  • “There was a covert Lib-Lab alliance which resulted in the Liberal Democrats getting a disproportionately large number of seats compared with the popular vote.”
Conservatives don’t “need to panic” about the Liberal Democrats but should ensure that the centre right is united and merge ideas with Reform, says Tory MP Christopher Chope.

If the Tories merge with Reform they would be restricting their appeal to a subset of Tory voters and a small subset of Labour voters. The only reason the Tory and Labour parties are major parties is because they're both broad churches and can have mass public appeal. It's unlikely that Reform will ever have mass public appeal. Moving the Tory party to the hard right, would be a major mistake , and deter the one-nation Tories from voting Tory.

The reality is that for the first time in 🇬🇧 history, the right-wing vote was fragmented, so the Tories have the dilemma on how to build a governing coalition. Take a turn to the centre or move towards more popular positions among the right-wing electorate. The answer is: to do both.
Simply, just rejecting Reform and battling it out with Lib Dems in the Southeast isn't gonna get them to 326, the notion that moderate Tories will leave to the Liberal Democrats but core conservatives will remain no matter the ideological alignment and policy positions of the party is false.
The Tories have to adopt a mixture of hard-right and centrist policies ranging from issue to issue.
The no.1 issue for core Conservatives/Red Wall voters is immigration, so clearly, the Party has to be hardline on that issue.
While for the Moderates, the no.1 issue is effective governance, which equals proper-functioning public service, a common-sense tax code, and partner-like relations with the 🇪🇺.
So far, so good, these positions are fairly popular and the Tories will no electoral pushback.
The tricky issue is the scale of government intervention in the economy.
On the one hand, you have the socially liberal/fiscally conservative faction of the party (potential Lib Dem voters)that want the minimal possible intervention and on the other, the socially conservative/fiscally liberal faction of the party.(potential Reform voters) that would love a bit of economic protectionism and libertarianism.
The former is a larger parliamentary force, with the latter being a larger force in society .
The Conservatives have to integrate both Social Conservatives and Fiscal Conservatives into one party if they want to win a general election again. If they have only fiscal conservatives, they become Lib Dems and having only social Conservatives they become Reform.😊
