The Origins of the American Public Education System: Horace Mann & the Prussian Model of Obedience

  • The American Public Education System was directly imported from Prussia (modern day Germany). This model of "free and compulsory" education was designed by the Prussian Emperor, in order to generate obedient workers and soldiers who would not question his authority.
In the 1830's, American Lawmaker Horace Mann visited Prussia and researched its education methodology. He was infatuated with the emperor's method of eliminating free thought from his subjects and designed an education system for Massachusetts directly based on these concepts. The movement then quickly spread nationally.
Horace Mann said, "The State is the father of children." Do you want your children growing up in total submission to the State?

I would think--that a better argument for why we are behind, is found in our constitution, that does NOT direct a "public school system"--run by the government--it has no real motive to improve, to compete. If it's bad, it does not "go out of business", no, it just raises taxes, and keep on, keepin on. Yet, we keep voting for more government to fix problems the government by design, was never intended to perform.

Yes, that's part of it...but, how could Horace Mann forcast the self-serving debauchery of teachers unions and politicians? Remember, in his day, there was no such thing as teachers unions, income or even property taxes which created the endless stream of public money at all levels of government. Put that much money on any table and the thieves will assemble. The question today is: Now that you know, what can be done to reverse it? You can't beat something with nothing...and admitting defeat is the same as nothing to the one beating you with something, right?

This may help explain why Common Core is so troublesome when combined with US education. If our current system is designed to squash free, and critical, thinking and replace it with blind obedience, then it is no wonder that Common Core -- designed to promote critical thinking and questioning the evidence presented by others -- causes so much friction. You can't put a square peg in a round hole.

One of the worst things you can possibly do as a parent or legal guardian is send your kids off to public school. Montessori ruined any chances they had of breaking me, but they still had a major effect on me via social conditioning, but it always stuck out to me how broken the classroom physical model was, as well as the interpersonal dynamics between peers, junior school mates, and teachers. The only worse human conditions I have observed on earth have been in war.

"One of the worst things you can possibly do as a parent or legal guardian is send your kids off to public school."
Exactly. Public schools promote the propaganda of Black Lives Matter, which teachers children to disrespect the moral authority of police. (After hypocritically telling the employees that we do not talk politics at work) When children learn to disrespect the moral authority of police, they learn to disrespect the moral authority of their elders. When they learn to disrespect the moral authority of their elders, they learn to disrespect the moral authority of their schoolteachers. It is a completely self-destructive cycle.

Thanks for this video. The Monitorial System was way better than Mann's primitive, authoritarian model. Mann did such a disservice to so many generations, he's a criminal:
From Wikipedia on the Monitorial System:
The Monitorial System was an education method that became popular on a global scale during the early 19th century. This method was also known as "mutual instruction" or the "Bell-Lancaster method" after the British educators Dr Andrew Bell and Joseph Lancaster who both independently developed it. The method was based on the abler pupils being used as 'helpers' to the teacher, passing on the information they had learned to other students.[
1] The Monitorial System was found very useful by 19th-century educators, as it proved to be a CHEAP way of making primary education more INCLUSIVE, thus making it possible to increase the average class size. Joseph Lancaster's motto for his method was Qui docet, discit -- "He who teaches, learns."
    The Mannian Model:
In the late 19th and early 20th century in the United States and elsewhere, the monitorial method was abandoned in favor of the methods of Horace Mann, using the lecture model of direct instruction delivered to passive students grouped into classes by age, without regard to differences in aptitude. It created more jobs for professional teachers, and was sold as a better way to educate more students to a higher level, but was criticized for reducing the participation of students in educating themselves and one another, and increasing the modeling of behavior on age peers over that of adults.

I loved most of my teachers, but the bullying did not stop. I dealt with depression and loneliness most of high school. Thank God for my church and the youth group they had. I was not totally alone and I did have friends. That got me through the constant bullying. But knowing that public school was built to be mandatory, definitely does not sit well with me. The education is truly not free. Our kids are having to pay for it with their own mental health.

There is an interesting side note: When talking about education in schools, the German language has a specific word for it - Bildung, which is derived from the word for picture, image, and would translate into something like forming. It means that the child is supposed to form themself (or be formed into, that was an earlier way of thinking) into an adult. The meaning of the word is usually limited to the school system and excludes stuff like life experiences or what you learn from parents.
English only has the word education to describe all of it.
So it might be possible that because of this difference in language, some stuff might have been lost in translation when implementing it in the US.
Also, the map is really incorrect; Prussia de facto took over Germany in 1871. However, before that, most of it consisted of independent small states with no real federal government to speak of.

