However, much as we loved our father, my sister, brother and myself, were unable to care for my father once he was fitted with a catheter for his bladder, and his creeping senility. We all worked, and very much needed that income, whereas my father needed full-time care. It was hard to enroll him in a home for the elderly, but we didn't think we had any other choice. Assalamu’aliakum Dear Sir.. You are able to discuss subjects with great importance with such clarity. You are a shining example of what today’s Dawah should aspire to be like. Your position is to represent on the board of British Muslim Council or as a Principal for the next generation of highly intelligent scholars to convey the Ocean of knowledge for those seeking the Truth in the Quran & Sunnah. Alhamdulilah! May Allah azawajal reward you for your efforts.
In the holy book of shahihain by Abu Hurairah, there is a man asked the Prophet: “O Rasulullah, who are among all human beings should I interact more properly?” Rasulullah replied, “Your mother” He asked again: “Then who else?” The Prophet said : “Your mother” The man repeats his question: “Then who else?” The Prophet replied: “Your mother” He repeated the question again: “Then who?” Rasulullah SAW answered: “Your father”. From that story, it is very clear right that the command to respecting parents, especially mothers has been ordered since a long time ago by Rasulullah. For so many of their struggles that we can not repay even with the entire earth and its contents.
Paul as an ex Londoner brought up in the 60s I remember the remnants of Christian values being taught even by those perhaps not religious but sympathetic to the British Christian traditions The permissive society women's liberation which certain has its place and the Godless society driven my the new age scripture of TV and radio and the new house of worship the shopping centre have turned GB into Godless Britain... Muslims need to lead by example and some do. Now it seems that it is Muslims who will offer a seat to my wife on a bus and even me. Further more Muslims are well placed to lead by example. The young and the old. The young will learn compassion if their parents and teachers practice compassion. That's us. Placing our parents in nursing homes is a, relatively, modern practice within western society. To the point that some grandparents don't want to be a burden to their children and even ask for it. I bet most would love to live to their end within their families. I know I would. Even gypsies find that shameful and mind their old ones at home, till death. Great, fantastic, profound Hadith. What a reminder. 👍🏽😘
I would love to have my mom live with me, as she is old and have Alzheimer. But, I don't have money enough to stop working, to be home with her all day. I found a wonderful old-age home for her, where I would like to live once I get old! I visit her every weekend. Even if I win on lottery I could not anymore take her home, as she don't sleep in the nights, she needs diapers, she walks out and gets lost if I turn my head. I would need a string to be attached to her 24/7 and I need to sleep in the nights to be able to care for her in the days.

I was taught from when I was small to respect old people and to never make fun of disabled people. My parents treated their parents with love and respect and I learned from them that olde people should be taken care of. I grew up in Scandinavia, no religion but following christian traditions. Still I was taught to care and feel compassion and sympathy for people, especially old people. I took care of my moms relative until she died at 99 years, and I take care of my mom now. I can't have her live with me as I must go to work(she can't be left alone)but I go to see her every single weekend. I didn't need religion to learn about respect and care and love, I just had great parents to look at and to learn from.

Salam Paul May I suggest that you moderate a discussion between Bart Erhman and Ali Ataie on the topic of crucifixion. Bart vehemently believes in crucifixion of Jesus and Ali goes with the Quranic narrative. It would be good to discuss this from a historical perspective.
A short while ago, there was a case in the Saudi courts that a brother brought against his brother in order for his elderly mother to live with him. Everyone wants to honor their mother The Saudi judge chose the brother who between them would be better able to take care of his mother
Kitab Al adab al mofrad, meaning the separated or dedicated manners book, it is called separated to avoid confusion with the book of manners in the Sahih, Imam al Bukahri in this collection didn't commit himself to the same degree of rigorous scrutiny of hadith as in the Sahih book, since tolarating weak evidence for details of manners that have Quranic of Sahih basis wouldn't have impact on halal and haram or basis of faith, so the book contains some weak hadiths, still it is highly valuble source of knowledge in general.
I'd like to share these reminders from surat Al-Isra, Ayah 22-38: "22. Do not set up another god with God, lest you become condemned and damned. 23. Your Lord has commanded that you worship none but Him, and that you be good to your parents. If either of them or both of them reach old age with you, do not say to them a word of disrespect, nor scold them, but say to them kind words. 24. And lower to them the wing of humility, out of mercy, and say, “My Lord, have mercy on them, as they raised me when I was a child.” 25. Your Lord knows best what is in your minds. If you are righteous-He is Forgiving to the obedient. 26. And give the relative his rights, and the poor, and the wayfarer, and do not squander wastefully. 27. The extravagant are brethren of the devils, and the devil is ever ungrateful to his Lord. 28. But if you turn away from them, seeking mercy from your Lord which you hope for, then say to them words of comfort. 29. And do not keep your hand tied to your neck, nor spread it out fully, lest you end up liable and regretful. 30. Your Lord expands the provision for whomever He wills, and restricts it. He is fully Informed, Observant of His servants. 31. And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them, and for you. Killing them is a grave sin. 32. And do not come near adultery. It is immoral, and an evil way. 33. And do not kill the soul which God has made sacred, except in the course of justice. If someone is killed unjustly, We have given his next of kin certain authority. But he should not be excessive in killing, for he will be supported. 34. And do not go near the orphan’s property, except with the best of intentions, until he has reached his maturity. And honor your pledge, because the pledge involves responsibility. 35. And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with accurate scales. That is fair, and the best determination. 36. And do not occupy yourself with what you have no knowledge of. The hearing, and the sight, and the brains-all these will be questioned. 37. And do not walk proudly on earth. You can neither pierce the earth, nor can you match the mountains in height. 38. The evil of all these is disliked by your Lord." * the clear Quran 17:22-38 *
Salam alaykum dear brother, I love that you chose this topic. Elderly should be cared for and respected. Allah sends barakah (blessings) to communities where elderly are respected and cared for. Sahih Muslim 2569 Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Verily, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, would say on the Day of Resurrection: O son of Adam, I was sick but you did not visit Me. He would say: O my Lord; how could I visit Thee whereas Thou art the Lord of the worlds? Thereupon He would say: Didn't you know that such and such servant of Mine was sick but you did not visit him and were you not aware of this that if you had visited him, you would have found Me by him? O son of Adam, I asked food from you but you did not feed Me. He would say: My Lord, how could I feed Thee whereas Thou art the Lord of the worlds? He said: Didn't you know that such and such servant of Mine asked food from you but you did not feed him, and were you not aware that if you had fed him you would have found him by My side? (The Lord would again say: ) O son of Adam, I asked drink from you but you did not provide Me. He would say: My Lord, how could I provide Thee whereas Thou art the Lord of the worlds? Thereupon He would say: Such and such of servant of Mine asked you for a drink but you did not provide him, and had you provided him drink you would have found him near Me. - I love how Islam teaches us to do good and watch our toungues. For example, there is a sahih hadith where the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Aisha (may Allah have mercy on her) that her word would have polluted a sea when she said that one woman was very short. I love how he (peace be upon him) was very passionate about making people think about their words. There are many hadiths about it. He (peace be upon him) said that one woman would go to hell because people around her did not have peace because of her tongue even though she prayed regularly and fasted even more than shs was obliged to and gave charity. May Allah unite us upon The Truth.

