      The problem with MLMs is that people sign up thinking they're going to make their living by selling the product, when actually, you make the money by recruiting and training other salespeople in your downline. It's a totally different skillset.

    • @chukuemekaoje1015
      @chukuemekaoje1015 Год назад +28

      @@ASimoneau That's also what makes it a pyramid scheme. You're recruiting salespeople below you, who then recruit other salespeople below them, who then recruit other salespeople people below them, and so on.
      Why? Cause the commissions are earned as a percentage of both your immediate downline, and a percentage of each downline below that. So the goal ends up being to build a big downline to maximize commission.
      As for sales, very little retail and the sales likely 1) sales to maintain rank and/or 2) to load up on "garage certified" inventory cause that's what your upline wanted.

My wife also wanted to get into an MLM (Mary Kay) when we were first married and had no money. I told her, politely, that the only way I would agree to it was if she ran the "business" with its own profits - in other words, she had to keep it separate from our regular budget and my paycheck (she was still in college). She agreed, did some stuff on the side, never really made much of anything, and eventually gave it up.

They are: they brainwash the associates to spend money. you are only one training away from making it. I disagree, the wife might not be motivated by greed. Just that she _can_ make it, be successful, have sales and a team and a nice car to show for. MLM's are very good in convincing their associates that it is _their_ fault, if they are not succeeding. They are too lazy, not disciplined enough, if only they would follow the recipe (which of course includes expensive courses and buying up and stocking whatever crap they sell. So they will meet monthly targets.

      I would be willing to bet that MLM works for those who actually have sales skills. I believe that the MLM marketing tries to make a person believe they have sales skill w/o ever having tested that out before in their lives. If someone I knew wanted to go into MLM, I would advise them to buy a little of some other type of product and sell that product first before they consider MLM because the skill should be there before you make a huge financial commitment. If they say "What about college? Don't people make a huge financial commitment with education?" Okay, you got a point there but the smart move with education is to pay for education debt free because you don't know the future.

But yeah I never heard that and I do not have any connection to any leaders in Mary Kay who would recommend that.
      Our seminars with hotels and flights aren't even CLOSE to being $10,000, either. They put on a HUGE show for all of us and provide us with high-quality training and it's only a little over $200 for entry for 4 days. Hotel flights etc are all extra of course but you get a cheap flight, you split your hotel room, you can go to Mary Kay Seminar on a budget, probably like $1,000-1,500. I could not imagine going $10,000 into debt for training. Weekly meetings with directors are free to $5 a week. Calls with your director are free. Training videos are free. The local career conferences are $100 for a weekend plus one night in a hotel (that again you can split with people). There is no excuse for charging $10,000 for that stuff.

No hard figures, no details on how the program worked, nothing you could analyze anyway. But plenty of "picture yourself a year from now, living the dream, vacation home, etc., or stuck in your dead end job if you don't act now" BS. @@pep590the only difference between an mlm and a pyramid scheme is plausible deniability.
      MLMs can at least say they have a product/service to sell... but rarely do people doing MLMs actually sell that product outside their upline/downline.
      The name of the game in MLM is to continually build/replenish your downline (convert any customers to "team members")... hence, they're pyramid schemes.

    If the person who sent this in is who I think it is, the husband is in the right. The wife is an abuser, very controlling, and the husband has repeatedly filed for divorce but her friends/family kept guilting him into going back by using the fact she can't (won't) support herself. He's not allowed to leave the house except for work or taking their kids to water polo training/games. The marriage is dead, but she refuses to let it go.
    EDIT: It was who I thought it was. The wife is presently trying to suck up to the husband today. And just more info - they have been going to various marriage counsellors for a decade, so advising them to go to a marriage counsellor is funny. Their sons are also 17yrs old and going to college next year, and there is no/minimal college fund. The wife has admitted to being a narcissist and frequently cheated on her husband.

    I agree with a lot of Dave's advice, but he just pointed out one of my biggest issues with him. He very specifically said he has knowingly never taken the money from a broke person to attend his conference. He chooses to be oblivious to the fact that he is selling things to a target audience that is broke, and grasping at their last straw for a reprieve. Be it $10 for a book, or $10,000 for a conference. He chooses to believe, because no one ever told him otherwise, that his money is not made off the backs of people who are desperate and broke.
