I've lived in Uganda for 11 years. I've always said I don't want a car. But if I changed my mind, I'd get a Wish. I really like them. We took one deep into a village one time and made it through some rough 'middle of nowhere' roads.
They are pretty fuel efficient too! We didn't really want to have to invest in a car, but with 4 children - it's been so hard without one!
Boda drivers also cost money I would assume? Soon adds up, will be a great investment for your family if do able ❤️

So stressful looking at cars , I live in France and second hand cars are expensive. Good luck , you need a car cos of the kids . Oh don’t forget to check windscreen wipers ! I always forget and every car I have had windscreen wipers knackered 😂😂
I suggest Josh should go alone when checking out cars because most Ugandans think all white people are loaded. Trust me every time they see Emily the price will increase

Else to wash. Keeping the car clean helps stop rust etc etc
I am sure it may be local culture but maybe better for you longer term to have more control over things and keep all costs down. The car cost itself is not huge but maintenance on those roads and the type of mileage you will clock up will be?
I hope you find some that is as safe as you hope. I guess also your idea of safe is not the same as locals who ride with children and no helmets on bodas. So much to consider with such different cultures. Stay well

Hello my opinion is that u get the car which is good by that I mean which does not require to go to garage all the time go for example if one car costs like 10m and other one is 15m and the one for 10m requires going to garage I advise u to take the one for 15m

Thanks so much Emily for sharing more about your financial struggles. I don’t know if I’m the only one, but I just thought that in spite of having these challenges that you could so easily just ask your family to help you. I didn’t know it was to this extent of Josh having to sell his shoes. For some of us, being able to ask family or even getting a bank loan is a luxury not everyone can enjoy. I think ultimately no matter how hard things get, there are still so many things to be grateful for.
Also I would really appreciate if you could do a video on how you cope with your body image as you spoke about gaining weight. It is really inspiring for me to see you still make videos and not go on and on about your body image but instead focus on your family and try to live life ❤

Think you hit the nail on the head with the last sentence. I would be lying if I said it doesn't bother me, but got so much else going on - I care a lot less about my physical appearance when I'm in Uganda! It is something I want to change though, already over a stone down since I got here - just need to be a bit more active and eat healthier ☺
And absolutely with the first paragraph - I was trying to explain that I know many are far worse off than us, but we've always historically kept quite quiet about any financial struggles we have along the way and we've decided to be more open and honest about it ☺
I think that’s one of the benefits sometimes going abroad is you get to shake off so many societal norms and expectations that western society places on us about our appearance. It can be so freeing sometimes . I’m sure you will be able to do it! You and Josh are always running around with things to do.

Do cars have mots? did you have tax and insurance there?.
Nope! Technically you pay some insurance but it's not something you can claim anything on! Pretty sure most cars here would NEVER be allowed on the roads in UK, etc!

I wish I could steal one of the maby unnecessary 4 wheel drives or chelsea tractors we have in the UK which are totakky unnecessary abd drive a convoy of them down through Africa 😂😂😂I tell yiuevery time I see one thise rediculous things on our narrow roads I think of how much better it would be on most African roads .

You are actually better off importing a car from the UK. Most cars in Uganda are over 20 years old and not worth the price.

Part of the reason we've always wanted to move countries, is how little opportunity there is for Josh to earn a decent living here. He had what was considered a good job - 12 hour days, 6 days per week - for the pay equivalent to £60 per month. Not worth it, sadly!
Though more expensive, it's easier and more cost effective long term to get a car in good condition
I have to be honest as a 76 years old when you said Joshua had to sell his shoes… for food.. I can not even believe how your parents feel hearing this. Actually not many of us have money. Yes it comes across as poor us.. not to sure how you get bank loan with no money…

Well, when it was clearly explained in the video that to be all 'poor us' was not why we were sharing that story... that's you that's decided to take it that way. If you listened carefully to what I explained, I said when we used to live here before. As in, this was something that happened around 5 years ago - but you'd have never known, because we were filming all the time but we kept any of our struggles quite private. We decided to be more open and honest about things, which is why we shared that we made the difficult decision to take out a loan to get this car (we are doing better than we were 5 years ago, but yes, still is a struggle) as we cannot put any cash towards it at all. We decided to make our channel more 'real' and we did explain that we are very aware many people are worse off, but things are still hard. You'd be surprised how many people think we are rolling in it, because we make videos online. `We are not, but a car was an essential purchase for the safety of our children.
And my parents helped us out an awful lot, but I didn't want to call them up every single time we were struggling. I felt bad doing so. So, sometimes, we had to find other means to get by.
Would buying a car in the UK & shipping it to uganda be cheaper
Unfortunately don't think so, not an easy process and the import tax is huge - which is why cars here are also so expensive!

Question Emily why don’t you drop the other kids off and just focus on your family l know it might sound harsh or hard to let go but in reality it might be the best decision you guys could do for your family and when you guys are now in a place where you can extend your generosity then you could do it than helping others when you are suffering l can’t imagine supporting people who in the future might not even care for what you did to them + helping the dogs when dogs are lost everywhere in Africa and it’s expensive to go to the vet guys be realistic
We obviously can't change the life of every dog in Africa - but we can help some. If we all did a bit, the world would be a much better place! As for all the kids - they are ALL our family ❤️

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I feel sorry for Adam he is being disadvantaged. He was doing so well in the UK.
How much are the cars?
Depends which one - the big Alphard we looked at was over £6000. Some of the cheaper cars were between £3500-4000 but would need an awful lot of work. Then some in between! Almost every car that has been 'used' in Uganda needs some form of mechanical work after buying though, so also have to factor that in. A lot of money for a 20+ year old car!

Sorry Emily is Uganda a third world country . And cars are expensive because of the taxes. And used cars are even more expensive.
We know - taxes are main reason! Doesn't make it any easier to part with a large sum of money for an old car though! 😂
I think all the stuff you do for orphans and animals is amazing but you both need to get paying jobs. You have 4 kids and a bunch of dogs that should be the priority. Charity is something everybody should do but not when you don't know where your next meal is coming from. Its irresponsible to all involved.
The time I was speaking about, was when I was working as a full-time teacher in Uganda. We are actually doing better now - with a mix of online content creation and my online tuition. Still a struggle - but we hope in time our income will increase. There are different ways to earn a living, not just your typical full-time jobs!
