazing; wish she was a model.
goddamn that girl is beautiful
Joshua Nolan she ic cute
Tony, you are one of the best on-camera folks I've ever seen talking about nature shooting. You're comfortable, smart and easy2like. The three of you do a great job in this video...OK, Chris looks kinda uncomfortable @ times, but he is one sharp dude, too. Chlelsea is obviously skilled and cute2boot. Good stuff, period.
You're my favorite, Larry. Nobody has ever called me cute2boot and you know what? I liked it!
I love how Christopher is able to so great pictures while staying frugal.
HORRRIBLE AUDIO...
I watched the whole video just because of Chelsea. Who gives a damn about photo-nerds talking about lenses
Well, she's also a photo nerd.
i thought i was the only one, that lady is awesome...she really is
My god it’s crazy to see how far we have come with cameras and lenses/image quality compared to 9 years ago.
Great job with this video!
I"ve recently got myself a Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM lens. I want to go to the Danube delta to try it on the birds there with a 2x teleconverter.
I really like this video.. Im just starting to get more serious into wildlife and bird photography.. My budget is low so I start off with a Nikon D3300 and a Tamron AF DI 70-300/4-5.6 VC lens.. Maybe not at the high end, but it will get me going, and it can teach me a lot
Hi, Vicky. At that price point, that lens is your best bet. Enjoy!
And if you're interested in learning more about gear, check out "Tony Northrup's Photography Buying Guide" at Amazon or sdpcommunity*com.
Great video on camera comparisons...(Canon)...I've the T4i and 70D now...just ordered the Tameron 1.4 SP tele converter. Receiving the book tomorrow. Happy man!
Nice to know there are other camera nerds out there. My experience confirms much of what you guys said.
