Its amazing to see so many romanian gymnasts share horror stories from their time in the Deva camps. That's so sad. Romania used to be a powerhouse. Romania needs to reform badly to save a sport that made them famous.
These horror stories came from Romanian gymnasts who competed in the 1990s. These are from the Lavinia Milosovici era. They claimed that life under Octavian Belu was too hard to the point it was like abuse. Belu denies these stories and liked the old system of training that gave coaches complete control of the gymnasts at the behest of both their parents and the State. But by the 90s, budgets for training were slashed as former Communist states struggled toward capitalism. Many coaches left for the West where they could make a good salary. So by the mid 90s, Romania faced little money for training etc, a high tax rate that took half of salaries and and the same uncompromising training system that Nadia Commenici had to deal with. All this was just too much for these girls to bear. 90s Romanian gymnasts decided to stay in Romania but soon regretted it. Later some made ends meet by doing exotic shows for tape when they finally quit. Added to this was Ana Maria Bican getting injured. She was their big hope as by the mid 90s, Misolovici was then old. All of this may have forced the Romanian team to change things when Raducan came around by 2000 but her being stripped of the Olympic was the end of Romania's one hope for a BIG comeback 10 years after Communism ended. Sandra Izbasa is great but you need more than one gymnast to win a team gold medal of course. Now Catalia Ponor is all they have left but only Uzbekistan's Oksana Chesuvitina is older than her at 41 I think! And based on media reports it is a miracle that Ponor was able to even get to the last olympics at all eve though she's awesome. Milosovici and others have moved on and now are stable but the 90s were tough for all former Communist Gymnastics programs except for Russia.
Romanian gymnastics was doing alright until 2004. Even though they only had one AA champion (Raducan/Amanar, depending on your viewpoint) they shone in event finals and as a team. The new code of points really does not play into Romania's "difficult but safe" strategy. But they have had so many welfare issues with athletes. Cojacar claimed she was made to take drugs that made her ill and was physically beaten and Porgras claimed she was picked on- these were two amaing wasted talents. Belu was pressured to leave in 2005 but when they only won won medal in 2008 they thought to bring him back. It hasn't worked. All he is doing is prolonging the retirement of the seniors while not bringing any new ones into the fore. Not going to the young ones competitions is not a good message of support. Iordache, Ponor and Izbasa don't seem to work cohesively as a team and don't seem to like each other too much and they can't compete forever.
Andreea, you are gorgeous! What a beautiful soul you were in 2000!
❤️❤️❤️ Chapeau! O gimnasta de nota 10, frumoasa si inteligenta❤️🤗!
