This variant is called peeli daal or daal fry that we eat daily. Daal makhni is usually eaten on special occasions as it is so rich. I think for her it was not only a great change but also a great challenge also since she was only a little 7 years old Indian girl. She didn't know their language, never seen them. Accepting unknown people of different countries, of different languages, different appearances as parents was definitely a mental pressure for her. She didn't expressd it, faced the change bravely but it was a mental pressure for her. And maybe that's why she doesn't want to look back. Old memories will remind the old pain also.
Mayb it brings all pushed down memories from the subconscious. She now have a beautiful family.. parents brothers. It's wholesome. Tht phase was dark one she had none.

The old videos may bring back the scar of loosing a family, feeling insecured but not been able to express her feelings during her orphanage days. Seems now she has adjusted well into this family. Probably, Masoor Dal, it is Orangis red dal. It could also be the recipe. Each state has a unique recipe due to the availability of different spices in different parts.
