Great idea with the soffit jig. One improvement could be adding a measuring tape from the cut line to the outside, so you wouldn’t need to spend the time measuring and marking for every cut. Repeatable and fast!

Good day .. nice work , my bird box metal and all my fascias are all custom bent. Prefer to have bend at transition to rake soffit to add support to bottom piece of rake soffit. 2) instead of nailing drip edge face ( which imo is a no no) back caulk fascia with dabs, and gently embed each piece of fascia into caulk (OSi) quad or something flexible.. fascia will never come off, fixated nailing along drip edge and into drip edge can cause buckle, plus, nails remove smooth appearance of drip edge
    Regards
    JS

I actually don't think it's a dumb question. The particular soffit he was using clearly can only be nailed when oriented in one way, but I agree it seems like an obvious optimization if they just manufactured a type of soffit where the nailing flange ran length-wise and so you could do an entire side of a house (or up to the length of your material) in one go. I feel like such a thing almost certainly has to exist, but I've never seen it.

    • @TheExcellentLaborer
      @TheExcellentLaborer  3 года назад +1

It’s called vented soffit. It’s actually made out of vinyl. I did that because you need venting for your roof. So yes it’s for the airflow and not having that can cause your roof to sweat and rot. Hope that helps!

Yes, that is indeed what happens . It all rotted on an old house I bought years ago.
I saw that the f- channel like bracket here was missing over the door. No air flow either. Also, the birdbox had a solid enclosure inside of box over the door.
So, the aluminium door rotted out first. (directly beneath the missing part and solid enclosed box with no airflow to attic.) Then the interrior walls around the door started leaking. along with all electrical wiring. Dangerous situation all things combined.
Thank you for all of your helpful videos. This is a very big job for me. However, knowing why it has happened several times in a row after repairing the first two rows of roof twice in the same places. I can better understand how this keeps happening.
At least in part. Now, I can start with those repairs and go forward. Slowly and carefully. Thank you again Josh. Incredibly useful video for me. Keep up the tutorials!

You use a framing square to mark a line that will be level with the sub fascia. Look at him at 1:26 as he holds the framing square against the sub fascia to make his mark.

John is right. It’s going to vary depending on the pitch of your roof to and what do you use for sub facia.

Hi Josh, If you nail the soffit firm rather than loosely doesn't that restrict any expansion? It is such a small section at 12 inch so any expansion would be minimal anyway I guess. Recently found your channel and is by far the best I have found. Thanks!

Does the aluminum fascia come in a smooth finish w/o the ribbed look? I don't like the 2 lines running thru it and would prefer it smooth or even better with a wood grain pattern.

As long as there is F channel to put it in it should be fine with the siding already installed.

How would you nail the S channel without leaving the nailing flang exposed on the gable if you're using T1-11?

@@TheExcellentLaborer...I am using everything that you used in the video. Your S channel was nailed to the house wrap with the nailing flang in the downward position. I know YOUR vinyl will cover and hid the nailing flang. I will have already put up T1-11. I can’t turn the S channel upside down to insert the 12 inch soffit in but I don’t want the nailing flang exposed. Thanks elvinvrogers@hotmail.com

@@elvinrogers6397 oh that’s the “F” channel. Are not sure what your overhang looks like but if you turn the F channel up the other way you can notch it around the blocking of your ever hang nail it in behind the soffit. Does that make sense?
