This line had us on our feet: "I hope [my mom] has in her hands the scariest-looking 'assault weapon' weapon she can find, so that we can both be confident in her ability to end the threat."
This is exactly what I want to yell at the politicians every single day even bigger factor is we are farther away from Town then most people are not all but most in South Dakota plus what is one police officer going to do against eight guys?
I loved the part about an AR15 in the hands of a cop being a self defense weapon but it is an ASSAULT WEAPON when citizens use them!!!!
I've been thinking this for a while - ask yourself: what is the biggest difference between a weapon such as an AR-15 and a semi-automatic "hunting" rifle? One looks scarier than the other. And that's pretty much it. And if MY mother were confronted by armed criminals, I'd much rather she have a scary-looking weapon in hand, with the hope that even just SEEING that she has it is enough to convince the criminals to turn and run away, without mom even firing a shot.
@@Alphi71 - Exactly! These have been at least two studies by the CDC that showed that _legal_ defensive use of a firearm has been used 750k - 3 million times a year and many of those go unreported, because no shots were fired. Simply put the scarier the better for self defense!

What she isn't quoting and what needs to be determined is how many people have access to handguns vs semi-automatic rifles. If it is 10x easier to pick up a handgun across the US (proportionate gun purchases per household) and they account for 2/3rds of mass shootings, that doesn't add up.
I say per household because some may want a collection of rifles while others may simply have a handgun, rifle, or shotgun for home defense and I believe that people who buy collections of firearms are more likely to buy rifles than handguns when possible (because they look cooler/scarier most of the time.) Honestly, the legislation needed for gun control has nothing to do with the type of firearm purchased and more to do with secure background checks and psychological profiling on people who have firearms. Firearms should not be available to people who have severe antisocial-personality disorders or those suffering from depression. Honestly, I wouldn't be typing this if I had access to a firearm when I was 19. I almost killed myself with a knife, but with a handgun, I know I would have. With a knife you stay alive for minutes after you stab or cut yourself and I figured dying was supposed to end the pain, not make it as bad as possible for minutes before my nerves finally give out from oxygen depravation. Guns trivialize this. Make sure you hut the brain and thats it. For suicide, the only better ways are nitrogen or carbon monoxide poisoning where you simply go to sleep and never wake up and lethal injection of strong painkillers where you would die horribly painfully, but you can't feel it.
Back to the main point, its not about what firearms should be available. The whole point of the second amendment is that the American people can stand against a corrupt government and I believe that capability is genuinely important. (Actually I personally would go further, madating that there be caches of weapons made available to every municipality including anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles to be opened on an 80% majority vote in the municipality and that everyone spends 5 months in a basic training course to teach them how to use these weapons and teach proper discipline and self respect. Not as far as forcing everyone to spend 2 years in the reserves, but maybe after the course, they spend a year or two in general government service building roads and whatnot) I would make sure that the people have the right and capability to protect themselves from corruption in no uncertain terms, which would also make the people the single best equipped militia on the planet in case of some insane person attemtping an invasion. Im not campaigning here, its just what I think.

April Moore I agree with you wholeheartedly. The problem is, if you read the 2nd Amendment, any carry is legal. Existing gun laws are counter to the 2nd Amendment, “shall not be infringed” means if I chose to open carry, I can. Because I value my freedom, I will apply for my carry permit. But I will do so under protest because a permit means “permission”. If I have to ask permission to exercise my rights, then they are not rights. This is my biggest problem with the current and proposed future of gun laws in the USA. I’m not trying to talk trash against you, please don’t see it that way.

@Mark Swarbrick red flag laws have a purpose, but not in their current form. The ability to take away firearms from a credible potential threat temporarily is a good idea. However, like a warrant, it should pass muster before a judge first. Police should be liable for both safe storage and maintaining the condition of any firearms taken. All firearms should be carefully inventoried, and if the owner requests, be held by a person who will both comply with not allowing the person access to them as well as be legally able to hold such weapons. Lastly, there should be penalties in place, both criminally and civilly, to handle false reports.

Yes, but legal guns are used occasionally by people who prior to events in question were law abiding citizens. Police having a tool to disarm a credible threat with probable cause is something I can support, provided the criteria I included above are a part of it.

Judging on peoples feelings would set bad president imo. Police can disarm with probable cause already, at least where i live in broken state of IL.

Those armed security are vetted and profiled to the max before carrying a weapon around public figures. The fact is the general public is not. The 2nd amendment was signed 245 yrs ago, if technology in another 100 years give gun owners a laser beam which evaporates a target on sight, would that be okay with the assault rifle supporters.

When my father was about 12 years old, a man attempted to break into the house. Being the closest to the door that the intruder was struggling against, my dad was the first awakened. He heard the noises and knew that someone was trying to break in. He went into my grandfather's closet and pulled out a rifle (not sure what type) and went to face the door. When the intruder got the door open, my dad cocked the gun. The sound alone made the intruder stop because he realized what was on the other side. He slowly backed away and ran off. My dad didn't have to fire a single shot. But the look or sound of one of these "scary" weapons, quite possibly saved my dad, his 4 brothers and sisters and both parents' lives.
Knowing that we have that constitutional right scares the dems so much . And for some reason they just cant get why it's crazy to ban stuff like that for us. The awful thing is now there throwing in just assault weapons into the mix without saying guns and that would be an even bigger deal if we lost that . We all need to fight next year come election time . So nothing like this can ever happen . God bless everyone hopefully we can get past this .

When I was younger my dad told me when I wanted a gun to protect myself, he said do not get a .22, because if that man is bigger than you he can still up and come after you. So I bought a shot gun. They weren't making the ones she was taking about or I would have had one.
