They both sound great but in the first riff I found the Standard to be more brilliant and in your face than the Special which is the opposite of what you would think would happen. P-90s tend to be brighter than comparable humbuckers. The SG Classic from years ago has the P-90s with the Tune-a-Matic and regular tailpiece. I remember their necks were also quite beefy.
You’re definitely the SG guy. I only have one, a 2004 Faded in walnut. It’s very humble, but I love it. Someday, I hope to get a second - ‘64 with a maestro? Maybe. Cheers.
Thanks for the video man! I have been following you for a while. I like how direct you are. I own a 61 SG and would like to buy an instrument with P90s. Have you heard of the Gibson SG Classic model? They have Tunomatic bridges. Gibson made them in the 2000s and now only offered through Epiphone it seems. Maybe I should wait for Gibson to re-issue it. I really don't want to have to wait though lol
Thanks. The Gibson versions pop up on the used market quite often. The big benefit obviously like you said: tune o matic. They are usually fairly priced on the used market. Best of luck! Cheers -Ryan
I just bought the custom shop 63 sg special after only owning strats. I’ve always put super slinky 9s on my strats, so naturally did on my SG. I have to say the 9s on my SG feel WAY lighter than my strat. I also feel like it goes out of tune much easier and sounds a bit flatter now that they have been on for a bit. Is this because of the shorter scale? Or am I just crazy?
100% because of the difference in scale and the bridge. Try 10s and it should feel better. But at the same time we all have different preferences lol. Cheers -Ryan
Big Fan of the SG. Not really into the modern variations. I've had several SG, but once I got my CS '64 SG I felt like I finally knew how an SG was originally meant to sound. Glorious.
I’ve both the SG special and the 63 reissue and while the SG 63 is my favorite the Special is still a keeper! For context I’ve also 61 custom shop but never had a standard SG I’ve got along with.
,prefer the standard for neck and pickups

I felt the EXACT same way when I got my ‘61 VOS and ‘64 VOS! Incredible guitars! Cheers -Ryan
