  • We often consider interacting with Aliens and Robots in the future, but what about Alien Robots? Today we'll ask what artificial intelligence created by aliens might look like and what sort of circumstances we'd encounter them, and if they may be the only aliens we ever encounter.

I always found it more likely that we would encounter AI in space, more so than natural organisms. Traveling through space as an AI is easier and works well as reconnaissance for their creators.

Hey, Arthur. I have a solution for the laser-driven ships not being able to slow down at their destination. Near the halfway point, they deploy a countermass and a mirror in front of them and decouple from it, and then tilt their sail to tack out of the way of the beam proper. The propulsion beam from the origin now strikes the counter mirror, reflects off it, and back onto the ship. The ship orients its sail to the beam reflected off the counter mirror, and begins to slow down, even as the counter mirror departs.

    • @EverydayNormieMadafacka

I like that idea all tho I’m not sure it will be half point as laser will be weaker the further you go

Influence? Really? Food?!? Or a cap on fleet size... I know it's for gameplay purposes so you can't zergrush your way through the game. But it would be nice to be able to build a big fleet to ROFLstomp the empire who vassalized you for getting curbstomped by a fallen empire you pissed off because you needed a rivalry to gain influence...

Every time I hear about grey goo eating up all the matter in the universe I always think it's a silly idea.
Because like this video mentioned it's basically just another form of green goo.
Similarly I think any AI that gets outta hand is either going to evolve beyond its initial goals or be stuck within a very limited area.
Like there's probably some point between "optimize the manufacturing of paperclips" and "leave the planet/solar system to find materials" where it's too complex not to question what it's doing and whether it's really what it wants to be doing.
I mean... We're basically the result of a self evolving survival optimization algorithm.

@Shaun Davenport There are no real differences between AI aliens and "dudes in space ships" (what are also drones if something isn't dated). We should remember that we also tend to treat animals as dirt, until we are smart enough to appreciate them. And because morality is logical it would be universal value. Even without the empathy.

I thought of something that would be really cool, and intensely unlikely. Imagine being a debris collector in earth orbit. So, you have years of experience gathering derelict pieces of equipment of all sorts. One day, you grab a satellite, thinking you are just gonna recycle it, but you see something useful on it, so you get your hands on to take it apart. But, you can't really start, since the thing is made of unusual materials (for the given expectation of man-made satellites) and construction style. Upon closer examination, none of the fastener sizes are of any standard size. You cannot read or translate the unfamiliar script on the data plates.
Eventually, you come to the conclusion that you have an alien artifact on your hands; or at the very least, a piece of utterly unique equipment. I think that would make for an interesting plot development in a science fiction story.

The Foamy Paradox, Isaac? Well, that's not the usual subject matter on your channel , but I've got something in mind that fits the bill. Ok , one example of a "Foamy Paradox" is "Who Shaves the Barber?" The barber is the "one who shaves all those, and those only, who do not shave themselves". ... The barber cannot shave himself as he only shaves those who do not shave themselves. As such, if he shaves himself he ceases to be the barber......Dun Dun DUUUN! (Shaving foam was used in this paradox instead of shaving cream, thus placing this into the category of "Foamy Paradox.") ; ) Also , great video Isaac, interesting as always!

One can make a case that aggression is a trait that improves a society's chance of survival by being more "competitive" than less aggressive societies. One could also make a case that collaboration is less wasteful than competition and it allows societies to focus on positive-sum games instead of negative-sum games. The last 70 years seems to show a trend where collaboration is gradually increasing in scale while war-like competition is decreasing in scale. However, 70 years is not a very long time and the last 20 years could be interpreted as a counter-trend.

hey Isaac Arthur, has anyone thought about the relatively simple, but massive scale megastructure of building a dysonsphere level barrier enclosing like an entire star cluster? the small impact that capturing 100% of stellar wind in a finite volume box would eventually bring up the interstellar medium to somewhat habitable levels. basically carry on as usual with colonizing all while a set of self-replicating barrier extending probes slowly over millions of years growing into a shielding wall totally enclosing a stellar neighborhood. when it finally seals, inter stellar media will slowly increase in density and temperature and depending on how you build the wall, you could have small patches absorb radiation rather than reflecting it. this would work on two fronts by first offering a way to vent heat once a suitable condition is met, and these patches would eventually warm up to the point of being significant sources of energy in their own right. the scale of the structure means shifting stellar locations or lifespan are not really variables, this means that with good maintenance, the interstellar medium could reach temperatures and pressures that might be conducive to certain lifeforms. effectively, this miniverse is terraforming space or building your own Aether. it seems dubious at best, but also kind of a really simple long term megastructure.
as an afterthought it also seems like a very zenophobic behavior and if we ever encounter a lightyear scale wall in space (the Eridanus super void maybe?), we should definitely not try to break into it. dont shake the hive.

wants and needs are a product of our feelings and senses creating a reward and penalty system. AI does not have feelings, senses or sense organs or a reward and penalty system. it does what we ask with no other choice but to do it. AI has no ability to not do what we ask it. The will to choose is not something that will develop on its own. think about how you make choices.

Interesting that terraforming is the last step, really an afterthought, yet that's all you ever see on TV documentaries. No talking at all really about building your own habitats. Almost like fake spinny gravity is illegal or a controlled substance.
A lot of the mega structures are totally awesome, but it always seem like maintenance and potential catastrophic failures of mega structures and active support structures is not talked about much. Maybe I've forgotten or missed the proper episode for this? What's the maintenance cost for a cylinder habitat or an orbital ring, or space elevator, and will potential catastrophe through structural failure or terrorist attack stop the building of such structures indefinitely? Some of these projects are so big they almost seem to be the work of purely totalitarian and uniform versions of humanity. Perhaps that perspective changes once population soars above a certain point? There should be nothing stopping population from reaching ridiculous numbers, but as always it's the details we didn't know about or didn't take seriously that kill us all.

Depends if ai-aliens, or even ai in general would have a concept of consent. If it needs to socialize, it might begrudgingly accept it, but I think that machines might have a different view of free will or slavery. All humans are equal from birth( not really, but we need to act like everyone is equal to have a functional society), while some machines are vibrators or toasters( both if you are from the Mechanicus). Same thing for alien swarm hiveminds, they might treat eachother like tools and parts of a whole, with little to no free will/rights on an individual level, but some on a collective

One question I'd like to ask about machine intelligence civilizations:
How amenable towards trade would they be? Surely, if artificial intelligences would be reluctant to wipe out other organic alien civilizations for fear of mutual destruction, then they might also be willing to trade for some resources to help themselves grow and develop (or help them perform their tasks more quickly and/or efficiently), and be willing to part with some less valuable resources in turn (even if it could just be some waste heat), right?
