Panic! At the Disco released its debut studio album ‘A Fever You Can't Sweat Out’ in 2005, which became certified double platinum in the US. Following in 2008, the band's album ‘Pretty. Odd.’ marked a significant departure from the band’s debut sound. 2011 brought the band’s 3rd album ‘Vices & Virtues’, which featured “The Ballad of Mona Lisa” and spent 10 consecutive weeks on the iTunes “Top Alternative Songs” chart. I love my parents somtimes. I asked them to take me to a Panic concert that was a few days ago. My dad ordered the tickets and I showed him every song and he loves it. He is more obsessed than I am at this point and I'm hard to beat. My mom just blasts panic at random points now and my entire family will just start screaming all the lyrics.

I really love the desperation and almost despair combined with the adrenaline- sounding rush that this entire song exudes. Brendon's voice is a perfect match for this song. It makes me sad and excited at the same time. It feels like a new feeling. And I really like it.

Honestly the song embodies both the current era and the 20's perfectly: on the surface it's upbeat and fun and energetic and like a non-stop party, but when you look closer at the lyrics (and concurrently if you look deeper into the history of the 20's as well as the current era) you start to see the depression and the pain and the almost perpetually anxious aura around the whole thing. Right now it sounds so fun but if he were to do a more acoustic version of it it'd come out sounding more like This is Gospel's acoustic version tone wise, where it's pretty somber and almost chilling when you really think about it. Dude's really got a knack for hiding deep, dark messages in his upbeat songs honestly (Hey Look Ma I Made It is another very good example).

It's interesting how much background can matter when listening to this song, as he makes several references to common literature taught in American High School. Tall tale heart, Lord of the Flies, and even more interestingly the song itself "Roaring 20s" is a reference to the historic period of sweet but very brief years in which the American economy was booming and everyone had a house, a job, and comfort. A happy time, to summarize. Which makes it even more fascinating when you keep in mind that the song is essentially talking about getting high- and its subsequent "Crash". Akin to how people who do get high experience a sudden crash due to withdrawal. Which makes sense considering that part of the chorus says "Roll me a blunt 'cause I wanna go home", in which this is probably in the view of an addict who is experiencing a crash.
It's just- absolutely fantastic.
The whole idea of the 'tourniquet' is also associated with drug use, suggesting a sense of escapism with the use of drugs, Hallucinations being a byproduct of usage?
