Rewind to 2009: Survivor Katie Hall recounts the horrifying torture she endured at the hands of Phillip Garrido who - at the time - was recently discovered to have kidnapped Jaycee Dugard for nearly two decades. in 1976, Katie was abducted and raped after trying to do a good deed for a stranger.
A month after sharing her story with 60 Minutes, Katie faced her attacker in court at the Jaycee Lee Dugard hearing and in 2011, Phillip Garrido was sentenced 431 years to life in prison.

It stays with you, and i see a therapist and take meds to help with the flash backs and panic attacks but that sense of peace and safety is no longer there any more i'm wary of people, i look for the exits in the places i go to and make emergency plans in case of emergency situations. I carry a weapon with me whether it be a knife or something sharp, my innocence and peace of mind were stolen from me and i will never get that back, but i do advocate for us and try to look out for others and tell them my story so that they can be more vigilant.

In 3rd grade I was at church on a Wednesday night. My Dad was the pastor and all church members except 1 had left. I was alone in a sunday school room ironing a craft. Suddenly I glanced over my shoulder, not sure if I heard something or if it was instinct but at the window in the pitch black darkness, a man was crouched, he was sliding the window open, Ill never forget his red and white hat and his fingers under the edge of the window pushing it up. I instantly screamed and ran simultaneously. By the time my Dad and the last remaining church member ran outside and searched he was gone. At the time I was just mad cause I'd left the iron on my craft and ruined it. As a kid I soon forgot about it but one day as an adult I remembered that night and realized how close I came to something terrible. I know cause there were others nearby in the building whatever he was planning was not something he planned to do there. I came so close to being kidnapped and who knows what all else he was planning. Thank God I happened to glance behind me!

I cannot understand how those two sickos were able to get away with this depravity for so long.
One of the most tragic parts to this was Jaycee, this little naïve girl, living in tents in a backyard...suffering from traumatic sexual abuse while others her age were riding bikes & having sleepovers. Not only was she forced to deliver two babies, but she had them inside the tents without medical intervention.
With the tenacity of someone much older & mature, Jaycee raised them. She was only 11 years old but taught the girls rudimentary English & Math.
Each time I hear of this case, my heart breaks further. Nobody, absolutely nobody, should be subjected to something so devestatingly cruel.

Because it's obvious that they have RUINED their VICTIMS lives? No one EVER deserves this, & these low life criminals seem to get away with doing this to all & sundry, if it happened in Australia, they would be dealt with SEVERELY & wouldn't survive the first day in prison, they would have an accident, & be suddenly found in their prison cells hanged, bashed, stabbed, & DECEASED, & they would NEVER be able to do this to anyone ever again, make them PAY with their LIVES!

An Australian has NO right to condemn the American legal/penal system. The US definitely has a flawed and imperfect penal system but at least the US actually has life sentences without the possibility of parole for our worst offenders. Sparing victim's families the horrors knowing the person who murdered their loved one could be released, or having to attend multiple parole hearings for so called 'people' who have ruined their lives. Australia consistently turns incurable sociopathic criminals loose, even after they have committed multiple murders. It's perhaps the most lenient penal system in the Anglo world. The US sets the best example of how to deal with violent offenders. The UK and those with UK cloned legal systems like Australia have no room to criticize the US on this matter.

What i dont understand is how kidnapping, rape, going an hour and a half across state lines to a location for the express purpose of concealing the crime didnt warrant a minimum sentence due to the severity of the criminal intent. The state of California paid Jaycee 20 million dollars for paroles failure to monitor Gurido despite countless visits to his home and the fact that he was petetioning as a minister to be let off parole. It was a campus security guard that solved this case and him report to his parole agent.
