Any tips on how to think while improvising? Do think of a scale based off of a chord each bar, or memorise arpegos or follow guide tones? I know its a little bit of everything, but I just want to know what you would give as a tip since your very good. Im having trouble forming chords while improvising and harmonizing. I know the theory, its just that I can not do it fast as of right now. Thanks! Great playing of course.

Hey man thanks so much and thanks for the question it’s a big one. I’m going to do my best to answer but It’s tough because it’s so multi faceted- I’d say step one is knowing the tune inside out so that you can access the melody or harmony at a given moment within the solo then you build off of that maybe by applying arpeggios or guide tones as you mentioned but at the end of the day that’s all just theoretical knowledge and often hard to access in the moment I think it’s important to spend a lot of time exploring on a tune and just trying to find things that sound good to you with what you can already do on the instrument and what you’re already hearing -that feel good to play with your hands and follow your musical inclinations and instincts. Do things as slow as you have to to get them right too it will get faster-Sometimes I’ll come up with a line thats something I would like to have played (but couldn’t get to fast enough) then practice it like it’s an etude which helps with developing your own understanding and relationship with the notes coming out. If you’re ever feeling like you’re not hearing any ideas then listening and transcribing is always a good move. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about chord changes and developed a lot of material to help me flow overtop and outline chord changes that was very valuable work for me to have down Anyway I’ll stop rambling now I hope this is helpful in some capacity. I think consistency and curiosity are the keys. If you just keep showing up and trying to find the notes that resonate with you can’t go wrong!

@@mikeclement923 thank you very much will all the effort that you put into that, I appreciate it. I relate to a lot of the stuff you said and it’s nice to hear all of that said. I’m going to try some of the stuff you said. I think that I should be practicing all of these methods in one tune and that will really help piece everything together. Thanks again.
