Offering fast growing leaves for herbivores early in season, food to a variety of pollinators with a relatively long blooming period ~ 8 weeks, seeds for birds, storing water for a variety of animals in between their perfoliate leaves - hence the common name: cup plant, Silphium perfoliatum can be a good to a native prairie habitat to cheer up your summer and wildlife.
It can become invasive, especially outside of its native range.
