  • Belgium stars Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne put their language skills to the test by translating English football clichés into various languages. Inter Milan’s Lukaku can speak English, Italian, French, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese and Lingala, while Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne speaks Dutch, English, French and German.

    "Schoolboy defending" is an English expression, doesn't really work in Portuguese. No wonder it was the only one that tripped him up

    Remembering phrases in languages that one doesn't use everyday is tough. At first one struggles with wording and structure but after a brief time they get eaxier and easier, rather like riding a bicycle. I'm envious of these two. Knowing many languages is a wonderful skill.

      I have no doubt that they have enough of those languages that they could go to those countries and be understood, remembering and picking up more vocabulary along the way.
      To spit out precisely grammatically correct sentences out of context is tough. I admire how Lukaku chose the wrong word and corrected himself.

    I'm Brazilian and I had no idea what that phrase they given him meant until he said it in Spanish. I've seen him being interviewed by a Brazilian reporter in portuguese and he speaks it perfectly.

    You have to give props to these guys from non-English speaking countries who go out of their way to learn all these languages compared to guys from English speaking countries who dont go out of their way, that much, to learn other languages. Even in Tennis, Roger, Novak and Nadal know at least 4 languages as well. Big props to these guys!.

      @@chidumebiarukwe6436 I’m an American who can only dream about learning other languages - we don’t have any quality schooling for that here, so our only chance to really learn is to live in another country - watching Pulisic go to Dortmund and learn German is inspiring, I don’t see many players doing that these days from US/UK etc.

      Well my friend, my mother language is portuguese(I'm brazilian), spanish is VERY close to portuguese, like, we can understand each other if we talk slowly. And also I know english, as you can tell, hah.
      But Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French and Romanian all came from one mother language which was Latin, so this is why is so easy to notice the translation.

      Dutch is my native language, and I can understand German a bit because of how close it is to Dutch, but can't really speak it. My French is mediocre but I'm improving it, and I've only just started learning Spanish. Portuguese would be nice to learn, since I love going on holiday to the Azores, and since I can currently only swear in Italian, it might be an idea to improve that too.

    I can speak Portuguese, Spanish and English, and I tell you, going for a fourth language is being VERY HARD, props to Lukaku. But he stays close to european friends all the time, the KEY is PRACTICE.

      Depends on what that language is. Dutch is pretty similar to English, and if you speak Portuguese and Spanish you could probably learn Italian and French quite easily. It's not the same as learning a language from a completely different family, like Russian, Chinese, Swahili, etc..

    Congolese people for some reason just knows crazy amount of languages.... every Congolese person I’ve ever met knew a minimum of 4 languages

      Well, Congo has three languages (that i know of) they use in their everyday lives, so i guess it isn't that hard for them to learn another language.

      You can say Africa, it’s easier. I’m Senegalese and I speak 5 languages and 2 of them are from my country where everybody speak at least 3 languages (French, Wolof the national language and their mother tongue)

      Congolese from Belgium here (or Belgian from Congo), I speak fluently 4 languages : French, Dutch, English and Lingala. And I'm currently learning German.

    When I saw this video about a year ago it inspired me to become a polyglot, now I’m almost fluent in French, once I learn French I’ll become bilingual, but I want to be a polyglot and not bilingual, so I will learn spanish

      When time comes and you are on a good spanish level, it is much easier to get portuguese or italian with french and spanish to help. See how this works? You just have to start with one and then it suddenly can become impressive for others if you can have conversations in at least 4 languages.

      I am also in the US know English, some Spanish, some Italian.... I want to move to Europe though (easiest time to immigrate is coming up for me.... university), so I will likely finish one of Spanish or Italian (or some other latin language, like French) once I get to Europe.

      It's pretty obvious. Just look at his teammates.
      - He learnt Lingala from his parents.
      - French and Dutch because of growing up in Belgium.
      - English from playing in England.
      - Spanish from probably talking to De Gea or Juan Mata.
      - Portuguese from talking to Dalot at United.
      - Italian from talking to Conte.

    It’s important to learn other languages, especially if you’re footballers. You’ve to learn other languages to communicate well with your teammates, and not to feel like left out.

    In Belgium we learn English, French and Dutch at school but in the later years most people get a choice between German and Spanish. I think Lukaku once said he learnt Spanish because he wanted to play for Real Madrid one day so that's why he learned it.

    Belgium is a crazy small country with three national languages. (Dutch, French and German) As English is almost mandatory to travel or find a job, no wonder that many Belgians try to speak several of them.
