Prince of darkness, 1987. Arguably the most underrated and underappreciated John Carpenter movie ever. A diamond in the rough, a gem . Intriguing story and one of the great things that John Carpenter does...he challenges the audience to pay attention to his movie and think. One of his best soundtracks. JC if you’re listening out there please do a live version of dead space. I’ve heard the rumors that you were very interested in doing so, go for it. Thanks off-the-shelf reviews for the reload.
I'd rather him make his opus, the genre he got into filmmaking he never really got to make, a Western.
Amen
Thanks for the re-upload guys, we appreciate the effort.
*looks around menacingly*
*DON'T WE?*
sure
Yeah for real, let's hear it for the boys! They good.
Yeah I mean I guess...
It's easy to call that guy a stalker, but people always forget that before the smart phone you had to meet people in person.
It wasn't uncommon to meet someone and say "hey I've seen you around, nice to meet you." Or something like that.
You went to a bar and met complete strangers and went home with them. And it wasn't weird. You might even see the same woman around several weekends in a row and then work up the nerve to finally say hello. That was quite common.
It just bugs me that people today will call it stalking. When that's just how you used to meet people.
Those were great times. Apart from some of the monsters I woke up with.
This is not a dream… not a dream. We are using your brain’s electrical system as a receiver. We are unable to transmit through conscious neural interference. You are receiving this broadcast as a dream. We are transmitting from the year one, nine, nine, nine. You are receiving this broadcast in order to alter the events you are seeing. Our technology has not developed a transmitter strong enough to reach your conscious state of awareness, but this is not a dream. You are seeing what is actually occurring for the purpose of causality violation. Top review as always keep up the great work.
That shot @ 35:53 haunted me for _years_ after seeing this movie in the cinema. It's so visually striking; creepy, oddly beautiful, a piece of art, and also hits you as incredibly sad and heroic when it happens. The last act of the film is masterfully edited and paced. Prince of Darkness has always been one of Carpenter's most underrated films, but it's one of my favorites of his.
Horror movies that take place in one location always have the best atmosphere. The Apocalypse trilogy is great, off course The Thing is the best one.
Why the caterpillar 'stache? Brian's moustache is easily explained. In 1987 Jameson Parker was a TV star (Simon & Simon). I believe he grows the awesome flavor saver to seperate the movie character from his TV character.
It's weird... I always 'rediscover' this movie, and I'm like "Oh yeah, this! Let's pop it in!". And then it's simultaneously better than I remembered and not as good as my initial excitement suggests. Then it just slips my mind for another couple years.
Hang on a second. The priest character is not trying to open the container and release it into the world.
However he did invite the professor and his team to come investigate the artifact.
I agree, it is an interesting portrayal of possession. It feels like they are still in there, fully aware of the world, trying to hold on to their sanity and at least trying to fight against the entity controlling them. Prince Of Darkness is not a perfect movie by any means, but it has some cool ideas and a great soundtrack. I saw it a little bit too early on in my life and got plenty of nightmares back then, so it also has a lot of nostalgic value for me.
I liked the review. I think this movie has stood the test of time, and by todays standards will be better with a re-watch. I would probably have rated this a 4/5 when I first saw it, but today it's probably a 5/5. They just don't make em like they used to.
I agree. I feel like this movie got better with age. Or perhaps as I get older my appreciation for it grows.
@@JB-1138 I would say a degradation of quality over time. Most movies in the last fifteen years don't know how to build tension and directors don't know the basics. Simplicity is best and if you watch this in 4K you will be impressed with the image quality to give it something "new". Well worth it. I'll also be watching The Thing for the 6000th time in 4K sometime as well now they released it.
This for me Carpenter's best movie. It gripped me from the start. The ideas posed in the beginning with physics and philosophy. And the movies builds up just like the shinning to a slow crescendo until the end where pace goes up to a manic pace. Loved it. Soundtrack is the best.
It is actually one of the most existentially terrifying movies about the "devil" ever made.
Dennis Dun being a jerk makes sense, he had SERIOUS plans that weekend, he was courting a Chinese lady with jade green eyes.
Much love from over here in the states fellas, so I glad I came across your channel
I love the build up beginning of the movie. I saw this movie at the cinema on its original release back in 87. Absolute Classic.
This movie gave me nightmares when i first saw it as a kid in the 80's.
