It's 40 years ago to the day, pretty much this time of the evening, that 'we' all sat down with bated breath to watch this episode - as a student house of under-grads, we were watching on a 19"b/w tv, but I saw it in-colour at the end of August , the same year, at the climax of a summer repeat-run daily on BBC 2 timed for the start of the new season, which was then delayed until November - be great if you could 'load' the other parts of this classic episode (you have parts 1 and 2 'up' at the moment) - Bruce Broughton (?) did the great music score for this episode.
Great story, but did you really watch on a B&W TV? I thought nearly everyone had a color TV by 1980. I was only 5 years old in 1980 and grew up in Dallas, but it seems like everyone had color tvs then. Growing up, we did have this one small portable B&W set that my dad would take with him to places we he wanted to watch football games. lol.....
@@caseyl3789 It was still a transition period from black and white to color tvs back then in that time period. My parents had a small black and white tv in one room, maybe a 13 or 19 inch one, but they had a color tv in the living room. A big, enormous 25-inch Zenith floor model. Yes, believe it or not, back then 25 inch was considered a "big" screen tv🤣.
If Jock would have known J.R. knew about those oil fields being nationalized, we would have seen Jock acting just like Bobby. Jock would have gotten everyone involved in the deal together and told them they would be reimbursed as much as possible. Jock also would have removed J.R. from Ewing Oil.

I agree with you 100%! Jock and JR were the best of the series by far. I only own the box set DVDS with Jock in them. Once he died, I lost interest. As you said, nothing but piling on JR the rest of the series. But I am happy he won in the end when his Masterpiece in the later series sent Cliff to prison for life.
Jock dying left a huge hole, because the show’s most important producer, Leonard Katzman and his writers created the Ewings as a family and not just single characters. The sons never betrayed their parents, especially Their father, Jock Ewing. JR never tried to steal Ewing Oil away from Jock. Everything JR did was for his family but mainly for His daddy. Even mortgaging South Fork was to make Ewing Oil the biggest independent Oil company in the Southwest and as tribute to his daddy. Sure, JR was driven by Power but nothing came before his daddy. When Jock died, JR focused that love to his son, John Ross Ewing III.
I never liked that JR never had anyone in his corner. There was Ray until the writers made him a hypocritical self righteous jerk. Jock and JR were my favorite characters on the show.
