One of the earliest (pre-BIRTH) jobs that Kanada had was being the key animator on the 2nd half of the 44-episode series of GAIKING. The insanely obvious change in anime character and layout design when this shift occured was a desperate bid by the studio to save the show; a move which likely worked and got Kanada noticed in a big way.
Omgggg I first saw this back in the late 80s and I’ve never forgotten it. I was just watching it last night. Also a huge fan of the OST. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
I like the main girl's full red riding suit. It looks like the shape of her body was cut out to reveal pure red under-paper and it's mesmerizing in just how much the show COMMITS to it as an image. It's not easily forgotten at least.
I always refered to trigger styled animation as western styled animation where deformations and overshoots are favored to convey more dynamic movement as opposed to eastern animation where anatomical accuracy and staying on model is favored more
Saw Birth decades ago when it was dubbed in English as Planet Busters. Knew there was something... "very special" about it. What a genius he was. Oh, Kanada!
Awesome to see Kaneda get a chance to shine with his unique blend of amazing movement and pizzas with its execution! Absolutely monumental for all fans of ' The Gainax Style' and Obari's muse! Thank you for the coverage!!!
Came to see why it looked so much like Nausicaa. Well I guess that makes sense!! Thanks for the insight - never heard of him or knew this style had a name/lineage.
I love this anime! I picked it up for $10 at a second-hand store years ago just because I liked the box art. It was one of the best impulse buys I ever made.
First time I saw a version of Birth was one saturday morning on AFKN back in the early 90s. It was the Harmony Gold dub. But it was using "The World of the Talisman" as the title. I think they renamed it to Planet Busters afterwards.
Thank you! I have been listening to Birth soundtrack for probably the last 5-6 years now but never seen it cause of the reviews. So it was nice to hear someone opinion about it that werent bad!
Flying Bark Studios in general is very good with this. Their Lego Monkie Kid cartoon has great stylistic animation that has only vaguely heard of a model sheet.
@@SlapstickGenius23 Very unlikely. 🙂 I have a copy of the this dub recorded from an original vhs tape, and i'm sure i can't be the only one who owned one.
This was an enlightening video. In the event that you do a video on Nora, you should talk to Kenny Lauderdale about it. He most likely has quite a bit to say about it.
Thanks you, I had this on VHS as a kid and watched many times but had no idea what it was called or how to find it. Its frantic style really gelled with my adhd brain as a kid. Im not even much of an anime fan but your documentarys are fascinating to watch.
I wish, more animators in America, adapt to every animating style as the Japanese and put their spin on it. I'll do it myself, but I'm not a animator and I don't draw much.
11:37- Wait, so the visage of Arlia appears in the OP of another show - but she's not a simple background character, she's the visual centerpiece of that shot. If this appearance is exclusive to the opening, does that mean that that shot has no real context tying it to the anime proper?
This channel is so, so special to me. I always await with excitement the next video because it's always an enlightenment to watch it. Your videos are always impressive and your reviews on point. Thank you for so much.
Man I love Birth! Something about it's zany metaphysical vibe really resonates with me. It's trippy as all back with some fascinating if understated cosmic ideas and an irresistible stream of Looney Tunes humour. Plus that Hisaishi soundtrack is outstanding. It also doesn't hurt that I've always thought Rasa was hella cute.
You're absolutely right! Their own research was an essential part in helping make this video. Added a works cited in the description with them and other sources I used. Thank you for reminding me!

I bought both dvd and vhs last year. I think i got the dvd for 20 something bucks new and I paid more for the planet busters vhs. I think planet busters is on youtube. Unofficially ofcourse
Incorrect. God, I get so tired of hearing idiots complain about Steven Universe. They're not "errors" god dammit. Action has nothing to do with drawing your characters in the most pleasing way possible for a particular shot. Anyone who thinks that is art illiterate on a basic level. Everyone who keeps whining about this are all morons who don't understand what animation as an artform even is. It's just pedantic complaints from fundamentally untalented people who couldn't draw or layout motion themselves if their lives depended on it who want to PRETEND to have something smart or critical to say even if they have NO idea what they're talking about on any fundamental level. The end.
Jesus christ, imagine this kind of pedantic bullshit when people look back at Spumco. You'd get nothing but people saying Ren and Stimpy was overrated because Ren doesn't even have his tail in every shot. Stupid people. Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid people who wrongly believe they are entitled to an opinion, when they're just idiots.
On model is overrated, this criticism fails to acknowledge how integral having multiple storyboarders was to making SU visually compelling. It’s not an issue, people just use it to try and justify their weird anti-SU feelings
@@j.2512 That’s your opinion friend, plenty of us don’t think SU is ugly. I think AOT is ugly but if I tried to state it I’d get bomb threats. It’s not out of incompetency nor is it as purposeful as “style”, it just *is* because they used different story boarders. You’re trying to die on this hill because you don’t like SU, so I really… don’t care about this opinion, probably similar to how you don’t care about mine. Maybe you should find something that makes you less angry and actually makes you feel positive to go comment about. Just seems like your day would be nicer.
I BOUGHT this 20 years ago, watched it...boy did I hate it! It was in fact my most hated anime of all time. Stoner films just aren't my thing. Now I'm curious if I would get more out of it. But daaaaaaaaaaaang is this movie ever slooooooooooooooooooow. It's the slowest moving anime I've ever seen. I mean I couldn't finish it. After like 45 mins I just started fast forwarding to see if anything ever happened. No. Not really. Kind of a "slow chase" movie. DEFINITELY made on drugs.

True, we do usually associate this style of animation with studios who specialize in this style of animation.
Ah, as an animator I always wondered where this started in anime. Thanks!

I was just watching Rise of TMNT, which used similar animation techniques.
Flying Bark Studios in general is very good with this. Their Lego Monkie Kid cartoon has great stylistic animation that has only vaguely heard of a model sheet.
There is a Harmony Gold dub of this film, and largely uncut, though in the UK it was released as 'World of the Talisman'.

Why would you want western animators to copy Japanese animators? Each should be free to do their own thing.
They do. You see SO many animators in America now constantly proclaiming their inspirations as being so many classic anime works.
Watch The 2021's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles And LEGO Monkey Boy. They are a good reference to western Trigger style
Peter Chung is influenced by Kanada-san's style
This is going on the list. Looks vintage and I always enjoy retro anime

I recall that Birth magazine cover: 1983 or so, maybe, 84 or 85, At Forbidden Planet in NYC.
'Mospeada' is pronounced 'Moe-Speed-Ah'. It's a portmanteau of 'Motor Speeder', in reference to the show's titular motorcycle-based mecha.