Nothing was lost in translation, this was done on purpose, this was created to break the will of children and to teach them to conform, follow instructions without question, remember, you had to ask permission to go to the bathroom, to speak, etc. They actually created schools to look like prisons, long hallways, bells, to tell you when and where you should be, and they purposely kept children at school for most of the day so they would have less time with their families, so this was done to control and brainwash children so the government can control them as adults, the governments motto is "keep the common man down (sick/dumb), but able to work,... for us"....

The Prussian school model was excellent. It didn't make the student only obey, but the standard of education was the highest in the world.
Students from other countries who wanted to go to school in Germany, had to speak German, they had to be excellent in math and German grammar. Not too many children from abroad were able to reach these standards.
The educational system went broke in the Weimar Republic (1919-1933).
As Hitler came to power he rejuvenated the educational System. The result: Germany poured out of their schools, the smartest people on "Planet Earth."

No. It's what modern American educators have been saying for many decades in a subtle, sly manner, but in recent years, as we can see, it is now all out in the open. And what about John Dewey ? What about Lenin ? This short video mentioned the conquered South. Well, several years before the CW, a few southern members of Congress were approached by a northern colleague who warned his southern counterparts, 'You gentlemen had better go home and beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears, because there are a million northern schoolmarms who are teaching their young students to kill you." How much worst are conditions now, Moms and Dads ?

I love this video and I think it is fulled with valuable knowledge and good editing, the quality is a bit low but it is still a great video. I think you should remake it / re upload it in higher quality (pixels, 240p is kind of low). This is a very big topic in the United States right now and i think it would be very good if you made a video on the topic to convince more people to speak up. I think that this is a very interesting way of looking at the debate because i haven't and most people haven't heard much about the history of the system.

Wow I just got to the end of the video and I can't believe it! Shocking twist their. Right now it's hard to be Jewish and not to despair that anti-Semitism seems to be everywhere. On another note I remember when I was in kindergarten I almost failed kindergarten because the test that we were given was to do a coloring page and all we had to do was follow directions but I didn't know that that was the purpose of the test. They told us to outline the figure on the page and then to color it in and I thought to myself you know in nature things don't have lines and I'm not trying any. So I proceeded to color within the lines that were already on the page and I thought that I did a great job because I stayed within the lines. I didn't follow directions so I almost failed kindergarten. This video makes that situation make more sense.
I can't help it! This video is about the history of education and the narrator is using words in an educated way but I'm also realizing that our language is changing. At about minute 1:30 the narrator starts describing people going and coming from North America to Germany/Prussia. The going and coming part is what's very skewed because the word calm or came is used no matter which direction the people are going or coming from. I have noticed with a lot of millennials this part of our language has completely changed. There is seemingly no difference between going and coming and bringing and taking and I don't know directional type of words they have seemingly lost part of their meaning. It seems like a American English is no longer going to have that distinction and they're going to either pick come or go as the word of just moving or traveling from one destination to another regardless of direction going away from or coming torward. I just have to accept it.

From _The Seventh Annual Report of the Board of Education, together with the Seventh Annual Report of the Secretary of the Board_ (1844), page 22: "In the first place, the evils imputed to it [the Prussian educational system] were easily and naturally separable from the good which it was not denied to possess. If the Prussian schoolmaster has better methods of teaching reading, writing, grammar, geography, arithmetic &c., so that, in half the time, he produces greater and better results, surely, we may copy his modes of teaching these elements, without adopting his notions of passive obedience to government, or of blind adherence to the articles of a church."
From this, it sounds like perhaps Mann wasn't on board with the worst parts of Prussian educational methodology. Sadly, those are still what we wound up with in the modern day. I agree with others here who say that small reforms to our educational system aren't going to fix the problem.

Administration and teachers push critical thinking and independent learning but the educational system is not geared to that. That's why more students graduate knowing nothing and not being able to make good decisions. Then they go to a 4 year college and for 2 of those years now have to pay for the crap that they learned for free in high school. they don't get to be in their field except for 2 years of their education. This country was built from the colonial times on entrepreneurship and mentorship you studied in a field with a master as an apprentice and that's how you made a living and that's the way it should be. except for doctors.

This video is very decietful. "While Prussian (military) drill in the times before had been about obedience to orders without any leeway, Fichte asked for shaping of the personality of students. The citizens should be made able and willing to use their own minds to achieve higher goals in the framework of a future unified German nation state."
Fichte was not what you make him out to be, and openly objected the idea or replacing free will and true intellectualism with national loyalty and obedience. Please read about the people in this video and their ideas yourself. If you do not question it, you are not pursuing true education.

The higher classes constitute the mind of the single large whole of humanity; the lower classes constitute its limbs; the former are the thinking and designing [Entwerfende] part, the latter the executive part."
"The new education must consist essentially in this, that it completely destroys freedom of will in the soil which it undertakes to cultivate, and produces on the contrary strict necessity in the decisions of the will, the opposite being impossible. Such a will can henceforth be relied on with confidence and certainty."
