I dont think so. Yesterday when i fought with very good pilot in 190 - he tried to avoid my attack to pull up, he lost speed but i missed , than when i tried to escape łów over ground , he almost hit me cause he meded turn by rudder, but when he realized that his speed was too low to łów over ground - IT was too łatę for him to gain speed and he hit ground.
The thing about the nose cannons is that they do not have to be “converged”. Wing mounted cannon, being mounted much further apart were aimed a bit crosseyed so they would converge at some arbitrary distance forwards. It meant that there was a very sweet spot distance at which the bullets would all hammer the same thing. When firing further than the convergence distance groups would spread out and target effect would considerably worsen. Initial convergence settings were too far. Military analysts were too optimistic as to the marksmanship of pilots so they anticipated longer range fires. Veteran pilots would get their techs to decrease convergence distance because they understood that they were more likely to be firing at closer distances where time on target would be shorter so they really wanted to pour on the lead on a smaller spot. The P-38’s nose mounted cannons were clustered close to each other so they did not have to be converged. They could dump a pile of concentrated lead at any distance which made them really effective.
With American fighters, the convergence distance was set to 400 yards. But they didn't all hit the same exact place. Every firearm puts bullets into a certain-sized circle at a given distance. What they would do is overlap but stagger those cones at 400 yards to give the best mix possible of maximizing both damage potential and hit probability.
The P-38 was the first model aeroplane I built back in the early 90's, my dad bought it for my birthday as it first flew on the same day (27th January). Fantastic looking aircraft with an interesting history.
@@renatoigmed Interesting! I think mine was an Airfix (sadly destroyed long ago-I must have been around 8 and so once construction and painting was complete I played with it too much!).
One of my first memories' back in the day was of my dad flying his RC model of the p-38 "YIPPEE". I am designing one on the computer now... Haven't decided on a size yet, but it will be big... 😁
I built my model of the P38 in 1958 or 1959. Always have loved that design! I got to touch a real one several years ago at the Palos Verdes Concourse when we combined the show at the Torrance Airport with vintage aircraft. You guys may know the plane, stationed at the Chino CA Air Museum. What a beauty!
The survivability of the P-38 was legendary. Zeroes would empty all their ammunition trying to take one down, only for it to limp away with a single engine, or both engines completely functional. "Winning by default" is the best way to win in a Lightning. Such a beautiful aircraft. Not the most maneuverable fighter but it was incredibly stable and had a tremendous payload for a fighter-bomber.
@@Ambaryerno Yeah with the electrically-motivated control surfaces, the P-38L became an actually viable dogfighter, which is surprising given how heavy it was, but that's the brainchildren of Kelly Johnson for ya! They performed miracles.
8:33 actually gave me anxiety, something about the 109's determination was unnerving, just watching it get the perfect lineup and waiting to shoot you out of the sky
9:04 - This 109 pilot really went full on *_"Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition!"_* mode. 300 rounds per MG and 65-200 rounds for the cannon depending on variant and he held the trigger down like he was in a paint shop at Ford factory.
Being the age that I am, the closest to this I had as a kid was aces over Europe and aces over the Pacific. And you had better bet I spent hundreds. If not, possibly thousands of hours flying every aircraft I could, but absolutely loving my time in a p-38 in both Europe and the Pacific.
Howdy GS from an old AF Vet. Been following a while now and finally subscribed. gotta say I love seeing more IL-2 content. That's where I hang out most of the time. I found your "Play the hand..." video far more relatable than PNJ (Pointy Nosed Jet) vs PNJ. Made me ponder.....Lagg-3 vs BF-109K mayhaps..hmmm? Runway ahead & altitude below!🛩
I do believe that scaring a bomber into crashing into another counts as a maneuver kill, along with the 109 that pancaked into the runway. Also it's well known that the P-38 was a very rugged plane. In most cases even more than the P-47.
That paratrooper kill? Yikes. I just took advantage of the sale on steam and am downloading IL 2 rn. Thanks to you and the channel Im totally hooked on DCS and all thinks flight sim lol. Merry Christmas Sir.
The level if detail they put in the p-38 is impressive. At 13:30 you can see the nose gear oleo working through the engine nacelle mirror (polished oval).
Ha! That 109 sure showed you! He found a way to both keep his energy AND come down & get you! That's one way to learn about aerodynamic compressibility I guess 🤣
Unreal that P38 was still controllable after both engines were hit and smoking. I would have thought you’d jump since you were over liberated France. Also the brake noise as you got on and then released the brakes on the runway was awesome. 👏🏻👍🏻
The fact that the 109 who shot you ultimately crashed as you were landing, while trying to kill you, means that it looks like you won that engagement lmao. We count those :)
What a super cool bunch of engagements. That 109 had some beef; crazy stuff. I indeed had no idea the P-38 had a yoke! I recently got a Thrustmaster TCA Yoke and now can't wait to try it out on the P-38.
Seriously not expecting that 109 to kamikaze trying to take you out. Send like an odd choice for the computer to make, but then I guess it is supposed to be simulating a person, and people can make bad calls. Tough call whether my favorite warbird is the P-51 or the P-38, so I'm always glad to see the Lightning get some love. Thanks!
Love the WW2 content. Keep up the good work. As an informational note regarding the P38's armament. Yes, the guns were exceptionally accurate due to them firing directly down the center line of the aircraft (no convergence distance sighting necessary). In regard to the 4 x .50 calibers' hitting power...they were effective guns but in all models of the P38 they were "assisted" by the addition of a single Hispano 20mm cannon 🙂. I believe this is modeled accurately in IL2.
If you plan on flying more of the 38, it has a combat flap setting that is really useful if you need the extra turn performance. The flap design in the combat settings create a lot of lift with a lot less drag than other planes of the era.
I was getting myself ready to see GS get shredded into Swiss cheese when he was landing and then Franz dumped his 109 into the tarmac. 😅 I did not see that coming but nonetheless, it was an awesome ending.
with the P38, all 4 .nose mounted 50 cals hit the same sweet spot. NTM the 20 mm cannon, too. Versus wing mounted guns. their convergence point was usually about 200 meters out. So that's quite a few wasted rounds that never hit the target.

L39 vs aermacchi common buddy it's been a year I have been asking for this ultimate fight of two trainers
Can you do a P-38 vs Mosquito dogfight?
Here's my question. If you are inverted and eject when you're too close to the ground do you bounce or splat?
GS: He'd be pretty foolish to give up all his energy and come down here.
109: Hold my beer.
109: "Hi my name's Foolischnietzel."
Kept all his energy AND came down lol
Google translate says a German saying that would sound like "Halte mein Bier!"

That’s the correct translation.
"You know what would ACTUALLY be foolish?"
That last Bf-109 was the epitome of target fixation. Nothing matters but the kill, and then you smack the ground full speed.
That last 109 must’ve been a war thunder player
They were too used to a FlaRakRad shooting them down at prop tier, so they simulated a FlaRakRad shooting them down.
One that I shot down with an actual DIVE BOMBER?
Need to find out who he is and bring him on the channel, what a beast lol...would have been epic if he had rammed the 38 on final approach lol....