The dream sequence kept replaying in my mind as i lay awake at night in the darkness, i didn't get much sleep for a week or so after watching this, and mirrors didn't do me any favours either.
The movie's concept of Scientific Theory merging with Religeous Scripture to explain something otherworldly captured my imagination and i bought into the horror manipulating and corrupting people, that scared me immensely.
I love The Prince of Darkness, it's often overlooked among John Carpenter's great list of movies, but it's certainly one i go back to every so often for my thinking man's movie demonic apoccalyptic fix.
Cheers guys.
Gary's hair makes angels jealous.
This is one of my favorites. A nihilistic movie where all faith fails. Doesn't matter if it is spiritual or scientific. The apocalypse trilogy is an amazing body of work by Carpenter and it is sad that none of those movies performed well commercially.
Radio carbon dating only works up to about 50,000 years ago due to the half-life of Carbon 14 (The radioactive carbon that is datable and contained within all living matter). Before that you must use an alternative dating method. Oh and might I mention, you can't carbon date corrosion it needs to be the aforementioned organic matter to carbon date. Otherwise, fantastic movie imho.
I really liked Prince of Darkness, especially the metaphysical debate which you don't normally get in horror movies. Creeped me out as a kid when I caught it on tv late!
Donald pleasences speech about modern times, us worshipping false icons always stuck in my head. More true than ever....
Edward bevington I swear it's an amazing script, very relevant these days!
I love that jump-scare at the end. I do it myself every morning just to keep everyone in the household on their toes. You didn't mention though the main Crux of the movie, which is that the other universe is the antimatter universe. This is a very efficient way of combining science with religion; the other dimension where Heaven and Hell is supposed to be is equated with antimatter which, it is surmised, constitutes a separate inimical universe. And of course, when matter comes into contact with antimatter, they both destroy each other, resulting in the Apocalypse.
I'd like to think all the classic John Carpenter movies exist in the same cinematic universe.
Hypothetically this is happening at the same time as Assault on Precinct 13, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, In the Mouth of Madness, etc.
I know the years don't exactly match up for that to happen, but it works in my head.
This movie scared the pants of off me as a kid and still does. So freaking creepy - especially the ending. WTH?
I see that "pray for death" guy all the time. He greets me when I get to work at 08:30
This movie scared the crap out of me when I first saw it--and believe me, that doesn't happen to me that often...
I saw the movie in the theater on initial release, not my favorite at the time. I love "The Thing", and especially "In the Mouth of Madness". I've re-watched "Prince of Darkness" since and I think it's pretty good now. Honestly, I think the problem was always with Jameson Parker, I had watched a ton of "Simon & Simon" (an old show he was on with Gerald McRaney). I always saw him as A.J. with a mustache.
Finally 💪
Thank you guys
Genuinely one of the creepiest movies in its implications iv seen.
Also. I think the area was 'affected' by the Container thats why we see the strange animals, homeless etc.
Watched this and Race with the Devil when I was young, and they have stayed with me as genre classics!
I think actor playing Brian, never seen him in anything else, I was shocked, excellent performance, convinced me. I liked the performance, I liked the character. Wherever he is, good job buddy both on the role and that World War starting MuhStash
I love the blend of science fiction horror with religion in this film..
I'm good with fermented Satan; distilled Satan is too much.
Hey great review, finally saw this one and at first i agree it's a slow start but it got meto slow down and be in the moment with the movie and that makeup on the blonde woman was pretty gruesome looking
The cinematography, music, and atmosphere of this movie are outstanding - but I wish it had a better cast and better written characters. It's so close to being so much better, but I still enjoy it.
Nice Re-Upload, guys !!
Love this film, thanks for the re-load. OTSR 👊👊
Dope TESD shirt !!!!
One of my favorite movies I would love a Good remake of this classic. It is very underrated thanks for the review.
As someone who is very religious I found this movie to be extremely cool and not offensive at all. It never mocks science or religion BUT you can’t beat Jack Burton and his adventure in little China
I feel like Tom Atkins was unavailable for this film so they looked for an equal mustache
Wow, now I think I found the inspiration for a song from Beyond the Black Rainbow (Dilating Eye) - the intro song is pretty close.
