As a native French person this is sooooo amazing to watch, you actually did a pretty good job ! The only thing that’s missing in your galette is « la fève » !
Hi Vincent! You did really great! Your pronunciation of galette des rois is perfect. You can translate it to king's pie, this is a traditional dessert that we normally eat at the beginning of the year and there is a surprise hidden in it, la fève. La fève is a ceramic figure, initially catholic but then it evolved to be less religious and now you can find either star wars, smurphs, minions etc People collect it like they collect pop figurines. When you find the slice of the pie with la fève you become the king or the queen and you can choose who is your king/queen for the day 👑 Ps : eau is pronounced "o" 😅
You actually didn't do bad AT ALL with the French. You did great even! I'm a French teacher and I was like "there's no way he doesn't speak some French" because your pronunciation is really not bad. The recipe was lacking a very important step though. When you make a "galette des rois" you're supposed to create a hole on the top layer pastry to prevent the steam from the filling creating a dome like yours did. But that was not mentionned and you really did amazing. And like you said, French and English are really not as different as people might think (about 50% of the English vocabulary comes from France so some words are not that hard to understand). But it's way easier to understand Spanish when you're French than French when you're Spanish.
Honestly, I’m Swedish and feel like I can understand quite a lot of German even though I don’t know any, haha. Especially in text. So I think you’d probably do alright with a Swedish recipe as well!
i’d love to see you try to follow a recipe that has been translated in google translate like 10 times. it’s a concept on the tasty channel and it’s so funny, i’d love to see you do this! :)
Especially becuase we make the same distinction in German. We don't call it table spoon and tea spoon. We call it just like the French, c. à soupe (Suppenlöffel) and c. à café (Kaffeelöffel). A sweet baked good with only 3 tea spoons of sugar is also so weird. It's too little sugar.
You did so well honestly ! All the parts that you didn't quite understand were basically explaining things that you already guessed based on your baking knowledge :) Also this is not a cake that is regularly done home-made, it's sold only in January and we usually buy it in the bakeries so it's already a challenge to do it yourself even when knowing the language 😁
Vincent, Vidéo très drôle, vôtre compréhension du français est « presque » parfaite! Le résultat à l’air appétissant. Merci pour ce moment de détente. La bise de Paris :)
We have king cake here in the states too. Usually has a little baby figurine inside it, with green, yellow, and purple colored sugar. It's served around Mardi Gras this time of year. I'm sure it's probably a little different from France's version tho lol
Hi Vincent ! I watch all of your videos, and I really love that you cover so much subjects with your interests. I'm french and I think that your Galette looks great (I'm even pretty impressed considering that you didn't even know what you were doing). I wish you could do a second video with the first option ( "La Réunion" is a french Island 🇷🇪, and I was born and raised there so it definitely warmed my heart that it was mentioned here). Anyway, thank you for your videos :))
One of the best kitchen episodes you’ve done, even though I love you and love them all. But watching you talk your way into trying to understand what to do and trying to understand with you was so much fun!
I’m French and I’m from Réunion Island. Im not speaking English super well but I often watch your videos and I understand almost everything you say! Anyway, I think you did great, you pretty much figured it out except for the amount of sugar for the puff pastry (it was 3 tablespoons not 3 teaspoons), it made me so happy that you tried to do this!
At this point his reading doesn't even sound like French but damn he really understood more than I expected him to I'd never if it was a language I've never learned 😂❤️
HAHAHAHA it's was so great to see you prononce the french words and actually you guessed pretty well ! I didn't finish the video yet but i'm like "yaaaas baby eau is water !!" 😂 trop hâte de voir la suite :)
I'm French and I do this every year for the 6th of February, BUT I buy the puff pastry at the store and only do the filling and decoration. So quick and easy! And delicious. I don't add rum but a few drops of almond flavoring (bitter almond oil). The one getting the "fève" (a bean or a whole almond) is king/queen of the day, wears a crown and can decide what will be done for the rest of the day...
We usually eat the Galette des rois for the Épiphanie in January, normally there is a charm inside. The person who has the charm is considered the King / the Queen, he/she wears a little golden crown (in cardboard) and can choose his/her King or his/her Queen :)
I'm from the Flemish speaking half of Belgium, so understand a little bit of French, and I honestly had the same exact thoughts as you lmaooo. Like I knew most words, but when it came to the execution of the recipe, you kept doing what I was thinking😭😭
"I'm am really fed up with this construction site that starts being really lound whenever I press 'record" could be "J'en ai vraiment ras le cul de ce chantier qui devient hyper bruyant à chaque fois que j'enregistre." in French. But you can be creative and switch "J'en ai ras le cul" with "ça me casse les couilles" and add a few "putain" and "merde" here and there to sound even more French.
I'm a native French speaker and I'm amazed at how well you did Vincent ! This challenge had a double difficulty - the language that you don't know and therefore all the guesses you had to make, plus the technical complexity of a puff pastry with all the specific vocabulary attached to it. I'm sure that I couldn't do it mwself. Well done 👍
As a french baker, i can tell you you’re not doing this bad it’s really fine. The recipe is not the easiest. Tho my professional mind is screaming to me to specify that it’s not a pâte feuilletée. It’s what we call a pâte brisée semi-feuilletée because you add the butter directly into the mixt. The « feuilletage » is not the same at the end and so, not used for the same things. Usually you use the pâte brisée semi-feuilletée for tarte tatin, quiches, flans. For the french galette des rois, you’d use pate feuilletée inversée that has the particularity to rise more and stays straight. It’s also way more difficult to make… Anyhow, great video you’ve made my morning while I’m on the road to work ❤😊
