  • This is my review of the 1byone "150 Mile Range" Omni-Directional Outdoor TV Antenna. It runs about $89 on Amazon and seems to be very promising but how well does it pick up TV stations compared to other antennas? I include my opinion of this antenna along with where I would recommend it.

    I have been using this antenna for at least 5 years now. Our VHF stations here in MN are FOX and NBC. The two broadcast clusters are 75 miles NW (ION) and 26 miles NE of us here in the far South Metro of MSP. I point the 1bygone mid way between those clusters with the "front" being where the antenna mounts to the pole. The pole positions the antenna about 12 feet high in our living room on the 2nd floor. I run 4 TVs from this setup. I use an amp before the first antenna splitter and two ANTOP splitter amps near the TVs (I highly recommend them).
    Before I added the ANTOP amps I used various boosters which did little to help the signal. I had given up on the NBC VHF station though I was getting it occasionally. The worst station was the ABC UHF affiliate where they have six channels. I could get ".1 and .7" or I could get the ones in between by repositioning the antenna, but rarely both. Bad weather could easily prevent some reception.
    Between our house and the biggest broadcast cluster (NE) are several close houses, a water tower, a tall ridge line, The Mall of America, and the International Airport. We got a lot of interference.
    With this setup I now get all available channels very clearly. Bad weather occasionally interferes, but not often.
    Thank you for doing these videos.

    If you add ferrite you can make an antenna under 6 feet in size work well for VHF. It makes the design waaaaay harder to do and makes it cost a lot more.
    For the electronics folks:
    Basically a dipole that is too short is tuned to a higher frequency. Adding some inductance lowers the resonant frequency. Making the "mu" greater than that of free space also makes some of the radio energy converge towards the higher mu.

    Years ago in the analogue age many people in the Irish Republic used to put massive aerials (antennas) on ridiculously long poles in an effort to capture long distance tv signals broadcast, from many miles away, by UK transmitters in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. They did this firstly because the Irish Republic didn't have its own tv service until the early 1960's, and secondly because even after then it was only one channel with restricted hours of broadcasting plus the UK's BBC and ITV had many popular programmes carried by them. At one time there was such a forest of ungainly aerials stretching up high into the sky in the Dublin Airport area that the aviation authorities officially recognised that area as a hazard to aircraft. Now of course with digital, cable, satellite, etc things are a lot different.

    My antenna of choice has for several years been an old Radio Shack directional one. But it is permanently set to my favorite station that happens to be , if not the most distant one, it is worst behind nearby hills. Besides the directivity, I definitely need the add-on amplifier. That is partly due to the long coax cable losses. And of course all the off-direction stations need that boost as well. The stations are spread from West through North and East to South-East. I have tried omnidirectionals, but found them disappointing.

    Might be okay for people with R/Vs. Small compact gets 50 mile stations but when you are traveling, good to get local news stations covering national news. I have an omni directional as stations span out like the ribs of an umbrella on my antenna map and I didn't want to change antenna directions all the time. I use the Prime Cables 19 inch from Montreal Canada. Rated at 75 miles and mine is 50 feet up and brings in most stations reliably. There are repeat channels 2 MeTv and 2 GetTv. They are south of me across Lake Erie.

      100% oxygen free copper RG6 Quads with compression fittings. For outdoor fittings there are ones with silicone "hoods" that help to keep water out.
      Make sure not to buy that copper clad steel garbage that is sold at Home Depot or Lowes. Steel conducts eletricity significantly worse than copper. Copper RG6 quad is sold readilly online; I use Cable Matters RG6 feom Amazon. Quad that is rated up to 3ghz.
      For really long runs (greater than 100ft without an amplifier) copper RG11 works awesome. RG11 however is very thick and expensive and requires specific RG11 connectors.

  • @rickmears7670
    @rickmears7670 4 года назад

    Very well done, really. One question bugs me about the signal tests; when a station shows little or no signal, can you make sure the broadcast signal is present at normal broadcast strength, maybe by swapping to a better antenna or other method? That could rule out any temporary station issues like maintenance, low-power or a substitute transmission tower. A lot of unannounced tower work seems to be happening during the repack periods. Here lately, a solid-signal one day can be low-power (or gone) the next.

