People think they’re invincible, but their 12 stone of soggy stuff is no match to 200tonnes of steel and aluminium doing 90mph. The train doesn’t care and won’t notice the demise of the fool who messes with it. The driver however, will have their life changed forever.
I wish Network Rail would change the crossing warnings from ‘Stop, Look, Listen, Beware of Trains.’ to ‘DO NOT CROSS WHEN TRAINS ARE APPROACHING!’
Great show gents, please keep up the good work.

Kinetic energy is mass x velocity squared / 2. That’s an awful lot of mass travelling at high velocity so a heck of a lot of energy. There’s only going to be one outcome.

@@gapthemind--mindthegap8524Each coach of a train can have 100 passengers plus luggage on board too, which will easily take the unladen weight of an Electrostar to well over 200 tonnes per 4-car unit.

Re level crossing misuse , some folk are just plain stupid , they don't need lessons in it because it comes naturally to them. If you are hit by a train , you either end up with the undertaker or seriously injured for life. It also affects the driver and those who have to deal with the aftermath.

Another terrific episode. Watching the instances of level crossing abuse my thoughts went straight to the drivers of those trains knowing there is nothing that they could do. Coming from Scotland a couple of observations about the timetable cuts. The Glasgow/Edinburgh lines can probably absorb the reduction in services but it is the lines north and south of the central belt that are suffering. This week i had the misfortune to travel from Glasgow to Aberdeen on the service that has been cut from 1 train per hour to 1 every 2 hours, a 3 car DMU which was rammed for a near 3 hour journey. Came back by bus. Also last train from Wick/Thuso now leaves 12.30/13.00 instead of 16.00/16.30.

Nigel, Richard and Stef - another excellent episode as ever, thank you!
The Network Rail footage of the level crossing misuse along the Wessex route is truly terrifying. I'm afraid that I still fail to understand the mindset of people who are seemingly oblivious to the dangers at these locations and as others have noted, the effect that their actions are bound to have on the driver of an approaching train.
Just over a year ago, I was in the extremely fortunate situation of being able to have an officially organised cab ride. In what was a truly fascinating day out, at one point during the journey, I had something of a taster of what a driver has to contend with. The incident, thankfully, was nowhere near as close as any of the examples shown here, but that isn't to say that it should be treated any less seriously.
We were on our way between Immingham and Knottingley. Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact location, but we were approaching a foot crossing when a man with his dog strolled across in front of us, apparently not caring about the fact that there was close to 130 tonnes of locomotive bearing down on him (we were running light engine).
Having already sounded a horn warning on approach, the driver gave the chap a not-so friendly reminder on the horn as we passed over the crossing where he had been just seconds previously. The chap never even turned round to acknowledge, but simply gave us the customary two-finger salute.
It really brought home the intelligence level of some people, and more to the point, the type of incidents that drivers have to face on what seems to be an alarmingly regular basis.

I used to drive the Marlow Branch, and there is a foot crossing by the Marlow Rugby Club called Ivory Fields No2 crossing. It is on a tight bend and the line speed is 40mph. I’d left Marlow, speeding up to 40mph, there’s an AWS magnet at about the same point you’re shutting off power, the vigilance is going off, the whistle board for the crossing all happening at once. As I rounded the bend, a woman was standing inside the boundary fence on the crossing with three little terrier dogs, two on leads beside her, and the third off the lead barking at me between the rails. My instant thought was that dog is about to be hit, but the woman ran straight across in front of me chasing the dog off the crossing. I missed her by millimetres. She actually disappeared below my windscreen I was that close. I honestly thought I’d hit her. She disappeared off along the footpath and I had to gather myself before continuing to Bourne End. It really does mess you up as a driver.
I’ve witnessed one fatality right in front of me, though not my train, and that was an awful thing to see. The stupidity of some people really astounds me.
Keep up the good work folks.

