In this video I'm going to show you how I usually start my oil painting. I sketch the outline and the values very roughly. I measure my drawing using what I call a simplified grid. This system is quite fast to set up, unlike the grid system. After I do the grid, I sketch my drawing with just one colour which is burnt umber. I thin down the paint using mineral spirit / white spirit. By starting the painting this way, it's easier to manage as I only need to work with just 1 paint rather than full colour. This thin paint dries so quickly. And after it's dry I paint over it with full colours.