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  4 года назад +1

      I verify all stations are at full power before testing. There was one instance when a TV station was operating at reduced power and I mentioned it in the one review I did. Most times I "film" multiple antenna tests in a single day and then simply edit and present them at a later date.

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  4 года назад

      It's not as easy as that. Combining antennas usually results in both insertion signal loss and multipath interference. Check out my video on this topic: ruclips.net/video/ToeZWV5ifjA/видео.html

I get channels that are well over 50 miles away and I do live in the boonies. I use the good RG6 cable with a powered splitter. It is a directional antenna and I have found one direction that gets them all. Don't ask me why. I get 15 channels. Some 8's I lose during the day but I really don't care. I get all the 'local' channels.

    150 mile range is total BS. If the station antenna is 2,000 ft, the receive antenna is at 20ft, the maximum line of sight distance is roughly 60.5 miles. Because the RF wave bends very slightly (due to refraction caused by the varying density of the atmosphere with altitude), the actual "Radio Horizon" is slightly further, about 70 miles. Now there will be times when some specific atmospheric conditions cause the RF wave to travel much further (for Low VHF channels mostly), but not very frequently.

  • @gomerpal9616
    @gomerpal9616 4 года назад

    I have an earlier version of this I use with an inline amp because we're in the bottom of a valley with 90 ft. trees in line with all the local (Indianapolis) stations. Just this afternoon I moved mine from about 20' on my tower to about 38' and that took me from 29 to 34 channels and even improved the audio levels. For the comment about back in the 60s - back then the signals were analog. Now they are all digital. Whole new ball game. Forget the multi-element 9' long antennas. Also, the gentleman was quite right about 150 mile range being BS. You'll be lucky to get 60, LOS without trees or other signal impediments - WITH an amp.

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  4 года назад

      Even though the signals broadcast digitally the frequencies didn't really change. You still need a large 9 foot long antenna if the signals are weak. You can see if you look at the numbers of the larger antenna models in my other reviews versus this junk omni antenna.

    Question; If I add an RCA flat indoor antenna to two, would I improve my reception? Or possibly pronounce an already fair to good signal to just fair.

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 4 года назад

      "Improve" vs what?
      As a general rule, using a splitter hooked up backwards to combine the signals from two antennas works only for some signals. If you have two identical antennas side by side pointing at the same place and two runs of COAX of the same length, you can get nearly twice the signal from that one direction.
      If you point one antenna north and the other west, you get about what you would get from one antenna if you turned it back and forth with a rotor.

  • @georgef551
    @georgef551 4 года назад

    The minimum percent to pick up a station depends on the tuner. My Panasonic (similar to yours in the background) will work with a solid 26% signal, 25 might pixelate a hare. My first receiver was an RCA HD set-top box, and didn't work under 33%. An LG TV I had didn't work under 43%, but a patch made anything from 39% and up work okay.
    Typically a TV should work at 33%, as this is where the threshhold for a voltage to be recognized as a "1" should be read. Anything under 10% of voltage is a "0". In-between doesn't work, hence the minimum percentage to make the station happen. Some chips aren't designed well to discriminate between 0 and 1, so that percentage to work gets higher (40s or so).

    I have had several RVs over the years, directional antennas are much better and don't require someone to go on the RV roof as they all have a knob on the interior to spin the antenna around for optimal gain. Omni-directional antennas on RVs work fine when RVing in major cities, but most RVers are out camping in nature where a directional antenna is absolutely necessary if you want more than a couple of channels. Unfortunately many of the newer RVs are coming with omni-directional antennas as manufacturers try to save a few bucks, not a biggie for us as we have satellite TV in our RV, but for those that don't they are extremely frustrated with their woefully weak omni-directional antennas.

    • @AntennaMan

      You don't want to combine two antennas directly or you may get multipath interference. Both antennas a basic small directional antennas. They may work in areas with strong/moderate signals but not where signals are weak. If you aren't sure which antenna would work best for the signals in your area I do offer custom antenna recommendations at the link below: www.antennamanpa.com/antenna-recommendations.html

      It the "electrical mast pole" how power gets into your house.
      If so, don't even think about putting the antenna there.
      Mount it at least 15 feet away. Setting aside the fact you might kill your self in the process, the wires look like a weird extra element to the antenna so they impact the reception and they also are carrying all manner of electrical noise.

