    I use that Etchr art bag all the time. I LOVE IT !!! I toss it in my car trunk and it’s held up years. If it’s a cold or humid day and my watercolor takes too long to dry in wet areas I started using a portable heat gun from Ryobi. Harbor freight has some cheaper ones too. Great video and art. Wonderful as always.

    Nice work J. I wish that car wasn't there. The fire truck is more fun. Oh well. Those things happen.

      Dan Thomas haha that fire truck actually lit up and left halfway through the sketch so I’m kinda lucky i had the car to obscure it.. haha although as soon as I finished it came back and they opened all the bags so you could see all three and that looked much more interesting. It’s how it goes haha

    I'm so in love with your style. Your art looks so calm and peaceful just like your voice and this video. Idk why it warmed up my heart. You've got a new subcriber!

    Fantastic!! I love your thoughts on consolidating things and letting the viewer’s mind fill in the blanks. You make it look too easy. Ha ha! I like how you are using the paper high up on the slate and not using it in the middle. 🤔

      Brian Ashmore Studio thank you! I like having the space on the bottom to cling stuff or clamp stuff to. :) when it’s in the middle I feel like the space is wasted on the top.

    Beautiful sketch! And I love listening to other artists thoughts behind their techniques, I can relate to a lot of what you were saying about simplifying the scene and letting the eyes complete the picture, it’s something I’m struggling with because I am obsessed with details, but my ultimate goal is to develop this loose style too.

      K. Khrysty Fine Art thank you for watching! I used to paint very very detailed but it’s gotten more loose as I go. Appreciate your comment :)

    Beautiful painting as always. I can't wait to see your set up with your Etchr pad. I have one as well and have only used it without a tripod. I don't like how awkward it is to paint with it around my neck. But I got a tripod especially for it. Now, to find the time to take it out for plein air painting again....

      I need more experience with it over the shoulder to make a final judgement. I have really liked using it for short bursts but I could see how it could feel awkward on a longer session. :)

      Yea- I really really love carrying it around. I figured I'd always need a tripod but I actually really like the over the shoulder ability. It's a handy bag, for sure.

    Nice painting Jared! I'm really interested in seeing the subtle colors you mentioned (the green in the sky for instance) I find that my eye isn't as sensitive to color shifts like that, and I wish I could get more refined with it comes to color. I think I'm still learning how to delineate color and value still. It seems like it's a challenge every painting. Really nice one. My next video is about trying to catch the last of the fall colors too. It happened fast here!

      Danny Sabra can’t wait to see your video! Yea! I know what you mean. It’s like tiny switches in your mind that get turned on in time with practice. You’ll start to see it as you go.

    Hey Jared! I'm thinking of picking up the Etchr slate mini but I prefer to rest my palette on a surface because my arm and shoulder gets all cramped up if I hold it for too long. If I was using it with an A4 sketchbook, do you think there would be room for a small travel palette to rest underneath (with velcro to help it stick)? I'm torn between this one and the larger sized one! Thanks and I love your painting!

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  3 года назад +1

      Hi Josie! Both of them have pluses and minuses. I do find the min ith emost practical as the regular size is pretty cumbsersome. You'd need to lug a fairly heavy tripod to hold the larger model. It's heavy- the mini is much more comfortable to carry. I just tried and was able to slide an a4 size and small palette stacked- but you should know the interior of both is very tight. You could slide the sketch book in the outter pocket. I've been able to carry a palette and those in it comfortably.
      I'm actually thinking about selling or giving away my larger one- because it's so cumbersome I don't really use it. Although- the ability to wear as a double-strap back-pack is really cool.
      To be totally honest- I get the most use out of my lightweight metal travel easel that swivels around.
      If you're looking for one that you can throw open anywhere and set your things on the mini is the easiest.

      @@JaredCullum Thanks so much for your detailed reply! I think you've sold me on the smaller version, weight is a big factor for me especially since I'll be carrying a tripod too - and I'm mainly going to be using it for urban sketching meetups in the city where I don't need to bring every art supply I own, ever 😂

    I find cars to be so tricky whether up close or far away. Will watch the full length in Patreon later :D Would like to ask, when you're out for plein air, do you roam around and paint whatever catches your eye or do you plan ahead which spot you'll be painting? Did you use those cut-out frames to find good composition when you were first starting?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  5 лет назад +1

      Donna Makes Art hey! Sometimes. In this case I pass this station heading to the school I teach at so I had an idea of what I was interested in driving over.. I don’t but that’s a good method. I usually use the age old fingers in a box shape even though I feel silly. The fastest way I teach my students is to just use your smart phone. You can edit>crop and it will give you thirds and you can experiment with composition before committing to drawing it. You could also flip it to black and white if you need a little help deciphering value.
      Sometimes I just wing it all together which is a real roll of the dice. Haha

      @@JaredCullum thanks for the tip! I'm starting with painting from photo references. Specifically your shots haha. The principles of values and shapes are the same as painting portrait but it feels like my brain is having to relearn a new language so just trying to take it easy and do where I'm comfortable first :D

    Were those ultimo and prado brushes?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  5 лет назад +1

      Sri Teja B yes- exactly. :) I use ultimo for the first couple really large wet washes and then switch to prado. Sometimes perla.