Having found your channel by accident and found it to be really informative. Now I am not a railway engineer but a casual follower of the railways system as a heavy use before the keyboard warriors get worked up. It would be interesting to check the amount of Crossing incidents with those with Stations that were maned and those that had Signal boxes that are used to close the gates manually, coupled with the fact there were 4 gates, not half gates is it this case again of relying too much on technology whereas boots on the ground can be more effective in stopping miss use & trespass I am talking Village Stations etc. Not Terminals Also is it not possible that in rural areas that have pedestrians crossing the gates lock as a train approaches as well as the light on the gate which gives a red light that is often vandalised. Finally, on a lighter note can someone explain why the Flying Scotsman is the Most famous engine in the world? If you went to say Easter Island and gave a picture to the locals would they know what the locomotive I think not? In fact, going closer to home would anyone in the crowds when FSM is in a station know the answer to this also. So is the loco Famous for being Famous? Remember it is an Engine named after a train not the other way around. It was like Mallard again famous for its speed record but Coronation held the record on its return journey from its record-breaking run which I understand still holds the record today for the first sustained run for a steam Engine but that's forgotten and never mentioned. I do agree that FSCM does keep the public interested in Steam and helps to kindle interest in all things Railway for the younger generation on which we rely especially on heritage railways' survival.

Trains with "little smiley faces" are Class 365, ex-Networker Express Units. The Class 325 Royal Mail Units whilst having the same front/rear cab ends, are not of Networker design. They are acually similar to Class 319 ex Thameslink units. So spares from "little smiley faces" units will be of no use.

You have covered, in shocking detail, the safety issues re level crossings - this has a cost (what is the value these days of an 'equivqlent fatality'?) as does the distress to the train-drivers involved. There is another issue, which is that level crossings restrict the number of trains - and buses for that matter. Some examples: in London - Acton, Mortlake, Barnes; on Coastway West - Chichester, Shoreham, Portslade; all of these are on lines which - if getting people out of cars and on to trains and buses is an acknowledged aim - should have tube-style frequencies. So, to the costs saved by replacing a crossing, can be added the extra income - plus the community benefits (climate, congestion, air-quality etc.) of getting more people on to public transport. Closing level crossings also helps freight - both rail and road.
So glad that Louise Haigh has included integrating transport networks in her priorities. Getting buses and trains to work together should be a no-brainer - cheap and in theory simple: just get some top shakers and movers together, make them discuss and commit to getting buses and trains to connect properly. Just in case no one has thought to do it, here is a quick 'How to do Integration' guide:
Place (make interchanges easy and worry-free - see the London tube)
Ticketing (through ticketing - all journeys, all modes)
Publicity (everything from way-finding to social media)
    Timing (bleedin' obvious)
and - Staff at interchanges, to advise and help when things go wrong
If you do all that, you should have: A - happy passengers B - more passengers C - more revenue

Royal Mail Class 325 fleet built by ABB (subsequently became Adtranz) at Litchurch Lane Derby, 1995-6. Steel body version of Networker (many parts probably in common with Class 365 / 465). I was involved with communication system design / supply and in that respect can confirm functional compatibility with EMU Networkers. However, some additional parts - fire detection, security system and roller cargo doors not found on Networkers, no windows but structure allows modification. I remember original design requirements included a capability to convert into passenger stock which I recall was consider when they were previously redundant, but not economically viable. In summary, spares shouldn't be a problem!

    • @stuart48br
      @stuart48br 2 месяца назад +1

The traction system for Class 325 was a refresh of GEC Alsthom Traction's dual voltage (750v/25kV) DC traction system from Class 319, rather than the AC traction system supplied by GEC Alsthom for Class 365, which I presume means that the bogies and main transformer are also from Class 319. So the spares position is more complex than previously suggested, with Class 319/769 also a potential source of spares, and the DC traction system may explain why the train is considered more expensive to maintain

As a relatively new viewer still trying to catch up on all your episodes, I have to congratulate you on this latest one! It encompasses many of my own interests and whilst I really want to comment about the Island Line works (I visit the IoW frequently) I can't ignore the opportunity to comment on the shocking piece about misuse of level crossings. I think you were maybe too 'generous' towards those risking their lives - I mean, how stupid do you need to be when faced with red signals, blaring klaxons and physical barriers to think that there isn't danger present?! It cannot surely be blamed on eg 'road layouts' etc. as mentioned?! Talk of 'education' is all very well, but I do hope that that includes an element of shock tactics, ie the frequent use of those shocking video clips? I also think it's worth mentioning the horrendous effect these incidents must have on the train drivers involved! As for the Island Line, it has never recovered from the cessation of the old rolling stock in early 2021 (not 2020 as stated incidentally). Every single period of downtime since then has lasted longer than intended and the excuses given have not resulted in public confidence (I have frequently had contact with the former MP of the Island on the matter), and as a feature of the new £10M 'Ryde Transport Interchange', which it is, has not delivered the promised benefits, eg a half hour rail service etc. It is now left with a quite bizarre '3 trains per 2 hours' service which hardly ever meets the passenger ferry (FastCat) at the end of the pier, resulting in long waits for the trains to turn up, or long waits for the ferry if you've got there by train. I will look forward to SWR/Network Rail comments on your programme. It's a fabulous railway and deserves more attention! (Nigel, especially for you - ruclips.net/video/a81aJVhBmMo/видео.html )

