Ep 62: Is it possible to rehumanize the enemy? | INNER COSMOS WITH DAVID EAGLEMAN
The brain easily forms ingroups and outgroups - and shows different responses when viewing one or the other. At the extreme, the brain stops seeing outgroup members as people, but more like objects. But are there ways to rehumanize? And in this context, what do heroes look like? In this episode, Eagleman talks with two men -- Maoz Inon and Aziz Abu Sarah -- one Israeli and one Palestinian. The two men, full of pain and sorrow, are fighting. But they are fighting side by side. They are fighting to repair the future. Learn what peacebuilders are, how they function, and what this has to do with the neuroscience of dehumanization, ingroups, outgroups, and the possibilities -- both political and neural -- for rehumanization.

Thank you three for this genuine expression of love. If we all promise to begin each day with your message, and keep that message throughout the day, we will have saved the world. "All major religious traditions carry basically the same message, that is love, compassion and forgiveness, the important thing is they should be part of our daily lives. Dalai Lama

I wish this episode gets viral! As a Jew, it’s time to stop dehumanizing others and see others as humans. Unfortunately, we can't fix the past, but we can fix the present and the future.

As a layperson, I have enjoyed watching all the different perspectives and approaches you have taken over the years to understanding the intracacies of the human brain and how to improve human life in so many diverse ways. I don't know of anyone else in your field with such broad vision. This episode was so beautiful and in line with who you have shown yourself to be, not just an amazing scientist, but an awsome humanitarian. I just hope your channel grows so that the rest of the common world can benefit from the lessons you are sharing with us. I saw the Armanpour interview and was aware of several wonderful movements promoting peace and conflict resolution. The whole world needs these messages. Thank you for doing what is in your power to help spread them. And thank you for all the work you do in exploring our mysterious inner cosmos. Humanity's survival seems to hang in the balance of what we discover there and how we can evolve (change) through action.

As much as I enjoy the general variety of the podcast around all things psychology/neuroscience, I'm particularly loving what I seem to notice as trending themes around tribalism, group bias, conflict resolution, objectification vs humanization, etc. It's a great theme on the whole, but I find it particularly timely and thus relatively more useful in terms of thoughtworthy and applicable insights. Super appreciated.
Thanks a ton and much love for bringing in the conversation for this episode, and again for the podcast in general! I'm likely biased from having studied the mind in school, but this is definitely currently my favorite podcast that I look forward to.

    1. We are ALL one humanity. We all blink, cough, and can tighten our muscles. Any woman can get pregnant by any man. Any child can be brought up in any culture, religion, language, part of the world. We use Distorted Mind Beliefs to deny and suppress this Truth and see ‘Us’ and ‘Other’.
    2. We are ALL born naked. Every Woman knows this. We are made to feel shame or unsafe due to Distorted Mind Beliefs and denied the Truth
    3. We are ALL born equal because the sun shines on each of us. Distorted Mind Beliefs deny and suppress this Truth.
    4. We ALL live on one planet shared with the Commons (Waters, Airs, Soils), All Species and Each Others. We use Distorted Mind Beliefs as a reason to kill one another, The Commons and Species.

But what about the groups that threaten you with violence only because of your different or no religion or because you are not in agreement with their political or religious views? Does not that enter into the equation for the threatened party? As a for instance one group of people literally promises violence against so called “liberals” or even worse names! Oh and acts of violence from the one group and continue to happen, with little to no condemnation from other members of this group .
