This is truly awesome, this is true jazz from the wizardry of the musicians, the intimacy of the venue and the chemistry of them all - pure unadulterated jazz!
Thanks for the 2nd opinion! I thought that my be Ron Carter, but didn't really see a clear shot of him. All these cats are way too cool. Chuck & Maynard were both favorites of mine in High School when I was playing trumpet/flugel on a daily basis, but their styles are so different, I never expected to see them together! ***** ~R
When you comp as great as Herbie does here, who needs solo? Together w. Ron Carter and great Billy Higgins on the drums he helped to create that smooth feeling in a rhythm section the soloists could build on.
wow, this was a really interesting video. Both Maynard and Al hirt showed some nice chops, and mangione definitely showed a nice twist on the song, but Dizzy and Sarah both captured the essence of the song. Dizzy was truly in a league of his own.
I love Maynard and have seen him at least 30 times but when it comes to technique no one can top Big Al Hirt.He can play it all from Jazz to Dixieland ,Symphony and everything in between.
That was really cool a bunch of top class musicians up there. Im not much of a scat fan but that was still good, I think maynard had try not to play high lol jk, he plays way different without his bigband lol, and im not much of a chuck fan but he is still and al was definatley the most technical here and doesn't want to be called a jazz musican he just wants to be called a musician
my god!! what a band... Ron Carter on bass... Herbie on the piano? psss.... most of the solo, suck... it's not a piece to solo the 'Take the A Train", but... musicality and value, i bow in front of you!
WTH?! amazing trumpetplayers on stage! But then suddenly a quick flash of a musician, which hasn't been named yet! It's Herbie Hancock at his piano! why doesn't he play a solo? :(
I like Al Hirt's jazz playing better than Dizzy's. Cleaner, and better, well developed ideas. Plus he was a great ligit player. He was very underrated.
This wasn't a competition!! Everyone of those guys are great at what they did/do. How can you compare MF to Chuck or Dizz? Oh..MF was still on his game in the 80s. Spent at this time of his life???? Give me a break!!
To say putting awesome players on stage and saying "go" doesn't work, just ask miles Davis how it worked. I would say it went rather well, and he was famous for just bringing sketches to the studio.
Man..we sure have lost alot of greats in the past couple of decades. This stage was loaded with legends!
It's mind-blowing that folks you think are diffent species, actually know & like each other . . . and performed together!!
This is terribly cool.
Wow, what a treat to see all these guys on the same stage jamming. Each player in their own right contributed, all having fun. Thanks for sharing!
lots of legends up there on stage. incredible.
This is truly awesome, this is true jazz from the wizardry of the musicians, the intimacy of the venue and the chemistry of them all - pure unadulterated jazz!
Wow! I never knew all these guys were ever on the same stage together...what a trumpet summit... it just doesn't get any better than this!
WOW! What a gem! This is a treasure. Thanks for adding it.
All these guys play so differently and are great in there own right!! Thanks for posting!
Damn you got these trumpet legends Chuck Mangione, Maynard Ferguson, and Dizzy Gillespie!!!!
Thanks for the 2nd opinion! I thought that my be Ron Carter, but didn't really see a clear shot of him. All these cats are way too cool. It's great to see all these greats together! Thanks for the post!
OMG, so many good trumpetplayers at the same time.
It is around 1987. It originally aired on March 22 on Cinemax.

Impresive array of jazz greats!!
I have to watch this beautiful clip
at least once a day.
wow great playing all around
wow, this was a really interesting video. Both Maynard and Al hirt showed some nice chops, and mangione definitely showed a nice twist on the song, but Dizzy and Sarah both captured the essence of the song. Dizzy was truly in a league of his own.

Just Listen to the Virtuosity of Al Hirt.....!!!!

The language is Scat.
And Sarah Vaughan Scat is Beautiful.
Nice line up!
This is Music!
Is this commercially available? I take it this is from an HBO special. Is it all like this? I would LOVE to get my hands on this.
Sarah digs chucks vibe....I do too!
al hirt makes you sit up and say-- who is that-- such a strong ability......
Don Cherry is the shit!!!!
the legends of the horn. wow
THAT SASS MAKE ME LAUGH,..I LOVE THE WAY SHE SHIFTS FROM ONE PLAYER TO THE NEXT. FUNNY INTRO WITHOUT WORDS
I always miss Don Cherry.
Historic!
chuck mangione my musical idol
Don't forget Herbie Hancock on piano :)
I love Maynard and have seen him at least 30 times but when it comes to technique no one can top Big Al Hirt.He can play it all from Jazz to Dixieland ,Symphony and everything in between.

I was kidding. It sounds like some exotic alien language...perhaps from Mars?
Dizzy's playing is in a class of its own at 4:27-4:40, So beautiful.
I wish I could of been here
is this the same night that Maynard sang I Can't Get Started with Al Hirt playin the horn?
Maynard Ferguson is playing at 2:00.
I don't know why the author of this clip doesn't mention Maynard.
ConnCollector Maynard is mentioned in the description.
Al Hirt is sooo good---ahead of the others...

I know it's not a competition, but damn, Dizzy sure did kick Chuck to the curb!
Chuck 4:10! digging it...loving this clip
my god!! what a band... Ron Carter on bass... Herbie on the piano?
psss....
most of the solo, suck... it's not a piece to solo the 'Take the A Train", but...

😀🌿🤗💞💜
What language does she sing?

MAYNARD FURGESON! Enough said.
Two bigg bubbas, that can PLAY
@jannokas85 you call that a question?
I'll assume you are kidding, but just in case you're not, she is scat singing.
What year did this performance take place?
1987
I like Al Hirt's jazz playing better than Dizzy's. Cleaner, and better, well developed ideas. Plus he was a great ligit player. He was very underrated.
increíble, todos mis trompetistas favoritos.
bueno, exepto Maynard Ferguson... el no sabe tocar.
This wasn't a competition!! Everyone of those guys are great at what they did/do. How can you compare MF to Chuck or Dizz? Oh..MF was still on his game in the 80s. Spent at this time of his life???? Give me a break!!
@SAAMIAM99 you are crazy

Quit stealing all my good lines, TeckEd
YOU GO MAMA
Al they needed was miles davis.
Wow all those trumpets and no interpreter.
WTF
DAYum Sarah Vaughan plays scat trumpet better than these guys, ON THIS GIG.
I'm not sayin nothin. Just this time around, she kicks them's asses.
I love scat, but I'm not so into her in this either. No disrespect intended, it just feels a little... forced.
Unfortunately Chuck is out of his element. I love his music, but his playing leaves a lot to be desired.
