They were bred for the Swiss mountains, to pave ways through snow and to resuce humans. Like the New Foundland dogs (water rescue dogs for icy Atlantic waters) they had to be big. I guess they feed him well so he fills out to the potential of his breed. - only disadvantage: the large dogs age and die sooner.

He is harmless. Berners are dopes on ropes. The only thing "dangerous" about them is that they are 100+ lbs. lap dogs!

@@ruthresetar5940 My German Shepherd never saw a rope or collar, a female that had no desire to run away, never bit anybody was wild and free - I lived on a dead end and next to a park.
@@edwardrossman9448 It's just an expression. My Newfoundland would never put a paw on the sidewalk in front of our no fence front yard. He stayed on the grass, no restraint needed. I've no doubt your girl was wonderful. When I was a child, the neighbors' German Shepherd went everywhere we did as we played outside.
