efore a date with Paul the "wine guy", Monica is teased by her friends, Chandler and Joey, at The Central Perk coffee shop. Ross, Monica's older brother, arrives at the coffee shop, upset after discovering his ex-wife, a recently out lesbian, has moved out of his apartment to begin a new relationship with her partner. A young woman suddenly arrives wearing a wet wedding dress, whom Monica recognizes as her high school best friend, Rachel. Monica introduces her to the others as Rachel reveals she left her fiancé at the altar. After Rachel's father denies her financial assistance, Monica reluctantly takes Rachel in as a new roommate.
Meanwhile, Joey and Chandler console Ross while helping him assemble new furniture. Ross begins to wonder if any woman would be "the right one" for him. Monica goes on her first date with Paul, and while he seems decent and respectful, she discovers from a colleague that he has a bad reputation as a womanizer, ending her hopes that she will find a mate. Ross realizes that Rachel could be the beginning of a new hope for him. He successfully brings up the idea to Rachel of asking her out sometime, and later confesses to Monica about the potential relationship.
In the final scene, the entire group are in Central Perk having coffee with Rachel, who begins a new career as a coffee shop waitress.

Probably the most fascinating thing about this episode is how clearly Joey was intended to be the "cool" character of the bunch, when he ended up being the loveable buffoon. Every other character stayed true to their original concept.

Well, I think almost all of them went through subtle changes. Like Monica used to be kind of cool but as the seasons went on she became more neurotic. Ross was also kinder and more passive in the older seasons but he became more outrageous and petty as the seasons went on.
And to be fair, you see this sort of subtle characterization changes in most long running series. Certain traits come exaggerate if the audience likes them and other traits get forgotten if the audience doesn't like them. This is especially true when a show gets new writers who perhaps don't understand the nuance of a character as well as the original writers did.

Can't believe it. So many feelings rewatching this...
Specially when the show is again on TV, and I watch it every day. Now I am on the 8th season...then I watch this 1st season and I can perceive many changes on the characters, physically, mentally and emotionally. They still look like real people, not human cartoons of themselves...
But not only that...the music, the style, the warmth, the atmosphere is not the same...
Is Friends, but in a different way through all these years.
(oh, and now I know why I had a crush on Lisa Kudrow when I started watch the show for the first time; she's prettiest and cutest here than ever)

Imagine this: in 2024 or 2025, Joey (now an oscar winner who lives in Hollywood) buys the apartment where Monica and Chandler used to live and give it to the twins as a gift for what Chandler did for him when he was thriving to be an successful actor. They both move in and they realize that Emma has been living in Joey's old appartment (Joey gave it to her) with a roomate. Ben, who lives nearby with his fiancée, hangs out with them everyday and tey become the new six! 😍

OK, so this show launched in 1994 - the year when I was born. Most of the main characters are 25 years old at the beginning - the same age as I am in 2019, when I started to watch it for the very first time. Coincidence?
I'm at S10E10 now, still have a few episodes left, but I already see myself crying when it's going to be over.. such an iconic show

Producers Hired Perfect 6 actors! 👏👏 As this was their 1st time filming together not knowing each other but Their acting skills look as if they all known each other. Their onscreen chemistry clicked instantly!

Filipe Vinícius no, chandler was never in their high school. He was friends with Ross in college. That's how Chandler knows Monica and Rachel - through Ross!
Filipe Vinícius She only knew Chandler from Ross who was his College buddy and met each other at the Geller's Thanksgiving etc. Seen in the episode where it is revealed that Monica was responsible for Chandler losing his toe as she was trying to get revenge because he called her *fat* .
Rachel in her usual La La Rachel Land at that time, would have barely remembered Chandler that time. Knowing they also had not seen each other for at least 1 year before the wedding in the episode of the Flashback in season 3, and before that even 3/4 years maybe.
Retrospect pilot fuckups. Happens in many shows.
@@nikitagogoibaruah4744 That is true if you're referring to College during that party. But Rachel's character was written as drunk, so it was pretty meaningless. Their kiss in season 3 with the Flashback was also meaningless, as Chandler's character wasn't even written to acknowledge that Rachel's character had been fantasizing about him. And of course it was only a fantasy so to speak.

I can see them doing "Elderly Friends" like Aniston said one time, like in 10+ years or so. This way the perfectly closed out storyline wouldn't be hurt as they're afraid. Today, they're still young, and the era gap still pretty close, so the story would have to be unraveled pretty significantly to write something for this stage of their lives. But when they're old and retired life era, they can definitely write a nice story safely without ruining the original. I always get the sense that, old people are living a totally different life then their young selves for some reason, like my grandpa was always a grandpa, I could never imagine him anything but that, so there's a distinct gap that gives people almost like 2 lives. This is the stage where the directors can definitely pickup on and produce nice little light hearted, mini series or a movie, to give it a true closure some sort, because 'Friends' truly has a life on its own thats ongoing it seems.