For the island line falling to extend the the line into Newport was because they wanted the steam railway to pay the costs to extend in to Newport wich who cost a lot, cutting down trees, rebuilding Bridges and a new station for Newport. Not that long ago one of the old railway Bridges was pulled down (it wasn't used anymore). And where who a station go in Newport now and be available to extend to Cowes. The steam railway doesn't want island line running over the line because all of the steam locos will need to be fitted with safe systems (AWS and TPWS), all staff trained to be safe around a 3rd rail, and if island line ran over the steam railway line that it could will kill off the steam railway.

Yes, extending the Island Line over the steam railway tracks would be fraught with problems, and even if it wasn't, an extension to Cowes would be beset by an inability to find a suitable route for the track. I think that the only possibility to extend the line would be to Ventnor, maybe, but even then, the location of the station would be well away from the town centre and would require a good bus link. I'd be happy with a more reliable Island Line over the existing route, with an end to constant closures of the pier, and an attempt to time the rail service better to meet the FastCat and even the hovercraft, with enough time to get between the two! Since the reopening in 2021,, they have cut down the available time between ferry and train departures, with many people, including me, left stranded at the pier head because the ferry has been slightly late in arriving! An 'interchange' as it is now deemed does not always ring true.

Substantial reinstatement works would be required immediately beyond Shanklin station. Gardens have been extended into the route before the site of Wroxall station and the route exiting that site towards Ventnor has a small housing development on it. The Southern Water pipes in Ventnor tunnel would have to be rerouted. The cost of reinstating the line would be considerable. Plus there are rumours the class 484s might not last beyond 2030 and a larger fleet of EMUs plus an additional electrical substation would be required.

@@GreenSignals Yes, I think you're right. The matter though comes up fairly frequently. If there was ever going to be a serious plan to extend, the ideal time would have been when the line was awarded £26M in 2019 to upgrade, but it was never considered.

Hello chaps & Steph. Great viewing/listening as always.
Regarding the piece relating to the priorities for the new DFT, I couldn't agree more that reliability is the key issue. Frankly, I'm surprised that usage is back to 95% of what it was pre-pandemic. I am not a regular commuter, but I do take the train as much as practical for me. I'd use them even more, but given their unreliability, I'd never take the chance of travelling to an airport on one (especially if the airport on question is Manchester!).
This lack of (or even perceived lack of) reliability surely deters many from using the railways in favour of private cars.
If Labour can fix that, then I'm sure many more people - me included - would use the trains far more often.

    • @GreenSignals
      @GreenSignals  2 месяца назад

Labour won’t fix it. Only the railway will fix it. What the Government can do is set clear targets and empower the industry to deliver without constant micro-management from Whitehall.

Regarding the government position on the Bill for the Birmingham - Crewe - Manchester leg of HS2 ( without which the project is only barely viable despite the astonishing amount of money sunk into it ) being "repurposed" to support the East-West HS3, could there be some sleight of hand here?
Maybe enough of HS3 would be built so that the gap between Handsacre junction and a theoretical junction between the WCML and HS3 near Warrington could be bridged in a cheap and nasty way by using the WCML?
This could give you a sort of HS2.5 ( High Speed from London to Handascre, then onto the WCML at say 100 mph if you are lucky, then onto HS3 near Warrington, then High Speed to Manchester? It's far worse than actually building HS2 to Machester from Brum via Crewe ( and what happened to the two mayors' proposal to raise private funds to build pahe 2A and 2B? ) but better than nothing at all, and the government statement doesn't seem to exclude it.
Maybe we'll get a sort of cobbled-together and slower HS2A and 2B by not calling it HS2 but "facilitating HS3" which has far less capacity, but hey we are British and used to too little and too late.

    • @GreenSignals

I have a very strong suspicion, based on a number of observations, that the government intend to build some version the western leg of HS2 in it's entirety. But for various political reasons (not least to ensure it doesn't get sabotaged again by a future government) they have not announced this total ambition, and are delivering it in a roundabout way. I'll hold this view until such time as HS2 land is actually offered for sale.