My opinion about the ending. [spoiler] In the end Brian continue to have that dream/message, so they haven't save nothing, the world will be destroyed anyway…and in the last “dream” the savior/antichrist (we don’t kwon) is the girl (Catherine). It was always about her, nothing should came out from the mirror, but it was about something that should go inside! To me it was something that had to come, there is not a battle “good against evil” (and this is even more terrifying). This made me think about what we know of life and reality.. and the beautiful last scene give us no answer.
Tell 'Em Steve Dave.
First saw this as a teen and was fairly obsessed with it. Thanks for uploading.
Total Recall 1990 is on Saturday 10:30pm ITV1 Iain & Gary ok
WHAT THE F**K DID I DO WRONG?!!
People are trying to kill me.
SCREW YOUUUU!

@@jwnj9716 I don't even know anything about MAAAAAARS 🤣
Man I love this movie so much. I need to get a copy and re-watch it asap.
I so love Prince of Darkness, so many great memorable moments and a fantastic cast!
Man this review is TOO GOOD
Saw this movie in a theatre when it came out. Too bad, a bunch of idiots some rows in front of me were laughing about it through the final 30 minutes.
Creep ass movie. The constant un-nerving musical score throughout the whole film too just sets the tone. Absolute gem.
yeah the couch is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!............I mean I like you guys too?
This Is one of my favorite John Carpenter movies along with "Big Trouble In Little China" ( my #1 all time favorite of his ) , and "They Live".
This movie is so great. Massively underrated.
SOUNDS INTERESTING...HAVEN'T SEEN THIS ONE YET.
Its gonna take you 2 or 3 views to get in to it. But this review helps sell the movie in my opinion
Loved hearing the beginning of Alice Cooper's Prince of Darkness at the end. Nice touch, such a good song!
I hope you knew Alice Cooper was one of the cast, bad guy things
@@howiedavis2316 Of course, this is one of my favorite John Carpenter films. He played the lead hobo.
I love the opening of this movie
Great film 👍🎬🎥
Future Walter sent the dream to Brian at his home, because of the timeline being altered.
Or even worse , Brian himself.
I've stayed away from prince of darkness cuz it kinda looks super cheap and shoddy but I'll give it a shot.
Did you know that this movie was originally supposed to be part of the Halloween anthology series.
Oh hell. Lmao
Please review "They Live" If you guys haven't already.
Are you guys from Alabama, UK?
Love your reviews.will yous ever do a star wars review or superman review?
Everybody reviews BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (1986). Everybody reviews THEY LIVE (1987).
Nobody ever reviews PRINCE OF DARKNESS (1987), and it's more than a little irritating.
HELL YES.
Have you guys played Blades of Vengeance on Sega Mega Drive? It's kind of a Golden Axe clone but really good
Credit scene is just under 5 min
Bloody ell both of you look so young here!
Wang, Egg, mr president. U guys do They Live?
Holy shit i miss the couch. Such a better set.
Oh come on that's not stalking, he's attracted to her and waiting for a suave opportunity to have conversation to lead into hitting on her. By 2022 standards men aren't remotely allowed to approach a woman, she pretty much has to come to you and if you know anything about hetero women, they only do that with 9/10+ Roman Chads, so i disagree there. Most women, like to be gracefully, suavely chased IF they like that person.
Omg one of my favorite movies! I love this one!
please review " the prestige "
One for the algorithm
Have you done Amores perros?
Ahaha you guys look so young!
Your god plutonium I think always refered to our nuclear capabilities.
Have you seen the film called Total Recall 1990 Iain & Gary
I watched this the other night, which was the first time I've seen it in 30 years at least. I remember liking it back then, but this time around, I thought it was pretty bad. It starts well, but gets a bit dull and is chock full of absolute scientific babble that just sounds ludicrous. Where's Susan? Who? For me this is the weakest of Carpenter's "big" movies.
I just ate a peanut m&m with no peanut in it. Should I feel scorned?
No
I've always felt The Edge was U2's mos underrated movie reviewer.
Dave talking about "gender roles". 😂 They're not going to sleep with you, Dave
Greatness
Thank you:-) This movie is a master pice. A thinking man's horror movie:-) The Bug man is my faverate too.
You guys
A very disappointing movie. The script is a mess.
Horrific acting in a ridiculous film. It's hard to imagine that the same director made The Thing.
💀