In the holy book of shahihain by Abu Hurairah, there is a man asked the Prophet:
“O Rasulullah, who are among all human beings should I interact more properly?” Rasulullah replied, “Your mother” He asked again: “Then who else?” The Prophet said : “Your mother” The man repeats his question: “Then who else?” The Prophet replied: “Your mother” He repeated the question again: “Then who?” Rasulullah SAW answered: “Your father”.
From that story, it is very clear right that the command to respecting parents, especially mothers has been ordered since a long time ago by Rasulullah. For so many of their struggles that we can not repay even with the entire earth and its contents.
Paul as an ex Londoner brought up in the 60s I remember the remnants of Christian values being taught even by those perhaps not religious but sympathetic to the British Christian traditions
The permissive society women's liberation which certain has its place and the Godless society driven my the new age scripture of TV and radio and the new house of worship the shopping centre have turned GB into Godless Britain...

Now it seems that it is Muslims who will offer a seat to my wife on a bus and even me.
Further more Muslims are well placed to lead by example.

May Allah SWt bless you for shining the light on the morals and ethics of Islamic teachings towards the elderly. The west significantly lacks this and hoping as the years go by, the west invests in granny flats and incorporating families to make a place for there elderly loved ones. We need to show patience and love for our parents because one day we will be in there place.

Someone asked to Rasulullah,
“O Rasulullah, I want to perform jihad but I can not do it.” He replied: “Are your parents still alive?” He replied, “Yes, my mother is.” He said: “Meet Allah in state of devotion to parents, when you do that, its equal with you have performed hajj, umrah and jihad.”

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased)."

“I asked the Prophet,” What is the main deeds? “He replied,” Praying in time. “I asked again:” Then what else? “He replied,” Devote toward parents. “I asked again,” Then what else? “He replied,” Jihad in the way of Allah.”

May I suggest that you moderate a discussion between Bart Erhman and Ali Ataie on the topic of crucifixion. Bart vehemently believes in crucifixion of Jesus and Ali goes with the Quranic narrative. It would be good to discuss this from a historical perspective.

Kitab Al adab al mofrad, meaning the separated or dedicated manners book, it is called separated to avoid confusion with the book of manners in the Sahih,
Imam al Bukahri in this collection didn't commit himself to the same degree of rigorous scrutiny of hadith as in the Sahih book, since tolarating weak evidence for details of manners that have Quranic of Sahih basis wouldn't have impact on halal and haram or basis of faith, so the book contains some weak hadiths, still it is highly valuble source of knowledge in general.
There’s a saheeh of adab almufrad by imam albani where he verified all the authentic hadeeths in bukharis book
I'd like to share these reminders from surat Al-Isra, Ayah 22-38:
"22. Do not set up another god with God, lest you become condemned and damned.
23. Your Lord has commanded that you worship none but Him, and that you be good to your parents. If either of them or both of them reach old age with you, do not say to them a word of disrespect, nor scold them, but say to them kind words.
24. And lower to them the wing of humility, out of mercy, and say, “My Lord, have mercy on them, as they raised me when I was a child.”
38. The evil of all these is disliked by your Lord."
* the clear Quran 17:22-38 *
Salam alaykum dear brother,
I love that you chose this topic. Elderly should be cared for and respected. Allah sends barakah (blessings) to communities where elderly are respected and cared for.
Sahih Muslim 2569
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
Verily, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, would say on the Day of Resurrection: O son of Adam, I was sick but you did not visit Me.
