#dryden Pulled a Stamkos AS-18 in one of my two boxes. Is that really the rare case hit since it was unannounced?

Great Q. It's a matter of nomenclature or convention. E.g. is an insert RC a RC? Or, is a Canada Jrs RC a RC? Does Beckett get to decide what is and isn't a *true* RC? Or do we! Watch a case break of 20/21 Clear Cut. It's not always clear what is the case hit. If there is a Crosby or McD auto, everyone would reflexively say that's *the* case hit, or inner case hit. But is a Laffy Auto RC, if that same inner also has a Hasek Auto? And, there are other cards that only exist one per inner in the case, like the (retro) tribute RC, like a Barkov YG Acetate, which I might prefer. By definition, that too is a case hit statistically, if it is a super short print.
My *personal* belief is any card that is distributed one per case, inner, or less... is a literal case hit. An unannounced SSP would have to be every case or less. A card that is every 20 boxes is a case hit, just like an auto or redemption (both 5% odds, exactly one-per-case) is a case hit. So those are two guaranteed case hits in the same case. Which one of those is *the* case hit. Or is the unannounced card? And what if that case also has a 1/1 printing plate? According to the math, they are all rare (1-in-20 boxes), so case hits. But I'm sure someone will argue that they prefer an auto or a redemption, so my SSP isn't *the* case hit. To me, when ppl use articles like "the" instead of "a," they are being dogmatic about a hobby that benefits greatly from varying beliefs, perspectives, and tastes. Note too my SSP sold on eBay upon release for $30. The box cost $55. That's half the box value. That would be like hitting a $190 card in a $350 box of UD Premier.

@@Fultoncards I agree with most of what you state and question. I have always had the belief that a player's RC is their first base card as a professional in any given product by any given company. I have also heard the term "pre-rookie card" when referencing Canadian juniors i.e. Martin Brodeur's QMJHL card. I picked up a box of that for $10 and pulled two. I've been told that Beckett is no longer the standard, but where does one turn to find the value? eBay? Am I going to search every single card or buy a subscription to Beckett to log my collection? Please jog my memory of an insert being an RC. Has that really happened?
Thanks for pointing out how "dogmatic" my question was, as I should have used "the" instead. You are quite the wordsmith. As far as 20-21 Clear Cut, I've seen some breaks, not a case or an inner, but I'm inclined to think that a case hit could be subjective.
I'm going to have to use a thesaurus when commenting next time! #dryden

I pulled that pre-rookie QMJHL Marty on my channel four years ago. I don't think you're dogmatic. I just know social media has a vast spectrum of opinions ranging from literalists to conceptualists, from purists to pragmatists, and from compliant to revolutionary. I believe any card from a player's rookie year is a rookie card, even if it is an insert or lettered card. If a base parallel can be a RC so can some high tech non-base insert that blows away the base. Note that any auto - base or insert - from McDavid's rookie year sells for $1,000, as collectors obviously relate it to his first appearance in the hobby. It's his rookie year, so it's a RC, even if a cabal decreed otherwise in a published magazine. Who made Beckett god? We are not paying taxes for them to govern us. They are for-profit, and benefit from what they themselves decide. But ppl are classicist and ostentatious, and crave authorities. They like a caste system, whereby lettered subsets have lesser value than the purebred RC at the top of the checklist. To me, that's an antiquated feudal mentality. I say let one's individual excitement of hitting the card dictate whether we, ourselves, perceive it as a RC. Let eBay bids confirm the card's merit. Any 2020-21 Kaprizov has ppl bounding with joy. And ya, unfortunately, eBay is the largest card marketplace so it does set the book values. Beckett might list values, but they will be outdated compared to the most recent eBay Sold Items.

@@Fultoncards I think it just comes down to whether the card is desirable or not. RC or not, cards will sell to whoever really wants them. When I began collecting in 1990, there was no issue in knowing what a RC was and the value was based on whatever Beckett said. Maybe that plays into my mindset when wondering about values. Also, back then, hobby boxes were the only game in town and no inserts, autos or numbered cards. My seven Jagr 90-91 O-Pee-Chee Premiers have not budged in value since 1996, unless I were to get them graded. I've seen them as high as $15,000 GM-MNT 10 to $25 NM-MNT 8.
Going back to my original comment, I've read on a few different sites that MVP offers to "deliver an ample supply of short prints, parallels and inserts, as well as one 'rare hit card' that was not specified".

The weirdest part is new technology/release cards of legends go for far more than their original RCs, rooted mostly in numbering gimmickry and a new generation of collectors that chase the latest premium boxes at exorbitant prices due to group break multipliers. The next generation may have no need for this generation (of products) either. In fact, they may not even collect physical cards. Some form of gaming adrenaline chase or online ostentatious store of value could replace it. Like some quasi-blockchain technology in the sports domain.

Solid break! I think MVP could take the All star concept further and maybe have insert sets from the Allstar skill competition for example. #DRYDEN
