I´m assuming you´re from Europe like me and in my experience this really comes down to a difference in culture between the US and the EU, Germany especially in my case.
In my opinion in the US you get a lot less of jelousy if you are showing off your success compared to over here. Over here people are usually more of the mindset to hide the fact they´re doing well for themself to not attract too much of that jelousy from other people, while in the US this is much more acceptable to be showing what you got.

Sad truth is that in the US, every job is paid about 3 or 4 times the UK market, they have lower taxes than us,lower inheritance tax, lower everything... yes yes including MediCare, because anyone earning £50k+ in the UK pays around £14k to the NHS... so it is NOT free for the hard workers. Americans get paid more and their dollar goes a lot further. But, you may get one of them cars in the UK if you are a plumber, electrician, own a building company. $4k a year for that McLaren? I would guess UK insurance at £6k to £10k?

An implicit presumption of Matt was that everyone interviewed purchased their car with money made from working or from running a business. Supposing the money to buy the supercar came from your über-rich family, when asked what you did for a living, answering "insurance" would sound quite neutral, rather than the not-so-flattering "I actually don't do anything for a living, the car was purchased with money from my family trustfund".

I'm guessing the Silicon Valley company he works for has risen a lot in stock value that he's managed to make crazy amounts of money when he gets his stock awards. I was granted $400,000 in stock (paid out over 4 years) to about 6000 shares - so whenever I get my quarterly payout, the shares are of course worth way more if the company value has gone up. I assume it's what happened with this guy. At my income, I own a Convertible Corvette C8.
