How to remove BLACK BARS from video (Screen recording tips)

- In this tutorial I'll show you how to remove black bars from your videos when recording your screen using tools like Camtasia, ScreenFlow, OBS, or Screen-O-Matic.
WINDOW RESIZING BROWSER EXTENSIONS

EXPLANATION:
Black bars appear when the recorded video doesn't match the proportions of the video player used to reproduce it.
The most common video formats have a 16 by 9 aspect ratio, so if your recorded screen area doesn't match that aspect ratio, you will get the unsightly black bars.
Standard 16:9 high definition formats are 1280 by 720 (720p), 1920 by 1080 (1080p), and 3640 by 2160 (4K).
In this short tutorial, you'll learn a nifty trick to avoid those pesky black bars once and for all.

Do you know how to post process a zoom recording that has the speakers side-by-side so that each speaker is in a square window next to each other on a single 16:9 screen? I want to take some recordings where I was doing interviews and we were side-by-side and eliminate the black bars at the top and bottom, but to do this seems to require way to isolate the left and right images and then combine them into a single output stream. Thanks!
You would need to use video editing software (e.g. Camtasia, Premiere, Davinci Resolve, Clipchamp..) paste your Zoom recording in it, and then adjust it's size to fit inside a standard 16:9 HD frame.

Thanks for this! Do you know how to avoid the black bars of death when using an iphone to record on a zoom meeting? The meeting is 16x9 but my iphone records in 4x3 and I get the black bars whenever my iphone is the speaker. Is there a solution for this? Thanks!
I don’t know if a solution for that. Only for when you record your computer screen.

I’m not sure Ana. With iMovie is not possible to record your screen. This tutorial is only for screen recording apps like Camtasia or ScreenFlow. However, the only reason why you would get black bars is because whatever video you are editing in iMovie doesn’t match the proportions of the video you’re exporting which typically should be 16:9. Make sure your source video is in landscape mode and that it fills the entire video canvas inside your iMovie project.

I realized I didn't state my question accurately... the issue I am encountering in iMovie is that for some reason now the videos I record come up with those black lines on the side when I am going to edit them and I don't know how to change the ratio on the program for them to go away. Is this something that I can do in iMovie or I just can do so in Final Cut? Thank you!

Jay Singh Here are the steps:
1. Make sure your slide format is “wide” on Keynote
2. On ScreenFlow set the canvas size to 1920 by 1080
3. Record your Keynote presentation
4. Adjust the size of your screen recording layer inside ScreenFlow so it covers the entire canvas
5. Export video
