Airspace Bans, Leases Canceled, Partnerships Terminated: Russian Aviation Crushed

- Flight cancelations, airspace bans, sanctions, and more. Much of the aviation world has been turned upside down as a result of the ongoing situation in Eastern Europe. While the human toll is indisputably more important than anything to do with aircraft and airlines, we’ll do our best today to cover significant news over the past week as it relates to aviation and the situation in Ukraine. Let’s get started…

How pissed some of those passengers must have been just getting ready to land and you gotta go back to where you came from.
Well, you can imagine some half of them not wanting to be at the target airport anymore, so would wery wellcome the return...
the worst of it is: having to keep your 😷 on from time of boarding-arrival/touchdown at your destination
That's government logic with an infant brain.
A kudo for the very respectful reference to the human toll at 00:11 . Great channel, great videos
It’s sad the people who don’t want this war are amongst the worst affected.
Unfortunately it'd be worse to take direct action with your own military and further escalate the conflict. So far the next best alternative is convincing the adversary's domestic audience to revolt over the collapse of prosperity.
@@doujinflip they already have been doing that. That’s what makes it sad
@@doujinflip worst part is over there you revolt 9/10 the penalty is death
The Russian people need to stand up to Putin.
@@Matt-fl8uy they've tried and it hasn't gone very well...
Mentour Pilot did a video on his Mentour Now channel in which he projected the entire demise of Soviet Aviation. Besides the repossession of leased aircraft, he highlighted the impact of the spare parts ban. Since he is a pilot he was able to expand on the ripple effect of the sanctions. Airplanes require constant maintenance, and Aeroflot's main high-level maintenance facility is in Germany - they have no such equivalent in Russia. And even their own Russian-built airliners have Pratt & Whitney engines, which means that even those planes will soon suffer from the inability to replace key components in those engines. And, failure to maintain aircraft at regular intervals can result in de-certification from international agencies which would then prohibit those airplanes from flying international routes.
Mentour pilot takes forever to explain EVERYTHING. I always forget why I clicked on his videos half way thru them
@@charfras4767 It was on Mentor Now. I.e. shorter and less of storytelling style.
I have not checked, but with the fall of soviet unions, many Easterm-USA to Asia flights became possible due to the ability to fly over Russia (in particular NYC-Singapore). I have to assume these routes are no longer possible and curious to see how airlines such as Cathay, Singapore, United etc are coping with loss of that important polar route over Russia.
Cathay and Singapore Air wouldn’t be effected since their respective countries haven’t instituted Russian aircraft bans. If you look on FlightRadar24 nowadays it’s far more than just Russian aircraft over Russia. You just won’t see any aircraft from USA, Canadian, EU or other countries that have banned Russian planes.
@@TXnine7nine and to add to that, the major middle eastern carriers like Emirates, Ethiad and Qatar are also still operating direct Dubai/Doha to Sam Francisco/Los Angeles/Seattle route. They are polar routes, so typically go over Russia. Still operating.
Until they got shot like MH17
@@lemonflavorclorox7389 Not to forget Japanese airlines either, this is actually why it is still possible to book LHR-HND via British Airways. They have a codeshare with JAL and the Japanese flagged aircraft are still able to fly the route but BA of course cannot as Western Europe to Eastern Asia cut pretty much right through the middle of Siberia which is far far too large to avoid.
Cathay and Singapore took Neutral stance on this war. They would still be allowed to fly through Russia.
Most European Airlines would just copy Emirates flight paths instead, going down to Middle East before flying east to Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan or southeast to Singapore, Thailand, etc.
The flight time would be similar to Emirates flights minus the stopover time.
Wonder if Russian airlines will permanently loose their “slots” at some EU airports?
Very likely. I can see it happening.
Yea it is likely. I hope they do
You mean hubs? I guess so
Hopefully!
Russians have started to bomb neighborhoods and people indiscriminately. My guess this will happen soon.
Great details in a very fast changing situation. Thank You

The Antonov 225 Mriya's rapid unplanned disassembly broke my heart, but damages can be repaired. I would love if Ukraine repaired the Antonov 225.

of all the planes in the world, Mriya deserves to be in museum for her retirement, but to have her destroyed like this made me uneasy.... just wondering why Antonov/HeavyLift would not "rescue" her to safety when the tension was still on the rise, even airlines like Bees had more logic decision to store all its aircrafts before it's too late...

Fantastic issue
They canceled flights to Russia and closed their airspace to Russian flights.
Russia closed its airspace to all. The flights that turned back was due to this.
The odd thing is that most of these companies use Russian airspace to conduct travel through Asia. Some of these European companies are down 20% already and flight times and prices are only going to go up.
It seems odd but Russia is a big big piece of land and going around is a long long flight
Yes, but Russia charged a significant fee for allowing those flights to use Russian airspace to more directly connect between Europe and Asia. By closing their airspace it harms their economy as well.
Anchorage, in Alaska will be winner in this situation. Flights between Europe and Asia will be longer, but they will not be stopped. Meanwhile, with no maintenance and spare parts, flights within Russia would come to a halt.
@@alfastur6833 kinda. Some will now have to take connecting flights because carriers don't operate within the available regions. Slot if flights will be stopped because it's no longer economically sound, or safe for that matter because you're now going to be flying past zones with terrorist activity and some proper mountain ranges. Why did Aeroflot cancel flights to Mexico?
having no access to Canadian and US airspace make these flights difficult
@@welove2134 but what about the Pacific. They have 777s
@@BigPops757 they can but it will probably need to stop in like Vladivostok to refuel and even then avoiding US airspace is a pain
They can't use Canadian or US airspace. Along with the the EU ban, that prevents their use of almost the entire northern hemisphere besides their own airspace. EU nations and Canada control the Oceanic airspace in the North Atlantic. The US controls most of the airspace in the north Pacific.
In order to get to Mexico, while avoiding current airspace bans, they'd have to route south over the middle east and Africa, dip south of the equator to cross the Atlantic, then fly over Brazil.
@@welove2134 they’ll need navigation through US air traffic control to get to Mexico. Also because of Alaska, Guam and Hawaii the United States have a large chunk of the pacific under its control including the known flight path.