      Bob Boitt Hi Bob Boitt.... I agree that modern antennas are mostly crappy but have to point out that using a rotor for your outdoor antenna is still common practice.
      I have a Hughe outdoor roof antenna with a rotor and signal boosters and we get roughly 40 channels in our fringe area. ( from 3 different directions) Without this combination we would get no channels at all.
      Digital tv pictures are fantastic... when ya get them. I wish we could still have the good ole reliable analog tv signal. Not perfect but there when you want it.

      TV antennas even 20 years ago were better than today. I've had to switch up and now I use a rotor on a UHF directional antenna. Combined, they do a pretty good job. Thankfully all the channels near me are UHF. And I agree with Tim, you can't beat a digital OTA signal, much better than cable or satellite.

    • @RickPaquin
      @RickPaquin 4 года назад +4

      Agree the older antennas were best. They were made in our own country where they employed engineers who knew what they were doing. Today, the chinese throw some cheap elements in a fancy plastic container, add an amp, and for those within 15 miles of a city, they think they are great. But they are really lousy and the cheap amp often causes more trouble than it's worth if you have other local signals overloading it. Unfortunately, people don't understand this and they sell!

    • @bradenswartz3849
      @bradenswartz3849 4 года назад +9

      If you don't like modern antennas, build your own. That's what I did until I got a small log-periodic antenna up about 30 feet on a pole. Now I get over 60 channels because I'm between two larger cities. My diy antennas all brought in 30-40 from indoors. My favorite was a plan for a fractal antenna I found online, with added vhf elements that I made. If you want something better, build your own horizontal log-periodic or yagi-uda antenna from a free plan online, or learn about antenna theory and design your own. Might take two days of research and a bit of math if you go that route. It will be cheaper, and likely work better than most of the stuff you'll find in stores. I'm moderately tired of people whining on the internet about how "back in my day..." when they now have easy access to all of humanity's knowledge at their fingertips. Look it up, build it, share your findings so other people can do the same. Might have to learn something new, but that's always a good thing. At a minimum, learning about antennas will help you find good ones and weed out shitty ones.

    Theoretically, a simple RF Trap, with a VHF Amp should 'glean' at least some usable signal, from what is likely an 'over-wound' UHF mid-range antenna coil.
    I've seen VHF omnidirectional antennas - in the VHF-Air range, which utilized two "V-shaped elements" (flat stock copper plated steel) joined - in positional opposition, with a small 'diamond' formed at their opposed center. Two flat stock elements, of approximate equal length - corresponding to the outer element width of the "V" sections, formed the other perimeters. Three 120° "Vees", for some reasoning, do not seem to work; which makes zero sense....

    The performance of any tv aerial (antenna) is governed by the height at which it is mounted, the altitude of the property it is located, local topography, the type of landscape the signal from the transmitter has to pass over before reaching your location, and also possible local electrical interference or co-channel interference from unwanted distant transmitters. Any general promise/guarantee regarding receiving distances of any aerial (antenna) are clearly worthless.

    I saw an antenna on ebay that claimed 900 mile range... HAHAHAHAHAHA! I also just went to the antennaweb.org site and put in my zipcode, says no stations were found... Thats not good. I live in Ohio 60 miles away from Cincinnati at the bottom of a valley surrounded by 400-500 foot hills. I love my remote location but man it sucks for anything radio or tv. The only internet I have is satellite However, I stuck an FM radio antenna up on my roof and manage to pick up a Cincinnati radio station clear as a can be as well as a station even further away in West Virginia, also clear as a bell. So that's what's got me thinking about TV. I'm hoping that if I can pick up FM radio that I might be able to at least pick up some VHF TV. I doubt I would pick up anything UHF though. So now I am on the hunt for a TV antenna I can put on the roof. Any antenna someone would recommend that would be best for VHF?

    This one worked better for us, because we can't change the direction of a directional antenna enough to do a good scan of our location vs towers. We'd had to have changed the direction to 3 points. Which is hard to do, when using directional antenna's. So for us, it was a win win.
    You should check out some of the claims on Wish.com antenna's. 9000 mile range? It's comical at best.
