    Why would Spider Man send a letter to a blind guy, how was he supposed to read it?

    • @ComicTropes
      @ComicTropes  6 лет назад +101

      Yeah. Pretty weird. I guess he just knew Daredevil could read it with his super sensitive touch powers. But there's no way he could realistically have known he had those powers.

    • @calanives3270
      @calanives3270 6 лет назад +49

      When Spider-Man (Spiderman) wrote the letter he applied a lot pressure on the pencil so that it embossed the paper.

    • @Kijinn
      @Kijinn 6 лет назад +19

      If Spider-Man would have been giving it that much thought, he could also have used a pointy stick (tool, fork, etc.) instead of an actual pen to write the letter, so that anyone but Daredevil would have seen just a blank piece of paper.
      But it's really not worth thinking about it, considering how badly written those stories were.

    This is why I love these older gold and silver age comics. They’re not as sophisticated and usually not as gripping, but they’re just very fun and kind if charming in their silliness. It feels much more innocent.

    I like that Karen and Foggy can live in a world where men can climb up high rises like they're strolling down the road or pick up cars and toss them or smash through concrete walls... but a blind superhero? That's just too much, man.

    My dad collected Marvel comics in the mid to late 60s, so I grew up reading his stash. These issues of “Daredevil” were among my favourites as a kid. I loved the whole conceit of Mike Murdock. I loved his goofy sunglasses, I loved his corny slang, and it was like nothing else in any other comic book. What other superhero had two secret identities?
    Incidentally, I still have a lot of my dad’s comics. Because he kept them in a paper grocery bag in the attic, they’re in terrible shape. Most have lost their covers (many of which are tacked to the wall of my office) and all of them are falling to pieces. I don’t care. Those comics are more precious than gold to me!

    I was a teenager. I hung on to this story arc like a soap opera fanatic.
    The one inconsistentcy that struck me was that a Daredevil uniform fitted to Foggy would've hung like a feed sack on Matt.
    I considered the 3 issue Hyde-&-Cobra story an epic...the equal of the earlier 3 issue series with Kazar, back in the John Romita era.

    When I was first getting into Marvel stuff through the Essential volumes, Silver Age "Daredevil" was among my favorite discoveries. It reminded me a lot of the style of Archie comics: static yet likable characters placed into a series of stock situations and plot types. I knew, or at least could reasonably guess, what I was going to get, but the execution was so darn spot-on that it was more than worth the time and money investment on my part. You're right; there is no good reason for Matt Murdock to impersonate a "twin brother" in order to throw his coworkers off his trail, never mind the likelihood that they don't even care about Daredevil's secret identity anyway. Even then, it's fairly compelling and generates quite a deal of drama, comedy, and pathos. I really enjoy the way a third-teir Marvel book could run with something so goofy for so long, dispose of it in suitably sly fashion, and yet be stylishly executed throughout. It works on a base level, and that's more than enough for me. I kinda wish more comics these days could adopt a "darn the torpedoes, see what sticks" approach; maybe it would bring more people in to wonder what's going on here.

    • @ComicTropes
      @ComicTropes  6 лет назад +5

      Benjamin Kellog Yeah, early Marvel did a great job at making their characters relatable with problems and also likable.

    • @benjaminkellog7311

      Speaking of which, I just realized that Daredevil's relationship dynamics are remarkably similar to Thor's Silver Age incarnation, albeit with one extra guy (Foggy) and no familial pantheon subplots. Both books dealt quite extensively with "guest" villains from other Marvel titles (a trend I've noticed with other titles, but it's practically a way of life for Thor and DD); I wonder if this was a side-effect of the "Marvel Method," letting the artists experiment with journeyman-type threats and find interesting takes that might work well in the flagship books (FF, Spidey, etc.).

    This is actually the first time I've seen the comics panels about Mike, so thank you.
    But the first time I ever heard about it was in a kids' magazine called 'Dynamite', which had a feature about Daredevil (huge surprise, since it was a Marvel publication). I have to admit, it sounded a lot cleverer in the sketch description than it came out on these pages.
    I was reminded of Peter David twice over here. Once, because in Hulk and other books he loved to revisit past goofiness, and had one character question another and basically ask 'Why Would You Even Do That?' while pointing out all the flaws in the past plot. The best part is, the characters were stuck with it: There was no modern assertion of why it made sense, unless the logic flow was perfect. One I always remember is Rick Jones accidentally revealing to Betty that Bruce once used a Gamma-ray device to switch back and forth, and she was livid.
    The second time was that his stories were the only ones circa Civil War to really explore potential positives from Peter's unmasking. Now, a handful of characters may forever keep the secret ID thing going. But storylines like 'Mike Murdock' show why it is not a trope of choice anymore.
    You know, I'm going to suggest the Civil War Spider-Man unmasking side stories for one of your article-videos. I consider it a great missed opportunity.

    I know everybody here probably know this, but Colan famously didn't read scripts or ideas ahead, he just drew in his dramatic style and usually ran out of pages, and the last pages's panels would just get smaller and smaller, so that's one possible explanation for that tiny cliffhanger.
    As for the arc itself, 1) I first read of it and thought it didn't make sense, then read it and thought it made even less sense. 2) I litterally just read it and I can't even remember all the insane nook and crannies it went through.

    It's not red lenses. It's literally the continuation of the red leather over his eyes from his mask. I read the comics of a character describing the mask. That was literally the description. They only make it red lenses in film because the actor has to see while doing his performance.

    Daredevil Goes to extreme lengths to preserve his identity half of the time in the silver age. I recently read a silver age Daredevil story(something about El Condor) where Matt and Foggy go to South America to help this politician out. Guy gets kidnapped, Matt finds some clues, Matt knocks the living hell out of Foggy with an unnecessarily hard Karate chop from behind in the dark. He could’ve just used a single nerve pinch. To make it worst, Matt just leaves him there. He did this all just to change into Daredevil. Goddamn.

    Maybe Chris-cross hates it when Chat Brats like me suggest video topics. Who knows? But here's one, anyway: the rampant Social Incest that comics characters rabidly engage in every chance they get. Be it at their favorite store, school or job, they can't seem to keep their hands off anyone they see most every day, and it really looks stupid when you view the big picture of comics history. Of course I got this notion when Chris brought up how both Matt and Foggy were crushing on the same girl - their office mate. Geez, is there ANY small group of lazy people that WON'T grab after the nearest cheap and insincere romantic opportunity? Apparently not!
