"Repun kannosta" also is a direct quote from a legendary finnish long range patrol sergeant (ErP4, päämajan sissiosasto) Paavo Suoranta, who was asked about his assigments during continuation war by Mannerheim during his Mannerheim Cross award ceremony. Mannerheim asked what is he awarding Suoranta for, and Paavo answered "repun kannosta, sir!". Gives a bit of a vibe that the SOF operative was perhaps awarded somehow for his sacrifice...
Great show! Thank you for recapping. It is great to see a piece of media that shows Finland as a strong an patriotic nation that shouldn't be underestimated. I am german and I think we won't get any own TV shows that even come close to this premise. In Germany a lot of people are afraid that Putin will start a war with NATO (unreasonable fear because it is highly unlikely) or use nuclear weapons against Germany (an even more unrealistic fear) if we somehow upset Moscow. The Kremels propaganda and its useful idiots had a decent impact in my beloved country, I'm afraid.
Great review! I was in the us army 2008-2013. We were told that’s its league to shoot a downed enemy if you have not passed them when clearing the area because they could still be a threat. But you can’t pass them then turn around and shoot them. I don’t know if it’s actually a crime but it’s what I was trained. Luckily never had to do that.
US Army Infantry from the same era, I was taught the same way. When you're sweeping, you put a couple of rounds into any enemy body you come across, just to make sure they're dead. But if you clear an area and then shoot a dead body that you've already swept, it's a war crime. I guess the mentality has to do with preventing torture of enemy wounded and/or mutilation of the dead, both of which are obviously war crimes.
So I'm kind of curious, since most people in Finland spend time in military service, wouldn't inaccuracies like what you mentioned with the armored vehicles stand out more with the Finnish audience? Like in comparison with say my country Canada you could arguably get away with that better since in our case the majority of people haven't served in the military and thus would be less aware of the inaccuracies.
@@toughspitfire yes with military experience you can definitely pick out faults, but a lot of the stuff (for example the mechanized assault) even if you did military service you might not know it’s done wrong unless you served in mech infantry or an armored unit. At the end of the day we need to keep in mind that this is a drama show and not a documentary, if we want a nicely produced and true to tactica video we can always watch ”Battlefield 2020” which is produced by the Finnish Defense Forces and also is about an enemy invading Hanko
I liked the premise of the show, Russia is an aggressor state and the possibility of such operations are a real threat to all countries in the Baltic and Northern Europe. I found the story a but too cliché at the time, but it is expected from a TV show afterall. The two things that I disliked is how the US ignores a clear violation of NATO territory, article 5 would have been invoked, even if only against the ''mercenaries'' and not against Russia itself. Another thing I found unrealistic is how lenient the Russian forces were against the characters, during that scene in the island they would have 100% been executed after killing russian soldiers, with probably only the woman being spared. Their survival was on pure plot armor. Interested to see where the series will go next.
Regarding NATO, I think it makes sense to assume the worst-case scenario which is being on your own. And given recent developments in some of NATO allies (hint: the US) it's not unreasonable to assume that scenario.
Interesting show, fascinating premise, great production value. Thanks for covering this show and sharing your thoughts. We chatted previously, so I won't rehash any old ground. However, the producers could have saved 30% on the total runtime by simply cutting out the President power walking. LOL Jokes aside, great show and may it remain a work of fantastical fiction till the end of time. Vapaa, vankka, vakaa.
Again thnks for these recaps! A few questions, my interests are more on the political side rather than military but anyways. 1: How realistic is it that this random US guy is just going to be allowed into the operation (not Williams as he's clearly a dual national)? 2: Would the accuracy of the bombing be that good what are the odds that they would have in fact missed a target? 3: Would the political scene really have been that divided? Would the population at all tolerate any sort of giving in? Of course there are outliers but I would have to think they'd be in the *extreme* minority in this case. I really enjoyed the show, I think there is of course room for improvement, the foreign news casts were a bit cringe, and a look more into how the general population was discussing the events would have been welcome. Again thanks for these!
1. To be honest I'm not sure, now since we are in NATO and allies I'm sure there would be a chance for it to happen. But most likely no, specially since the US wants this conflict to go away so there is no way they would have granted him permission to go into combat there. 2. JDAMs are very accurate "JDAM system will provide a weapon circular error probable of 13 meters or less during free flight when GPS data is available. " So very good chance it will hit and destroy the target. 3. I also hope that it would only be an extreme minority who would be okay with it, but seeing how lots of people and politicians want Ukraine to give up land and negotiate.... I think there will be a n alarmingly large part of people who would just want us to give up in order to have some temporary peace. Thank you for watching!
Tbh, the series isn't that good. Somewhat cliché storylines and really boring characters. Plus, the moral dilemma was weird. Like what's there to talk about - your country gets attacked and occupied. Of course you will react with force.
The whole Hanko operation seems to be heavily inspired by Finnish defence forces' renewed defence doctrine videos "Taistelukenttä 2020" ruclips.net/video/bTmWCbcYwb8/видео.html
As a 43 years old Over Lietenant rifle platoon leader in the Finnish reserve. I watched 20 mins of the first episode and couldnt watch anymore. So many mistakes that it went cringe. Finland is one of the only countries in the world with compulsory service and we cannot this this show right?
Thank you for the reviews. I hope that there is a season #2. I hope it becomes available for streaming more widely - Amazon/Netflix/etc.
@@niknikmoore fingers crossed!

Yes I saw Patrick Berghall talk about that on twitter, will make sure to include that in the video I make.

haha yeah definitely less presidential walking in next season 2 please and thank you.
Where are you watching this? Where is it streaming?
God I wish Season 2 has English subtitles.
I would think that Season 2 will get a Finnish and international release date at the same time hopefully.
Hopefully it will be a mostly "silent" and real war movie, not most cheesy as this, even this had some good parts still.
