      Was a neighbor of mine in the ‘aughts in the West Village and the above words couldn’t be closer to the truth. Quiet and intense but always present and sensitive to those around him. Engaging and sensitive. Watching the way he chatted with people on the street or the servers and patrons at the places he ate (and, sadly, drank) just a real gentlemen. Great loss.

    I have just discovered this absolute monster of a talent and have devoured everything I could that he has done. And even after watching over 20 of his films I had absolutely no feel for who the man was in real life, which is such a testament to his acting ability. So I literally came looking for an interview with him from the time that he did Capote so I could get a glimpse of who the man was in "real life". This is one of those people, had he lived, would have gone on to produce so many more treasures for us to enjoy and that's what really makes my heart ache about his passing. Well done and thank you sir for all that you gave us to enjoy. You are missed I am sure by so many.

    I'm confident certain actors tap into a character so deep and so powerful it literally takes their lives in some way or another. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Heath Ledger, James Gandolfini to name a few. Yes, some died from addiction and the attempt to self medicate following such a performance, others damaging their own health in other ways.

    • @SmithCommaBenjamin
      @SmithCommaBenjamin 5 лет назад +6

      They were all addicts prior to those specific roles. What makes them great actors is also what makes them addicts. Truman Capote himself was the same way, he was a brilliant and creative person, but had addiction problems

    There are a few occasions, and they are rare, when an actor playing a real person, someone famous, actually becomes that person. Denzel Washington with Malcolm X, Val Kilmer with Jim Morrison, and Philip Seymour Hoffman with Truman Capote. 30 seconds into their performances, and you forget you are seeing an actor playing a real person...they actually "become" the people they are portraying. RIP, Good Sir. You are missed. So incredibly talented and with such artistry... to think of what you might have done...

    Hoffman's performance as the main character in "Capote" was just amazing! He didn't just play that part; he became it. I often wonder if the part of the reason he slid back into drug taking was because he couldn't really handle the sudden fame that came with that performance. For example, when someone in New York approached him and complimented him on that performance, he seemed really uncomfortable with that.

    The world lost as great a talent as Olivier, Burton and other actors who bring genius characterization to the roles they perform. I also feel sad that Charlie Rose lost his footing with regards to the charges of inappropriate sexual acts. Both these men are so intelligent, so interesting. Sigh.

    Actor's imitate life...Capote was a intellectual titan. The Capote at Holocomb was his peak..he was truly a force of nature..it would be impossible to portray but I suppose you can try...

    Seymour Hoffman was a great artist. The world lost him tragically because of the unavailability of addiction treatment that works.

    A little fact here: Charlie Rose is married to Babe Paley’s daughter; Babe Paley being one of Truman’s Swan’s that he wrote about.
