- Traveling northbound on Interstate 270 in Maryland from the Outer Loop of the Capital Beltway (I-495) in Bethesda to US Route 40 westbound / US Route 15 northbound in Frederick.
The existing expressway now signed as I-270 was originally constructed in the mid to late 1950s. When it opened in 1960, it received the "US-240" designation, which was prior assigned to what is today Maryland Route 355. A few years later, with the creation of the Interstate Highway System, US-240 would receive the concurrent designation of "I-70S". Through the 1960s and 1970s, plans were being developed that would extend "I-70S" to run concurrent with I-495, which would then turn south inside the Beltway running alongside Sligo Creek. "I-70S" would ultimately terminate on I-95 near what is now the Fort Totten Metro Station. Both I-70S and I-95 inside the Beltway were ultimately canceled due to resident opposition. In 1972, the "US-240" concurrency was removed and "I-70S" was renamed to "I-270" in 1975.
Alongside I-95 from the Beltway to Fredericksburg and I-66 from the Beltway to Haymarket, the I-270 corridor as a whole is considered one of the worst congested highways in the DC area outside the Beltway. A particular problem I-270 is known to suffer from is severe bottlenecks, or sudden lane drops. In the course of just fifteen miles from Rockville to Clarksburg, I-270 drops from thirteen lanes to a mere four. This, combined with I-270's four-lane segment from Clarksburg to Frederick exceeding capacity, is the main reason I-270 sees severe congestion frequently. (This video actually captures an infrequent moment where there is no significant congestion.)

I love the sound of a roaring bridge! It's good to listen to it everytime I drive on the highway in Maryland.
12:26 I enjoy the Maryland concrete sound it’s my third favorite.
Maryland's grooving pattern is my all-time favorite.
@@Mapmaker1559 one of the reasons why I love MD
I love your channel. I love roads. I'm a kid so I can't drive yet. But with this channel, I can just go on a virtual ride anytime I want. Can't wait until you get all the roads done in md.
Maryland taxes suck, but the upshot is that we have some of the best roads in the country. Probably THE best tbh
@@FreshTillDeath56 I agree
@@FreshTillDeath56 That's what *I* always say!
Nice to meet another Maryland road nerd like me! I'm finally able to drive now as of a few months ago. It'll come before you know it!
Man, I love going down I-270! It's one of my favorite interstates in Maryland I ever been to. It's been a long time since I was a little boy.
Nice video! I live in Pennsylvania, but when I travel to Kent Narrows or Ocean City I often take I-270 South around Washington DC, and then pick up Route 50. So thank you for the trip down memory lane, and keep up the great work!
Why not just take I 70 East to I 695 to I 97
@@jaygee7028 I would not inflict I-695 on anyone - not even compared to the Capital Beltway - and I live ten miles south of the latter's Exit 3a. (Further, Interstate 270 from Bethesda to Gaithersburg is a dual-dual carriageway configuration - ala the northern section of the New Jersey Turnpike - or Interstate 5 in southern California. It is the only section of any Interstate with this design in the Old Line State.)
@@jaygee7028 MD-32 is another option
I am very surprised by your channel, and definitely like your videos! Just moved from HK to Maryland USA, and I was struggling to find a channel on traffics, it seems like less people are interested in the topic here...
Anyway, I am glad to find this channel
Thank you for the kind words! Welcome to my channel, and welcome to America!
The Sound is Awesome & Amazing
I just still wonder how they could have made it sound that Way :) !!!!
29:25 Hey, the renovated that narrow bridge over MD 85! Cool!
Back in my day I 270 in 2022 we went from germantown in summer camp
Going NBound was always my favorite. Lived in Germantown & miss home
Interstate 270 is unique in Maryland - and Germantown is where it transitions from dual-dual to standard. (Fittingly, it is also the home of both the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Nuclear Energy section of the Department of Energy - both of which are under a cloud of dislike in the Biden Administration.)
Watkins Mill Rd exit is new. Where I used to live when I was a boy, it did not exist. Interstate 270 is a pretty big highway in Montgomery County, Maryland.
This highway is a headache on summer days !!!😂
11:46 the watkins mill rd bridge is completed
Yup it sure is. It looks great. I think we see it in 270 southbound vid.
